Those who want Joe Lieberman to remain a Democrat

Anonymous, cowardly Democratic consultants illustrate why the party has stood for nothing for so long.

The letters thread is now closed.

He has to go

Before he starts making trouble with his committee chairmanships.

Heard you on CBC this AM

Good interview. How did that come about? She didn't mention your blogging, and listed your second rather than most recent book when introducing you, so I gather she wasn't all that familiar with you.

Not sure how it came about, but they wanted to talk about the second book because they wanted the interview to be about Bush's legacy, which is what the second book is about.

From another former Connecticut Democrat

I live in Connecticut, and was one of the registered Democrats that voted against Lieberman in the 2006 Primary. My subsequent decision to leave the Connecticut Democratic Party was based largely on the party's decision to continue embracing him as one of its own, despite his numerous disgusting acts. If the Democratic Party stands for Lieberman, then it stands for nothing. Connecticut's Democratic Party is pathetic for perpetuating this one-sided loyalty for a scoundrel. Who would want to be a party to that?

I've often wondered what Lieberman is holding over the Dems

Does he have photos of a Reid, Pelosi, Emmanuel Three way or what? I certainly don't think any one politician or machine could be THAT important, especially given the environment in the past couple of months.

Take away his label, his connections, any illusions that he represents the left

"It might be gratifying in the short term to get him, but in the long run what does it really get you?"

Hung out on a clothesline with like colors to flap in the wind, it might get us a new Senator.

goodbye joe

It's time for you to explore the real-world meaning of the term Independent.

Perhpas there's a small island somewhere that's longing for a Democracy Of One.

You picked the wrong side. You actively campaigned against the winner. Elections have consequences.

You will not be missed, Joe.

Yay for Glenn Greenwald!

Good job Mr. G! The idea that Lieberman is owed anything is reprehensible - consider: for the first half of the Mccain campaign, folks like McCain and Lieberman insisted that the world is too dangerous for an inexperienced guy like Obama - a fair criticism indeed - experience was McCain's strongest argument against Obama and Lieberman was there to back him up - say what you want about those two, but they do share years of experience. And then Palin! And Joe Lieberman - the supposed sober Joe Lieberman, says with a straight face that she's capable of leading our nation in these perilous times should McCain bite the dust - and this DAYS after telling us that Obama - who at least had met with numerous international leaders and had traveled the world - after vetting himself via the world press - after winning the hearts of minds of one of our largest states - that Obama was dangerously unprepared for this job. And WHAT could drive Joe to say that one was ready (Palin) - while one was not?

His Neo-Con ideology that puts Israel over America...because Palin is an arch-Christian and we know their take on the Holy land - it all fits in their plans for Armageddon...so Lieberman sold out his nation for a fundie Christian who may not care about Jews - but LOVES Israel...

The Israel-First Community, that's who!

Who are the people who are going to object if Democrats no longer want to empower him with powerful Committee Chairs and majority status in the Senate?

AIPAC? John Hagee? The ADL? The neocons? Various warmongering "centrists"? The National Endowment for Democracy? I dunno, Bill Maher?

Those asserting this are the same people who claimed throughout 2006 -- idiotically, as it turned out -- that defeating Lieberman in the primary would destroy the Democrats' chances in the mid-term elections because Americans would perceive that the party was too liberal, too intolerant and too anti-war.

Haven't you heard? The Democratic party is "antiwar enough".

Sorry for an early OT...but this was unbelievable

Rich Lowry today...

"It should have surprised no one, then, that Powell marked his 30th appearance on Meet the Press with an endorsement of Barack Obama. Powell's other favored means of communication -- confiding in Bob Woodward and leaking anonymously to newspapers -- weren't suited to the task. Only half an hour with a docile Tom Brokaw would do."

Is he freakin serious? After writing a piece of political pornography about Palin and her 'starburst' smile and propping up the Bush/Cheney regime for eight years?

Cast him out/

Amen! Lieberman has not just left the Democratic reservation. He is aiding and abetting - make that actively involved in attacking the reservation. Allowing for divergent views within a party is one thing. Wilful blindness that you have an enemy in your midst quite another.

Any allowances the Democrats might make to Lieberman after winning a clear majority would be nothing but craven fear of confrontation. It is not as if he could be relied on as part of a filibuster-proof majority anyway. That presupposes party unitly and solidarity, and he is as far fom that as can be imagined.

Tuesday, October 21, 2008 07:38 AM

Please remove him

As a CT voter I am very much in favor of removing his chairmanships and expelling him from the caucus. Why can't democrats ever show a little testicular fortitude?

Tuesday, October 21, 2008 07:40 AM

One disagreement

I read the article you refer to and I believe the hypothetical was if Lieberman was the 60th vote, not if Dems had more than 60. Two very different situations I'm sure you'll agree.

Tough call too. I'm among those that would love to see Lieberman run out of town on a rail but with the country in such dire shape and the damage Bush will leave behind, the chance to have those 60 votes needed to get things done in the face of what is sure to be an obstructionist and virulent minority outweighs the need to treat Lieberman as he richly deserves.

That being said if the Dems have 60 or more without Lieberman or over 50 without him, then he's GOT to go. I wouldn't put him in charge of the congressional washroom.

Tuesday, October 21, 2008 07:42 AM

Oh Glenn,

You cannot write a post like this and be considered serious. First you need to find another democratic consultant who says that that Lieberman should be waterboarded. Then you can say that the truth lies somewhere in between.

But the good news is that now that Britain is proposing that you have to show a passport in order to purchase a cellphone chip, you can be a serious journalist and write about how we are protecting our freedoms in the USA.
