Letters to the Editor

Letters posted here are associated with the following article:
Has there been too much bipartisanship or too little? The reward Joe Lieberman will receive today is justified by the claimed need for more bipartisanship harmony. Is it even possible to have more than we have now?
The letters thread is now closed.
  • The only type excluded from Obama's new appointees

are the left. Given the economic crisis that is a terrible error. Asking for interpretations of what went wrong and what needs to be done from Citigroup top execs won't give him the info he needs. How would FDR have fared w/o the advice of leftist economists? Not well likely since he implemented many of their recommendations.

  • I agree

Bipartisanship is no exit strategy from the grotesque rancor that billows out of Washington. What I'd like to see is a respectful, genial, castrated partisanship. Where's the Society for Cutting Up Men when you need them?

  • What's the point of contacting Congress

What's the point of contacting congress to demand the removal of Lieberman if they don't even read your e-mail? Case in point: I wrote my Senator's Feinstein and Boxer. Boxer I called AND wrote because she's a member of the same Committee that will be voting on Lieberman.

Senator Feinstein's office just e-mailed me about my letter. Problem is, that she didn't address my concerns or the topic of my letter, BUT ADDRESSED THE DEMOCRATIC PARTY'S STATED REASON FOR BEING TROUBLED BY LIEBERMAN.

I wrote to her about Lieberman and his role in the anthrax letters, NOT his role in the McCain campaign. Senator Boxer is a keeper, but Feinstein is perfectly happy to insure the separation between the public and the political elite, she's gotta go!

Each and every time I write Feinstein her reply has nothing to do with my concern. I think she thinks I'm stupid! All she does is regurgitate the dogma of the day. Feinstein makes me feel invisible in the political process and I really, really dislike her very much for that.

We need to re-extinct the DINO's.

  • Hyperbipartisanshipwreck

"Bipartisanship" is part of the propaganda of assimilation that keeps the status quo intact, and good for you for pointing it out, Mr. Greenwald. I only wish it got more attention. Rather than new ideas entering Washington, what we're likelier to see is both wings of the Business Party, Democrat and Republican alike, coming together, circling the wagons, even in the face of an overwhelming urge for change on the part of the majority of voters. The disconnect between the Beltway and the rest of the country is only going to get worse as "bipartisan" bad ideas get trotted out for people to gawk at, for the corporate media to gush over.

It's why I most favored with Obama's run the methodology, the grassroots-and-wired nature of it, as the real hope for our country, versus his candidacy as an end unto itself, and certainly not the Democratic Party suddenly becoming progressive (not going to happen, particularly as the spirit of "bipartisanship" settles like smog on everything in DC).

New parties need to enter into the political fray, representing new ideas, bringing change, and relying on grassroots support and active organizing to get heard. That methodology is the key to honest reform, versus hoping that glad-handing Democrats and Republicans are going to be vanguards for change, instead of the stewards for the status quo they've always been.

  • Oh!, muntaba

"I won't hold my breath but might cross my fingers." -- muntaba

Given Obama's Grand and Glorious prelude to his administration, and the Congressional Democrats' recent activities, you might also think about crossing your legs also.

Harry Reid must pay a price for this. Perhaps being forced to share a room with Steny Hoyer at a nudist resort would be a good place to start.

  • Joe Lieberman and executive power

Glenn -- It seems to me that your strong views on the Congress's role in curbing executive power and your dismay at today's Joe Lieberman vote (both of which I, in my gut, share) might be at loggerheads.

Look at it this way: Suppose, as Rachel Maddow and I and a million others think, Lieberman suddenly evinces zeal and dedication in investigating the White House. To the extent that this shines disinfecting light on the executive, this is good, n'est-ce pas?

So, somebody has to do it. Lieberman or Akaka? With Lieberman, the Dems have some political cushion; Obama is popular, Congress is not. But now Reid can say, "Hey, it's not us harrassing President Obama. It's Joe Quisling running amok. He's not even a Democrat, and face it, he had us by the balls. We need that 60-vote majority." Dems can have their cake and eat it, too.

Nobody is more revolted by Joe's sanctimonious mug than I am. And we're all wary of Joe's priorities, whether regarding Middle Eastern policies or indulging his personal piques. But even so, somewhere (Robert Heinlein?) I learned the adage:

"There are two things to do with an enemy. Kill him, or make use of him." The latter just might be better statecraft.

  • AIPAC always gets what it wants

Lieberman was/is Obama's mentor in the senate.

AIPAC would have a shit fit if the Dems were so unkind as to strip Vichy Joe of his chair. Think of the danger to Israel!

Until we prevent foreign governments from controlling our elected officials there is NO HOPE FOR CHANGE.

  • GC!

I would be honored to mee the delightful Miss Annabella. Shall I wear a tutu for the occasion? Or would a Princess' tiara be more suitable?

What should I warble for this momentous meeting?

  • nothing more...

Clearly the Palace is oblivious to the gathering storm beyond the gates.

Thinking Russia 1917. Thinking China 1912.

Strange indeed how WashingtonDC thinks this kabuki it finds so clever brings it ever closer to the oblivion of having ignored too much for too long.

When the Palace gates are pushed in this bunch will have no idea what is happening and the shock of it will have them soiling themselves.

    History ignored is history relived.

WashingtonDC should not think itself above history.

Joe Lieberman did not win today. His "victory" likely will not bring him much comfort. The DC DEMs may think themselves quite clever. They are not. WashingtonDC may think itself insulated from the masses and able to ignore Americans who want good government and effective government. The delusion and illusion is entrenched well. But delusion and illusion are just that.

    Nothing more.

  • Economic Protest

This is being put on by the Ron Paul people and has some interesting supporters.

I would love to see the same kind of energy and mobilization efforts that were behind the anti-Prop. 8 movement channeled into more economic and pro-worker protests. Apparently, immigrant workers and their supporters are going to continue to put pressure on Obama - around the ICE raids and immigration reform, etc.

    Anti Fed protest. November 22.

Its heating up in Scamerica -- the masses are stirred by pocket book issues and the gross deception and corruption of their non responsive fake government ...
