In a stunning contrast to the discussion of US efforts to avoid criminalizing policy differences, the fate of Yemeni prisoners appears to be the biggest current hurdle to closing Guantanamo. As McClatchy reports this morning:

Yemeni officials say they're ready to try many of the men and imprison those who are convicted, but they complain that U.S. officials refuse to share evidence with them.

"Based on the information we have, some of the Guantanamo prisoners have nothing to do with terrorism," said the Yemeni foreign minister, Abu Bakr al Kirbi. "We cannot imprison them without a court sentence. We cannot do something that is against our laws. We are accountable to our own public."

Perhaps more American citizens need to heed the words of al Kirbi. He knows that the public in Yemen hold their officials accountable. It's too bad the American public doesn't.

Obama may not go there but his successor almost definitely will.
