The fact is that Christians have been slaughtering, displacing, and persecuting Jews as a matter of course since right around the year 0, all the way up to modern times. Hitler didn't invent Jew-hatred, he merely tapped into it.

The Israelis did not attack just because of the incoming rocket athough there certainly was the provocation. Nor did they attack because the incoming rockets were far more lethal and went far further than previously, indicating a build up of bigger and more sophisticated weapon, although that was certainly a provocation. There is also the issue of all the maze of tunnels with which high grade weapons were being smuggled in by outside sources. So the question for Israel is what is to be done with a group of people funded by other countries looking to destabilize the area -- who absolutely do not believe in Israel's right to exist?

That video/song do bring back memories. It was my anthem for a good bit when a young lass. And I cried in solidarity w/ Bobby Sands et al. when they died by going on hunger strikes.

But the situation had caused bloodshed for centuries, and it was long past time for both sides to realize everyone was there to stay, and so they had to work it out. Maturing as an adult I came to accept that. Ditto for the I/P bloody stalemate.

Doesn't mean I was not still outraged at every reported atrocity committed by Her Majesty's troops, but there just were no clean hands in the entire mess. The options were: 1. Continued death and carnage for all, or 2. Come to some negotiated peace.

I admire you much of what you write but I have to say that this is one topic that seems to not end well for anyone who seem brave enough to stick their neck out. There are very few sources that speak with any degree of impartiality ... particularly in the US media. shameful plug : I would recommend robert fisk at the independent (UK).

There are many accounts of how influential AIPAC is in this country and it seems the new president is no different to previous occupants in this regard. It would have been nice if the 'change we can believe in' included this sordid little corner of the american political 'process'.

Who knows whether Obama is brave enough?

I keep on telling myself that at least, Obama is sensible enough to not make any disturbing noises on a lot of things until he is as safely ensconced behind a fathful White House security as it is possible to be. We need a President, and not a martyr.

But I don't think the timing or method of this Israeli action is going to win them any friends at the Obama White House. I could be wrong, I don't know.

But if they launched the attack now because they thought it would be impossible once Obam is in office, I hope he proves them right.

It may be 1.4 billion muslims against just 6 million Jews, but the 6 million includes a God who can eliminate the 1.4 billion in a split second if he chooses to do so.
