Discussing Israel/Gaza on right-wing talk radio

I had an unexpectedly substantive discussion of the Middle East and the "Islamic threat" on "The Hugh Hewitt Show" last night.

The letters thread is now closed.

I thought you did well in the interview, but he set the frame.

I was disappointed that the conversation was mired in the Israeli/Palestinian conflict through the lens of what Israel or Palestine should be doing.

Where was the greater, and more salient, point of, "Why is the U.S. involved in this as though the conflict was happening in Maryland?"

@Paul

Thanks.

When Zionism was first posited as an idea, and as Zionists got to work, the great majority of Jews, who were, unlike the Zionists, cognizant of their own religion, were anti-Zionists.

I, as a Jew, am content to wait until God decides, in His place and His way, to restore the nation of Israel. Any violence and oppression of others by Jews can only delay that day.

Zionist read the Scriptures backwards. They start with the diaspora, and end up in the Garden of Eden! Sorry fellas, the story goes the other way!

At last count, God has decided that a Jewish Nation is not a good idea. Perhaps He thinks Jews need lessons in getting along with others, I certainly don't know.

But I would very much like to hear how Zionism fits into any conception of religious Judaism. In fact, Jews are pledged, by the three Oaths, not to engage in Zionism.

Winsmith, if our God endorses the Zionist project, and wishes Jews to kill and dispossess others in their quest for a state, why shouldn't the rest of mankind hate us and see us as enemies. Hell, we could decide next that Zionism demands a state in the US just for Jews!

Israel, a state for Jews, based on English and French colonialism, it's location delineated by 19th century British Public-school Biblical geography!

Yeah, count me in! (not)

A Welt Online arcticle on the Jabalia UN School Massacre

Arutz Sheva in Israel points out that after the IDF shelled a school in Lebanon back in 2006, a cease fire was essentially forced on poor hapless Israel.

The level of propaganda is stunning.

Voice of Israel government radio said that eyewitnesses saw Hamas terrorists pull little children by their ears to use them as shields. Virtually none of the media reports noted the exploitation of children.

Derbig Hankest

The French controlled Lebanon and Syria, they controlled no part of historical Palestine.

However, Hankest: Please don't go there. Don't we have enough with the Israelis and Palestinians, we have to bring the Anglo Saxons in too?

Glen, you are so full of your lawyerly self, you'd think it would be nice if you could legislate porta potties inside the box cars.

You live in a world of your own making, not in the world as it is. You could not even admit that Neville Chamberlain's approach to Hitler's looming threat was wrong. You lost the debate you are so typically smug about.

Since you are hanging out here, maybe you could explain why, after years and years of protests and objections, Palestinian children are still taught in their schools to hate Jews, that Jews are really not their fellow human beings.

You have a great deal of chutzpah, Mister Twit, to say that Jews who still live in the real world and not in your fantasy land, should just trust their fate to the kindness and humanity of others. You say that they should not fight back. You say they should ignore the facts on the ground that generations of young Arabs are still being taught to hate them and how to murder them.

You have not responded to the very obvious bias you hold against any form of Israeli self defense. You are biased. Anyone who can read and see and hear will notice that you are biased.

One of my best friends died two years ago at the age of 74, and for 60 years of her life, she woke up each night in a sweat, her legs churning, running after her baby brother in the same dream, her baby brother who was ripped from her arms as her boxcar arrived at Auschwitz.

In your typically smug arrogance, you ignore history and human nature, just because you are in love with your own mind, a mind that dreams up a fantasy world in which human beings need not defend themselves against evil.

You really seem to hate your own people who do not fall into line with your dangerous willingness to trust in the inherent kindness of strangers you will never know. The lessons of Danny Pearl are lost on fools like you, Glen. What is it you dislike so much about your Jewish brothers and sisters? I held some sick prejudices against my own until I was lucky enough to take a class from the now renowned Rabbi, Jacob Milgrom, about about 40 years ago. You are young and yet you seem to believe that you know everything. As my favorite TV personality, Jim Cramer often says, you "KNOW NOTHING!"

And, bye the way, I am a veteran of battle and would gladly fight again. Some things are worth fighting for and even dying for. I am grateful to both my father and my step father for not shirking their responsibility to save our lives and to defend this land in the 1940's.

We were very lucky to be born with a human body and a human mind. We can use it to understand the nature of good and evil or we can use it to rationalize all kinds of human foolishness and folly.

Enjoyable

--it is to see how analysis of factions warring over ancient Gaza's, gods and guns distill down into the psychology of why we choose to fight or to negotiate instead.

It's not a mistake to conclude that a pervasive element masculine gender-based aggression is continually glorified at the expense of "strangely feminine" caution or patience.

Who are the exalted presidents and kings of history--those inclined to analyze all sides/arguments, dispassionate of fear tactics to purpose their assaults or--the blustery, leaders who charge ahead full steam with corporate profits as their engine?

The heroes of Israel, Gaza, Afghanistan and Iraq ask for equality and peace, but not as the war hawks define it.

Watch the MSM schnooze-and-loose-your-views apologists for give-America-the-benefit of the doubt foray into war-is- necessary apologetics because Israel is special and nations don't like them and they suffer for being Jews.

For every one Jew killed count the non-Jew. Is this what special means?
