Joe Scarborough: Hoisted by his own sanctimonious petard

The MSNBC star, who today used the "F-word" on his show, has repeatedly demanded massive FCC fines for similar infractions.

The letters thread is now closed.

A little comedy is sometimes necessary

And you provided my first smile of the day.

Joe was pretty casual with his F-bomb, he didn't stutter or anything. It's almost like he'd said it before.

FCC jusridiction?

Some folks are saying that cable channels are not subject to FCC fines for indecency in the same way as broadcast channels. Could someone clarify this? It sure seems from the quotes Glenn provides that Joe thought MTV was in line for fines.

I also like Joe's backpedalling with "If I said it". Kinda hard to do when it's right there on the tape a few seconds earlier. Barnicle's jaw drop is hilarious.

Just maybe...

all the phony outrage used to manipulate people will finally end when every single sanctimonious jerk gets caught doing the very thing he/she whines about 24/7. One can dream.

Buck up or buck off

But whatever you do, don't pass the buck!

We must unite around this mos pressing issue of our times! From now on, citizen's interested in expressing their opinion shall write an email to the media, or their representative...But you need to know that it is not enough to simply send the email - You must print out the email and buy youself a plane ticket, and personally deliver that email to the recipent.

Because, y'know, it gets there more better. Unfortunately, these days, those commie airlines charge you extra for the soapbox, 'cause it doesn't fit in the overhead bin.

Scarborough sure came across as a phony.

Which is what he is.

@Wabanatta_3

Rush's drug use and hypocrisy on that topic didn't bother his fans.

And I really would not like to not imagine replays of the wardrobe malfunction happening to the likes of Rush.

Say it aint so...aww, fuck it!

so, where do WE write to the FCC to complain about this terrible, threat to the sanctity of my, and my children's ears? Let us get the man FINED! Perhaps he and Bono can pool their money? Lemmeknow...

FCC regulates the public airwaves

Their power derives form the commons of electromagnetic spectrum they regulate. Cable is not over the air so they have no jurisdiction.

That said, basic cable is usually kept clean because they don't WANT Congress to extend the jurisdiction of the FCC to cover mass communication that doesn't go over the public spectrum.

Gimme an "F"

The worst "F" word in use on talk radio and cable TV stands for "Fake Outrage."

For most of those hacks, it's their only product.

Sanctimonious bastard

Joe "Sanctimonious" Scarborough is one of the worst examples of a "journalist" on TV today. Of, if not a "journalist", then one of the worst "pundits".

He continually riles up the weak minded over silly side issues while issues of uppermost importance to the nation go begging for attention. I hope that the FCC does to him what he wanted done to others in the past. That would be sweet justice. Real sweet.

FCC and cable

not regulated

Not offended by military love fest

Every chance the MSM gets to spill forth the obscenity of military propaganda, not REPORTING their glorious ventures of brutality for freedom, but EXTOLLING the nobility of violence for G-d and country.

Nary are the puritans offended by this indoctrination and desensitization of the youth. It's fine to condition each successive generation to a bloodthirsty, military culture, but God forbid-

our culture is under attack if the yung'ns hear the f- word.

Monday, November 10, 2008 08:06 AM

Scarborough...

Is obviously a hypocritical fucker (just wanted to use the word) if he doesn't demand that the FCC fine him.

Monday, November 10, 2008 08:10 AM

Nothing new here...

Scratch a conservative, find a hippocrate.

Monday, November 10, 2008 08:13 AM

Normally..

I'm happy to read the morning Greenwald. But this is beneath you. You're a guy who tackles real issues. Leave " lipstick on a pig" moments to the bottom-feeders.

Scarborough Country = rank hypocrisy

Little Joe said the F-word, which in and of itself is a nonevent, but as GG is always quick to point out some people clearly do not understand the concept of shame or their own childish hypocrisy.

Any kid that's of an age to be interested in the SuperBowl has heard the F-word many many times in real life before he/she was ever exposed to it on television. Any male child who sees a fleeting glimpse of a woman's breast is not traumatized but probably titillated (poor pun intended) or possibly indifferent depending on age.

Here's my question: is our Puritan heritage still such a part of our collective cultural DNA that some can become outraged by a split second glimpse of the human breast but can't muster the same level of moral outrage over the killing of innocents (morally sanitized with the ever clever "collateral damage") based on lies? I'd say emphatically yes. Because God knows nobody, and I mean nobody, wants to see the human body in all its unclothed glory. Ick. God forbid we objectify the beauty of form over some good old 24 style violence. Violence good, women's breasts bad. I think I get it. Almost Talibanish in its prudishness and assbackwardsness dontcha think?

All I have to say is I'd like to hear more F-bombs and see more breasts rather than see killing and maiming in the name of spreading freedom and the American way of life. I guess the tripartite gift America has to give to the world (no it's not our form of government) is the artery clogging wonders of McDonald's, Charles Ponzi inspired banking schemes, and the sweet sweet freedom of an early exit from earthly existence.

We've got a long way to go.

Monday, November 10, 2008 08:16 AM

Hmm...

Maybe I'm recalling incorrectly, but aren't Joan Walsh and Scarborough like bff or something? Wonder if she'll have anything on this.

Monday, November 10, 2008 08:19 AM

Oh The Torture

The most obscene message to come out of Joe Scarborough's mouth in recent years has been his steady defense of torturing enemy combatants. Nothing or no one on television pissed me off more than hearing that Pensacola Pimp trying to explain how defying the Geneva Convention and our Constitution was worth it in protecting "the American people." What a complete idiot. I'll send him some Cheetos.

Monday, November 10, 2008 08:21 AM

Shocked!

I am soooooo offended--- by Joe Scarbourgh's dirty mouth and all the filth that he spews forth. Too bad I am not talking about the f-bomb he dropped today.

Monday, November 10, 2008 08:21 AM

Think of the Children

This is an outrage. I demand an apology from Scarborough, his producer, from the head of MSNBC news division, and from the CEO of NBC. Further, I agree with Greenwald that the FCC should fine MSNBC $550,000 for this disgusting behavior. No, wait. Double that fine to $1,100,000.00. On the grounds that Scarborough is twice the boob that Janet Jackson revealed at the Superbowl.
