Orwell, blinding tribalism, selective Terrorism, and Israel/Gaza

Extreme emotional and cultural identification with one side leads people to believe that X is good when done by them and evil when done to them.

Because I'm not a reflexive follower.

You should repeat that to yourself over and over while going back over your comments on here from the past couple of days.

O.M.G.

I'm many pages back, having gone out with my beloved spouse for a pizza. Coming back into this mix on page 49/50, I am rolling on the floor laughing.

My dear The Satanic Jews of Hollywood, Are you working for Lyndon LaRouche? -something stinks

(actually, I tend to believe he is nothing but a roomful of baboons frantically thumping away at keyboards, the result being fed into some kind of word processing unit) -totallyblase

Let's see, next line "And for that he gets the big bucks! Here he is, tanned and fit and ready, Ladies and Gentlemen, here he is, GLENN GREENWALD!!!" -Derbig Mooser

It is a cop looking where the thing hit a street and did not even leave a pot hole! -heru-ur

I'm half Egyptian and half Libyan...so what what does that make me...Cryto-Egypto-Mephisto-dipped in Crisco? -Klytus

Satan of Hollywood's reward for littering this blog with his racist Nazi-like rubbish must be seven israeli virgin female soldiers just out of boot-camp, sponsored by AIPAC. -EatingRaul

Congratulations WinSmith, Zenwick, and others, you've reduced your entire array of arguments to a colossal joke. Tell me. Does it get funnier from here? I'm not sure my intercostal muscles can take it. Maybe I should simply stop where I am before I break a rib.

Nice work, Glenn!

OK, so I don't have time to read all 532 letters posted to date - and, I suspect, neither do you, Mr. Greenwald. Nevertheless, I want to say two things to you:

1) It's very refreshing to hear a common-sense point of view on the conflict, which is all too uncommon in the American media. Thank you.

2) Defenders of the Israeli attack are (of course) unswayed by your arguments. Israel has to defend itself, they say. No further discussion needed. They accuse you of wanting to "sing kumbaya" and everything will be fine.

But you aren't that naive. I'd be interested in knowing what concrete steps you think should be taken (by Israel, by Obama, by the Palestinians) to resolve this seemingly never-ending conflict with a lasting peace.

round and round we go, where it stops, nobody knows!

and we are, back to the old, "look how much money we give to Egypt!" distraction.

What if someone favors pulling the welfare checks out from under all the tin pot dictators and "democracies" we support? What if someone favors closing our 700+ bases in 130+ countries around the world?

I'm not saying that Glenn is in favor of doing that, but I am, so what say you? What then? Where do the apologists go from there?

@Whinesmith

You are a self-pitying putz, but that's not what we are talking about. I ask you again You put many words and phrases in Quote marks and say or imply they are quotes from Glenn Greenwald. CAN YOU SUNSTANTIATE THEM. Where and when did Glenn say them?

Why should I do anything but make fun of someone who makes up quotes? You just dream up what Glenn says, put it in quote marks, and it's true? Do you think you are fooling anybody.

ONCE AGAIN, Whinesmith: You put many words and phrases in quote marks, and either say or imply that Glenn Greenwald said them, and in the context you posit. Will you substantiate them, or will you admit that you are a liar.

Oh, BTW, Whinesmith, just because you believe something doesn't make it true. I know that violates several basic tenets of Zionism, but that's just the way it is, boychik! And yes, I can defend that statement.

zenwick

When a poster like omooex feels the need to inform me each time I say anything with which he disagrees that he would like to knock my teeth out, it diminishes the value of what we are doing here.

You're one of those bizarre yet all-too-common species of commenters who madly alternates between (a) spitting the most extreme and reckless accusations you can think of against anyone who disagrees with you and (b) adopting the effete vocabulary of a Victorian manners maven to protest the terribly upsetting and uncouth masses whenever people do it to you.

How do you keep track of which role you're in at any given moment?

@Zenwick

When a poster like omooex feels the need to inform me each time I say anything with which he disagrees that he would like to knock my teeth out,

Quote? Cite? In which comment did Omooex threaten you with violence? Please substantiate! That is a disgraceful thing to lie about.

@ Chris Sinnard

You're worse than a reflexive follower. You're a reflexive follower who thinks he thinks for himself. At least the dittoheads on the right acknowledge they sit around and nod to Rush.

You should challenge everything Glenn, or anyone else, writes. I'm sure Glenn would agree with me on this. Glenn's biases are cherrypicking are pretty obvious, and there are numerous other sources that can explain to you what Hamas stands for and what they have put the people of Israel through.

Again, what would you have Israel do to stop the mortar fire? Ask more nicely?

The Palestinians voted violent terrorists into office. They are digging underground mazes to funnel more mortar fires into civilian neighborhoods.

What should Israel do? You think for yourself, so you claim. You tell me.

Israel is responding, as they did in 2003, to a direct attack from terrorists. Understanding this is not "pro-war."

I oppose any war on Iran. I oppose Bush's entire doctrine of pre-emptive war.

I will never oppose the right of a civilization to respond to mortar fire. I will, however, support you in critiquing Israel when they respond indiscriminately, and I hope journalists will be let into Gaza soon so the world can make an honest determination (and not rely on Glenn Greenwald's YouTube links).

@Glenn

I don't really believe in having rules per se. I generally think adults are best left to their own devices to decide with whom they want to engage and what rules of engagement they create with one another.... I think that's what makes the quality of discussion here good -- that people don't have to think about whether they're violating rules in how they express themselves.

I disagree with you, but hey - it's your show. All I can say is: etiquette exists for a reason. Read Miss Manners sometime.
