The ongoing disgrace of NBC News and Brian Williams Another story from the NYT further exposes the corruption of NBC's reliance on Gen. Barry McCaffrey as an "independent military analyst."

  • @ omooex

I'm no expert and though GE does provide military products--but not weapons-...

Actually, it did (and maybe does still) work producing nuclear weapons. Click sig for links.

And I'd be veeerrryyyy surprised if it didn't have contracts for production of parts of various other weapons (electronics, fuses, control systems, and such).

    Cheers,

[quoting the Instastoopid]: "And now keeping Bush’s Defense Secretary on."

I'm currently reading Tim Weiner's "Legacy of Ashes" expose of CIA foibles over the years, and Robert Gates is in there. I really don't think it's a good idea keeping Gates on as Secretary of "Defense" (as we so euphemistically put it nowadays). The sooner he goes, the better, I'd say, and hell with "bipartisanship" and token Republican-appointed hangers-on....

    Cheers,

  • I wonder......

If Keith Olberman would pick up on this. NBC is his boss so probably not. Too bad. He could rip pretty boy Williams a new one.

  • Commercial News

He's only there to sell lightbulbs.

I attended a talk given by Brian Williams just before he became the news anchor. He was asked his opinion about bloggers - I can't remember the exact question.

At any rate, his answer was totally dismissive. He proudly stated that his stories went through 'five filters' before they were broadcast, which meant the stories were more accurate and credible due to these internal reviews.

He didn't provide further detail, but I can only imagine: 1) Will this story reflect negatively/positively upon GE? 2) How will this story affect the Nielson ratings? 3) Will it offend any of our sponsors? 4)Will we be accused of bias from other media outlets? 5) Does it unsettle anyone, making viewers less receptive to the next commercial?

I think another word for 'filters' is 'censors'.

  • The "Free Press" In America Is Pretty Much Gone

Since big corporations like General Electric, Disney, and Time-Warner, all of which are invested in businesses unrelated to their original function, have been allowed to take control of most mass marketing media outlets, what we have now is a propaganda machine for the globalist corporate oligarchy. Hasn't anyone else noticed how in the recent political campaigns the "mainstream media" moved as if by a hidden conductor to promote and celebrate certain candidates and ignore, sneer at, and mock others? Did not anyone else notice how the media would blow hot on a candidate together for a few weeks, then denigrate him (or her)? Did you notice how Hillary Clinton's campaign was declared hopeless before some of her biggest wins and how the unrelenting drumbeat of negativism became a self-fulfilling prophecy? So much for "objective reporting". We live in a nation where we are not only told what to buy, but which candidates for political office are acceptable and which national policies are "prudent". By no coincidence, the candidates and policies that benefit the corporate culture the most are portrayed as "centerist" and "moderate". Those who have the perspicacity to declare that this culture is ethically, financially, and ecologically bankrupt are marginalized and declared to be fringe elements. So much for the "free press".

  • enfranchised experts!, I'm shocked, Shocked!

Glen, you should look at the run up of oil prices. The only people the media brought on were oil traders, T. Boone Pickens and others who made their money on oil. Go, ask a Realtor if it's a good time to buy a house, It's ALWAYS a fine time to buy.

Our oil supplies were running a million barrels a week surplus over the last three years--with the exceptions of about 5 weeks--two for Katrina and three for Ike. That is excess supply in both crude and refined gas. Yet, all we heard or saw on TV is how oil was short. Check with Ed Wallace's site 3w.insideautomotive.com Ed is an award winning journalist, columnist for Business Week, hosts a 5hr. weekly radio show. He tracks oil, industry, international trade, cars, the auto industry and American politics, doesn't vote out of principle and is an earnest voice of reason.

I agree with your calls for more transparency and disclosure in journalism. Let's not limit this to just the Defense industry. There's nothing wrong with their perspective, we just deserve a true dialogue from the array of legitimate arguments.

  • Lest we forget,

    Operation Mockingbird.

The goal is Propaganda, not a free press. Glenn, your exposes are great at showing the emperor's they have no clothes, and the masses are starting to call them on it. Terrific stuff!

  • How much of a financial stake

does Brian Williams have in the war?

  • Thank you, Kitt

When Barstow wins a Pulitzer next April for his series on the TV generals, will television news still boycott the story?

  • Phony Baloney

Brian Williams is as phony as they come: this guy is pulling down millions and shops at Target! He is patently insincere; and his use of Barry McCaffrey is no surprise. The last thing NBC can afford is to be a real news organisation. Guys like Welch, the former chairman oif GE set the tone and its been downhill ever since. NBC is the propaganda arm of GE. All the other arms are in the Pentagon contracts pot.

  • Tina Brown's suggestion to "terrified" Steve Capus and to other "terrified" NBC Universal executives

    Washington's Other Transition
    by Tina Brown

How is it Obama can fill a Cabinet faster than NBC can replace Tim Russert?

The suits at NBC are doing far more agonizing over who should fill Tim Russert’s shoes on Meet the Press than Obama is over appointing his cabinet. They're taking more time over it, too. I guess that’s because the president-elect has something the NBC front office doesn’t have: self-confidence. Unlike him, they’re so terrified of making a mistake they can't make a decision. [...]

Russert himself was not a journalist. He came from politics. His interviews either promoted his subjects or subjected them to opposition research. He was the Washington élite’s staff man, stoking their prejudices, whims, and attitudes. His regular-guy persona flattered the élite by making them imagine they were regular guys too. [...]

NBC seems to be paralyzed by the sense that whomever they chose has to be another Russert. Not so. Russert defined an era, but that era is over. [...]

I say give Meet the Press to Rachel Maddow. She’s smart. She’s quick. She’s witty. She does her homework. And she listens to what the person she’s talking to is saying. She doesn't just go to the next question on her list. [...]
