Another column all Americans need to read

Great work, as usual, Glenn.

You do need to change one typo near the end of this item -- "upraided" obviously is supposed to be "upbraided".

I Shall Smite Thee Down With Righteous Vengeance and Furious....

When I saw that the AG had lost it and collapsed while making a speech in defence of the Bush torture regime today, my first thought was that God Almighty was surely teaching these fools a lesson.

But then he got better, so maybe it was just a warning. Who knows? Only Baby Jeebus and the Angels.

Either way, it won't matter. These evil criminals are beyond help.

Did you see Bush getting ignored by all the G20 leaders? That was after he had to ask the Australian PM what the G20 even was! IMHO pressure is taking it's toll. Reality is a b*tch sometimes.

Sweet Jesus!

American hypocrisy knows no bounds at all.

Imagine those other "totally bad people" holding a man without evidence of wrongdoing! Just imagine.

Now just try to imagine Americans doing it --- oh, wait. Never mind.

Anthrax Revisited

Glenn,

Did you see the latest anthrax-related developments?

U.S. Loses Ruling on Hatfill

A federal judge ordered the Justice Department yesterday to release documents that explain why investigators suspected Steven J. Hatfill in the 2001 anthrax mailings. Hatfill has since been exonerated.

U.S. District Judge Royce C. Lamberth ordered the Justice Department to make public affidavits and related records used to persuade judges to allow federal agents to search Hatfill's property. He also ruled that the government must disclose similar records involving Hatfill's girlfriend.

In ruling for the New York Times and the Los Angeles Times, which were seeking the documents in a lawsuit, Lamberth wrote that the public has "a legitimate interest in observing and understanding how and why the investigation progressed in the way that it did."

In 2002, Attorney General John D. Ashcroft named Hatfill as a "person of interest" in the anthrax mailings, which killed five people and sickened 17 others. In June, the former bioweapons researcher settled a lawsuit alleging privacy violations by the Justice Department for $5.85 million. Prosecutors later officially "excluded" him as a suspect in the attacks.

Authorities now say that bacteriologist Bruce E. Ivins, who committed suicide in July, was the sole perpetrator of the crime.

Do you think a new administration will get to the bottom of this story? Is Leahy still pushing for resolution? I still think this story is the key to blowing the lid on the whole cabal.

The Nature of the Beast

Glenn, this is a hard, cold look at the unfolding reality of just who will be manning the levers in the next administration. Your readers may wish to take a moment to consider this related post by Chris Floyd:

So that Washington Post article ends with this:

Those of us who can take such freedom for granted should salute these honorees and their many colleagues who risk life and liberty every day to do their jobs.

I am not sure what to make of this. It is not as though the US government is absent from the discussion. I suppose that sentence might mean: As long as we support the US establishment on the whole, we can pick at the edges a bit and still keep our jobs.

Freedom of the press?

From the link referring to Scott Horton's footnote:

I myself was twice warned by PBS producers, in advance of appearances on The Newshour with Jim Lehrer, that I could use the word “torture” in the abstract but that I was to refrain from applying it to the administration’s policies. And after an interview with CNN in which I spoke of the administration’s torture policy, I was told by the producer, “That’s okay for CNN International, but we can’t use it on the domestic feed."

This passage raises some very interesting questions. Given the parallels in the warnings from PBS and CNN, it appears that somehow, these producers are basically censoring the news. On what authority are they doing this? Is corporate management of both organizations requiring it, or is the government forcing these organizations to censor?

This puts the failure of the media to follow up on the "Pentagon propaganda" issue in an interesting light. Is this another story that has been censored?

How many other stories have been censored? [Paging Sibel Edmonds. Sibel Edmonds to the white courtesy phone.]

Will there still be censorship on January 21, 2009?

always bitterly amusing to see...

...the official washington chattering-class disconnect between our ideals, as in celebrating the true defense of and adherence to first amendment principles, and our actions, in which our government operates illegal torture centers and is defended in the same editorial pages of the washington post for doing so. foolish to expect consistency, i guess...

you're spot on about the true obama defining himself in this cascade of appointments -- no surprise that he's truly centrist, only surprising if you've not been paying attention (or busy constructing false narratives). the brennan ascension is troubling, but who are acceptable alternatives? the intelligence community has seen its work become so politicized that anyone from the outside coming in would be immediately suspicious.
