Nepotistic succession in the political class A large, and rapidly growing, percentage of high elected officials are part of politically powerful families. What accounts for this anti-democratic dynamic?

  • Considering the issues Glenn attacks

anyone who reads Glenn's writings on here knows Glenn is anything BUT a coward.

Had the letter writer been more diplomatic, his point might have come across more productively rather than being taken down for its rudeness.

  • Disney

Not supported by any facts, but I do have this recollection that many Disney films have single father families.... I always wondered about that.

  • So fix it.

Nepotism is why I initially opposed both George W. Bush and Hillary Rodham Clinton. In Bush's case I found plenty more later but the initial reason is that I don't believe in an American Aristocracy.

So the fix is simple, oppose ANY scion, wife or other family member of a previous or sitting politician on principle until they give you a real reason to support them. All it takes is just a little bit of public awareness and a healthy brand skepticism.

"Free your mind. Your ass will follow".

  • Copy of response I wrote to liberal blogger on SwingState.com who favors nepotism

When there is a fix it is definitely NOT the voters' decision. Not when decisions by political power brokers are made AFTER the primary. Some examples:

    1. Congressmen William Lipinski (Illinois) took his name off the ballot months after winning the primary and power brokers put his son Dan's name on the ballot. It's a Democratic district and NO DEMOCRAT EVER could challenge Dan, a professor in Nashville, in a primary.

    2. Cook County CEO John Stroger (Illinois) took his name off the ballot months after winning the primary and power brokers put his son Todd's name on the ballot. It's a Democratic county and NO DEMOCRAT ever could challenge Todd.

    3. State Senate president Emil Jones (Illinois) took his name off the ballot months after winning the primary and power brokers put his son's name on the ballot. It's a Democratic district so NO DEMOCRAT ever could challenge the son.

  • @Sysprog

    Yglesias:

"It would have surprised me — a lot — if two years ago you’d told me that conservatives would be hailing Hillary Clinton’s appointment as Secretary of State as a great ideological victory for the American right."

Much of my holiday purchasing activity will be Overton Windowshopping this season.

    It's a good thing! - Martha Stewart

Things are indeed shifting...back to normal!

  • Princess Warriors

As pedinska can (attempt if she will) to explain, there is no such thing as a "public service gene".

    If we were purely a product of our DNA, then I would be a successful business person instead of a researcher. Unfortunately for me, in my family if it had been genetic, then it would have been a sex-linked trait. Not being in possession of the required penis, I was relegated to following my own more service-oriented profession while my brother took advantage of the paterfamilial pursuit. ;-}

The princess-industrial toy industry screws girls. That's what its there for, IMHO.

I was never much of a fan of dolls myself and have always given toys to my nieces that encouraged artistic expression and or self-sufficiency. They will also be following in my footsteps in martial arts as well if I have any say.

  • @umbrage

    I often ponder

    That same exact fact

    That 'ol uncle Walt

    Was really whack

  • The wrong Casey won

Although I don't remember the specifics because it was nearly 30 years ago when I was a college student in Pennsylvania, there was an election in which three Caseys ran for office -- two prominent Caseys and a teacher named Casey.

My recollection is that the famous Caseys lost and the unknown Bob Casey won the nomination for lieutenant governor of Pennsylvania. My recollection is that he ran for office as a joke to satirize political nepotism and won.

  • This is the way they do things in India,

Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Egypt, Syria, Argentina, any number of other countries, as well as all the former monarchies - and all of these countries have proven to history that family ties do not at all guarantee competence, perhaps just the opposite, as we've learned to our chagrin - and "chagrin" cannot begin to describe the destructiveness of and our reactions to the murderous, corrupt and incompetent Bush regime. GW simply could not have been even considered for president had he not been the son of a president, no matter how mediocre.

But too many voters somehow love to place their faith in the son, daughter, wife, cousin, nephew, or even husband of a ruler or legislator. I think part of the logic (to abuse the word shamelessly) is "S/he may be a fool, but s/he's OUR fool!"

It makes no sense - but then of course that's why they do it.

  • Oh!, Pedinska

If you need another digit to succeed, let me know and I'll loan you mine. It's damned sure not doing anything for me right now.

I'll let you know when I need it back.

    Love,

  • Don't Get Me Started on Nepotism

Illinois is one of the worst offenders in this regard.

    Daley

    Madigan

    Stroger

    Lipinski

    Jackson

    Jones (Emil)

Kennedy (yes they are HERE too)

    Hynes

    I'm sure there are others.

  • We've got a winner for today folks . . .

clearly GGIAC is in the running for dickhead of the year as well. "I've worked in local politics and this is business as usual move along" is precisely what is wrong with the situation but of course your supercrapspactacular abilities as a local politician have nothing to do with the current fucked up state of political affairs in America. Right? Everything is gravy and all the legacies are doing yoeman's work at all levels of local, state, and federal government. All work exactly the same and have the same national implications. Right? C'mon GGIAC why don't you divulge your mysterious accomplishments in politics so we can have a look see at the glorious work you and your colleagues are doing. You want to have your good old boys screwed up backwater system in whatever backwater community you live in, have at it. But this here, until recently, was a real powerful nation capable of exercising the collective will in some very unpalatable amoral ways and one only has to be intellectually honest to understand "part of the why" is the insular thinking that is bred of nepotism. That you don't understand that simply makes you a moron and probably one of the enlightened 46%.

    Piss off douche.
