Carter had a "White House Conference on the Family" (or some bullshit title) to bring the religious social orgs in contact with the Government so they could do great faith-debased things together. But Carter wanted to include all types of families, even those headed by, say, two women. The Evangelicals turned their backs on him, left the conference and ran to the waiting arms of the Republicans. They quickly adjusted their theology to fit the Repub's laissez faire and militarism. And they have been happy together ever since.
