Another myth fallen: Obama's "Jewish problem"

All year long, GOP activists, neocons and pundits claimed Jews would vote in large numbers against Obama. From Gallup today: Jews favor Obama by a 3-1 margin.

Legal Suit in PA

How can we have a man in the White House who was not born in the US. Has no one heard that Obama refuses to present his Birth Certificate. It was my impression that if a candidate was not born in the US, he/she could not run for the highest office. Obama has refused to present his birth certificate. There is a legal suit against Obama because he refuses to present his birth certificate. How is it that the media has not presented the story to the public?

No leave me the fuck alone and I'll do the same, like I've done for the entire time I've posted here up until three days ago.

omooex

Here is an idea. Why don't you ask him yourself? Moron. Asking Glenn a questiong isn't like praying to god and hoping for an answer. I'll do it here and on the recent radio show thread where the deletions took place.

Hey Glenn, it is time for post deletions, amirite?

Friday, October 24, 2008 03:22 PM

Yes that's true Free speech on Salon isn't free it's about who gets paid what for which.

And I've recommended before that if Glenn the self professed world's champion for free speech is so irritated by any speech that differs from his, then he should seriously consider making the letters-to portion of this blog a subscription fee only affair. It's cheaper to do that than it is to hire a full time mod to prescreen everything before posting. And the odds are that only like minded clones would bother to shell out the money for the honor of being a "FOG", Friend Of Glenn. Technically it can't be impossible to do this and the potential revenue to perennially broke Salon Communications could be impressive.

So what do you say, Glenn? Put our money where your mouth is. Stand up for REAL Speech; speech you pay for. Otherwise you're just being a thin skinned capricious fool the same as the wingnuts you're always poking at. And that dear sir is rank hypocrisy.

Deleting?

Its his blog, and I suppose he could delete whatever he wants. But he has a much higher degree of tolerance than I. I don't believe there's any evidence that he's deleted anybody's posts recently. Its not nice to throw around such an accusation, especially when he goes to all the trouble of letting us denigrate ourselves in this manner.

Friday, October 24, 2008 03:07 PM

wait, nevermind

He is only deleting my posts. Continue taking your pot shots I guess, prick.

Friday, October 24, 2008 03:05 PM

omooex

You realize Glenn has now started deleting our posts because you just have to keep going with this, right?

I apologized, but I'm sure you've done nothing wrong and so have no need.

Beagle of Doom, meet Chris Sinnard

I'm sure you have a lot to talk about.

Elie Wiesel said

"The left hates Israel the right hates the Jews." You're all worthless scum as far as I'm concerned and you can all sizzle and fry in hell.

And trust me, we Jews who aren't trying on your Kapo armbands would be thrilled to walk away from this godforsaken piece of shit country given the right circumstances. And it doesn't matter which one you is in the White House either.

I can hardly wait for the Salon calls to "Leave Jew Leave!!!"

I could eat a ham sandwich at the dome of the rock, and never get rid of the appellation. -- omooex

How about instead you eat poison and die in a fire?

Friday, October 24, 2008 02:37 PM

Blunderdog, I agree

Islam has a similar definition of inclusion. You can of course 'become' a muslim, but as my father was, so am I considered de facto. I never realized this until I lived in a muslim country and was constantly excoriated for being such a heretic. I argued that I had never read the Koran, did not consider myself muslim, and that my mother is Catholic. They regarded those factors as nothing more than the excuses of an islmamo-bum with no discipline. In essence, I could eat a ham sandwich at the dome of the rock, and never get rid of the appellation.

@ ehillesum

Is a Catholic who practices birth-control still a Catholic?

I'm inclined to say that because "Jewish" is (often? sometimes?) defined solely on the basis of one's mother, there are going to be vastly different levels of interpretation.

One very committed and educated orthodox Jew told me once that there's not really an "excommunication" practice in Judaism, so even someone who is an ATHEIST (let alone "secular," whatever that means) is considered a Jew by other members of his synagogue. It's just that by not practicing, he's not showing his expected reverence for God.

I think part of that is just that religious Jews are motivated to take a longer view of a person's life. If someone hasn't practiced for decades, and then shows up at services one day, everyone is delighted to see them.

In any case--because Judaism is a hereditary religion, there's likely never to be a good way of completely separating the word "Jew" into "strictly ethnic" or "strictly religious" segments. There's an awful lot of room in there for disagreement.

Chiaroscuro

You misunderstood. Its all the plumbers that are supposed to be rich. And they will be too, when we elect the Mcain/Palin/Plumber ticket.

My name is Joe the Plumber, and I approved this message.

e.g.,

In just one ad, they manage to tie Shulman to terrorists, Cindy Sheehan, Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, and tax hikes (which are apparently as bad as terrorism in the GOP playbook).

Is a secular Jew still a Jew?

I am really wondering what you all think.

It seems quite possible that in 20 years when the parents of Jewish babyboomers are gone and many of their babyboomer children are gone as well, that the question of what is a Jew will become more important than it is now. (Apparently it has become quite a bit more difficult in Israel for American Jews to prove their Jewishness.

But when you consider that what made the Jews special for so many years was that they were "God's chosen people," what exactly is it that will make Jews who do not believe in God special? In light of the fact that Jews come from many parts of the world, if they don't have their faith, what will they have?

I happen to believe that God did choose the Jews to carry his message to mankind and that it explains why, long after the Hittites and all the other -ites passed from the scene, that small band is still right in the center or world history.
