The ongoing disgrace of NBC News and Brian Williams Another story from the NYT further exposes the corruption of NBC's reliance on Gen. Barry McCaffrey as an "independent military analyst."
The letters thread is now closed.
  • The Public Good

It might be a good idea to pressure the Obama administration to threaten to start pulling liscences if the media refuses to address their many failings of the last few years

  • If this in-depth NYT story doesn't do it what will?

Thanks for continuing to push this outrage. McCaffrey was brought out to talk first about Mumbai. What the hell kind of expert is he on that story even with all his compromised ethics?

It makes it much more difficult for Williams and his NBC bosses to recognize corporate influence and the damage the congressional-M$M-military-industrial complex does to our nation and the world when they are so mired in the same corruption. Once again hypocrisy continues to reign unabated in a profession that is supposed to provide checks and balances to uncover just this kind of insidious influence.

  • He sees their tape recorder

    And he grabs it

"No you can't have it back silly rabbit!"

  • Glenn, Glenn...

Why so outraged? Newsflash: NBC is owned by General Electric, which did almost $9 Billion in U.S. Government defense contracts between 2000 and 2007 (source: GovernmentContractsWon.com). Does anyone think G.E. bought a television network so execs could get good seats at the Emmy Awards?

  • Of course, the nbc network itself is the most pernicious

NBC, being owned by general electric, maker of all sorts of death-hardware, is guilty of this behavior to the core. hare clear FCC stipulations to broadcast 'in the public interest'. Their statement to the NYT, and their ongoing deceit throughout the last 8 years shows clear contempt for the 'public interest'. It took the radical-right 30 years to get Dan Rather, it's time to go after nbc, imo.

I'm aware of that, and have noted it. The difference is substantial: that NBC is owned by GE is public information. That NBC's military analysts have financial stakes in the policies they're advocating is not.

Everyone is free to assess the credibility of reporting where conflicts are publicly known. The problem with undisclosed conflicts it that, by definition, they can't be assessed.

  • War Pigs

As bad as this situation is - and it is bad when war profiteering propagandists are presented as independent analysts - my suspicion is that it pales in comparison to the profiteering that's been carried out, and is being carried out today, by the war pigs in The House of Representatives, The Senate, The Administration (outgoing and incoming) and The Federal Judiciary.

I'd like to know just how much wealth our political overlords have generated for themselves and each other by creating, implementing and upholding the horrific policies which, by design, result in the death, carnage and displacement of millions of human beings, including more than a few Americans.

Something tells me an answer will not be forthcoming.

  • Disgrace is yours!

If you are getting your news from ABC, NBC, CBS, CNN, FOX, BBC or aljazeera, it's 2008 why would anyone be limited or even consider any of them for impartial anything.

    VIVA AMY.

  • A very important, and unfortunately ongoing theme

My thanks to Glenn for his repeated emphasis on this topic.

The co-incidence of major news producer and major military and defense / industrial contractor interests has been an awful, awful tendency for this nation since at least the Reagan administration.

Before that, sure, the major news corporations identified strongly with their military / defense corporate class colleagues through sheer class solidarity and standard hawkish predilection, but the direct inter-weaving of their interests (anyone remember the utterly false hyping of the "Patriot" missile, to boost its production and sales in Gulf War 1?) has lowered a previously low standard into the cellar.

  • How Brian William's Blog is an excellent example of 'gaming the system'

Here's the disclaimer which appears right above the comment form. Well designed to prevent any critical commentary from getting through:

  • The Shiny Humvee House of Cards is essentially Incompetent and Doomed

I bought a GE cordless phone a few months ago and it is worthless: the range is only a few feet, sound quality is poor, calls are dropped, etc. This is the result, IMHO, of GE's reliance on corrupt government contracts (war and power plants) as its main source of income, requiring currying the junta's favor with servile propaganda, but not requiring quality customer service to any other customer. Consider also GM, Ford, Chrysler, and any and all corporate-industrial parasites, and the "quality" of their products.

These corrupt entities serve evil. The people who work for them serve evil. They bind our planet, our Mother, in destruction and death, salting the earth with radioactive bullets, using and abusing and torturing Her like the sociopaths they are.

I fear the Doom of them will also be the Doom of humanity. But life will go on, without us. She is fertile beyond our imagining.

  • A Free Press, Compromised

A free press is compromised when owned by a commercial interest such as General Electric.

Although the disclosure of potential conflicting interests may be present, the average news consumer may be overwhelmed by the amount of research needed to ascertain to what extent the conflict has on the accuracy of the reporting.

To this end, Glenn is providing an invaluable service.

The question remains, however, as to the ultimate result of this conflict. The issue presented in Glenn's report is but one of many and we'll never know the full extent of the problem as it relates to other issues and times.

The corporate ownership of news media is full of potential dangers to a free and informed press and this, in turn, affects the future of a free country.

  • Where is Rachel Maddow When You Need Her?

I wonder if she will air a story about this? I'd love to see Barstow/the Nation/Columbia Journalism Review or others debate Brian Williams about this.

Also, the most amusing falsehood in this story, which Glenn hinted at but didn't even feel the need to point out: they first openly deny the need for any vetting, then later claim they do it? Spare me something written by your PR hack; let's talk to someone with real authority.
