Orwell, blinding tribalism, selective Terrorism, and Israel/Gaza

Methinks They Doth Protest Too Much!

They claim to have departed, but Announcing One's Departure Only to Suddenly Reappear Triumphantly-- aha!-- is another indispensable tool in the Troll Toolkit.

Be that as it may-- I strongly suspect that beneath their fulminating tirade of anti-Glenn invective, SJH are first in line, and quivering with anticipation, when Glenn administers his Brazilian whacks.

damn blockquotes...

and FYI to anyone who uses the blockquote tag...

If you put it on its own line it won't do that weird thing where it removes blank lines between the first two paragraphs, like this:

Headline of some article

Article text

when you want this:

Headline of some article

Article text

So do your blockquotes like this (with the tag getting its own line):

< blockquote >

blah blah blah

< /blockquote >

And not like this:

< blockquote >blah blah blah

< /blockquote >

Unless you are quoting GBT, then its:

< blackquote >

I speak for all true black people! Kill whitey!

< /blackquote >

@little brother

Are you kidding? I know the end of that story! While the Palestinbian houseboy is kneading my lumpy tochas he's all the time making eyes at my wife. (And can I blame him? She's a real balboosta!)

Before I know it, her and the houseboy take off with my credit cards and the next thing I know she finds out being the other wife is a lot better than worrying about the other woman.

I need such complications? I'll stay here by Putrid Sound. The weather stinks but I don't have to worry about my wife's absconding with some guy who turns out to be Rudy Vallee. Y'know?

@ Glenn's original thesis

I do think it's worth noting in light of the media coverage of the past few days, that Glenn Greenwald's original thesis from January 2nd has now been proven to be total poppycock.

Glenn wrote about the "debate" on Israel/Gaza. Those quotes around "debate" are Glenn's quotes. Glenn feels there is no real debate, either in Washington or in our corporate media.

Glenn's critique of the lack of debate over Gaza was then published in a national newspaper. Glenn then cited a congresswoman who spoke pretty definitively against the bombing (with no reprisal to date).

Glenn then repeatedly implies that democrats think like he does -- the bombing was unjustified -- but refuse to say so. What their motives for lying are remain unspoken. Perhaps AIPAC funding is behind their lies. Perhaps alien mind control.

All we know is Glenn believes that democrats are not telling the truth when they state support for Israel, as seen here:

Much more notable is the fact that Democratic Party leaders -- including Harry Reid and Nancy Pelosi -- are just as lockstep in their blind, uncritical support for the Israeli attack, in their absolute refusal to utter a word of criticism of, or even reservations about, Israeli actions.

Refusal to do something. And again, when Edwards spoke out:

That's much further than most national Democrats have been willing to go.

Never considered by Glenn: That democrats actually support Israel on the merits. They are not "willing to go" to a place that Glenn believes is fact. To Glenn, this is black and white. For democrats not to speak out about Israel is to be "unwilling" to do something. Reasons for this unwillingness? Left untheorized, but not for his readers (secret Jewish funding from rich bankers buying off our politicians is a popular one).

As a good lawyer, Glenn's framed a classic "When did you stop beating your wife?" proposition. It is impossible to answer him without confirming the premise: that politicians and our media are unable to criticize Israel.

And of course the last three days has seen CNN, MSNBC, Fox and numerous papers do exactly that. Today's New York Times writes about the invasion as a potentially disastrous mistake. Criticizing Israel is not only not anathema to our media and politicians, it's happening right before our eyes.

But in Glenn's conspiracy theory mind, criticizing Israel is verboten.

We shall see.

Glenn also argues that the United States is using "all of its resources" to defend Israel:

It's one thing to argue that Israel is being both wise and just by bombing the densely populated Gaza Strip. It's another thing entirely to argue that the U.S. should use all of its resources to support Israel as it does so.

People arguing America should use "all of its resources" to help Israel? Zero.

Total American casualties in Israel fighting for the Israelis: Zero.

Glenn is right on one point, lets debate the 3 billion a year we give to Israel. Lets debate the 2 billion a year we give to Egypt and the 1 billion to Pakistan. I'm sure Glenn is even more outraged that we're funding the latter two.

Oh wait...

perceptions

BTW Obama views Jesus as a Black Jew..

-- GBT

And I view you as a black racist. Amazing the way perceptions work.

Indeed, Pedinska

I am often surprised at how easily people are led to enthusiastically condone mass slaughter, as long as the claimed intention is not murder. I suppose if Hamas claimed tomorrow that their real target was the buildings and infrastructure of Sderot, they'd get a pass too.

Your voice is is so clear and rare in the sanity of it's perspective. Thanks Glenn

Keep posting because it's so difficult to find anyone willing to speak truth to such rabble like Goldfarb. He's a rabble rouser whose chubby fingers were never meant for writing but for patting the fat of his paymasters. He is a cultivator of ignorance. By his own logic one would be justified in killing his whole family at a Thanksgiving dinner just to kill him and send a message to other war monger journalists that cowards who write should not write about justifying killing innocent civilians to 'make a point' less they become 'the point' they are trying to make.

The rationalized insanity of those born of privilege who write never go against the opinions of the privilege that runs them. That the Israelis did not care about the deaths of innocents, especially children, in order to get their targets justified any acts that might be done to them in the future. To claim they are "more rational" from such decisions is like claiming it's just good sport to shoot deer with machine guns from helicopters.

If the same energy and money were put toward finding solutions for a lasting peace we would no longer have these deadly actions occurring with such regularity. When people belonging to the group acting in such a manner condemn it as much as those it happens to then peace will win out.

Weapons industries make billions from these conflicts so of course there are those who will instigate conflict just to keep the money rolling in. Where did the 2000lb buster bomb come from

Also there are scum in any fighting organization. Like the Indians who were slaughtered by US soldiers for sport because they were "savages" did horrendous things to them while others protected them all the way to reservations like Gaza Indian reservation.

Of all peoples, one would think after the horrors the Jews went through under Nazi rule, it would make them sensitive toward human suffering or treating others like sub-humans and make sparing human life precious to the point that they would exhaust all other options before killing others. Looks like Israel got the same type of government leaders the US had appointed for the "Iraq war years". Wonder if they are making as much money for cronies as the Bush crime family did.

I diverse, but thanks again Glenn. It's hard to find a voice of such good caliber reporting on these events.
