Earlier in the campaign, when McCain started coming out with television adds comparing Obama to a false messiah and accusing him of being a child molester (sort of) I thought to myself that McCain was letting a bunch of right wing maniacs run his campaign and probably he was too disoriented to be orchestrating anything, but at this point I realize that the most hateful, angry and grossly disgusting aspects of McCain's campaign actually originate with him because he is a hateful, angry disgusting person. It just so happens that those around him, Palin et al, are all equally contemptible people.
They dance 'round and 'round the fire at night and are consumed by flames.
...increasingly quite ugly, even by the standards of GOP campaigning tactics...
Instantly I was laughing, trying to figure the correct analog.
I.e., increasingly quite harmful, even by the standards of drive-by shootings...
...increasingly quite painful, even by the standards of Chilean torturers...
...increasingly quite bad smelling, even by the standards of giant stacks of rotting corpses...
It has become clear that there may be a larger, more universally altering purpose for this election.
What began as an ideological clash, then morphed into a generational clash, has now become a spiritual battle.
While reporters and pundits argue over the superficialities of personality and polls, and networks capitalize on the ratings and revenue generated by their coverage; as voters argue in web forums, living rooms and office water coolers and debate the tedious details, the battle lines are being drawn.
Where you align yourself may have eternal consequences.
The gulf between good and evil, truth and fiction, intellectual integrity and manipulative distortion has widened irrevocably. With every new smear campaign characterizing Obama as frightening and dangerous, it feels as if the powers of darkness are snuffing out the light.
The underlying malignant tone of this election, like a modulating bass line beneath the dissonant melody of the media sound bites, serves sometimes only to etherizes hope.
But, I think this is a test of who we really are. What we are willing to do to make it happen. Quit bitching and take action! Do everything you can. I am trying my damndest.
I know Good will triumph over Evil, as millions of witnesses across the world observe the outcome of this election and are reaffirmed in their convictions. Trust that there is a higher order to the universe.
Is this a limited hang out? Are you consciously trying to bring scorn upon those who have legitimate concerns about the use of political assassinations in this country?
The gunman had dinner with Neil Bush the night before.
You were doing a good job until this flub. The dinner was in Colorado and was with members Hinckley's family, not John Hinckley.
You mention the black community's fear. In DC, the good oppressed people of color, who surround the White House etc., openly say what you expressed. You admit, it's a pain in the tummy pit.
Hospitality.
Mark Twain would maybe say, `curls one's liver. I know you understand. The mere thought.
Never underestimate. These folk are the epitome of `ugly. I said it post-war. I say it @ UT.
Immortality.
Personally, I prefer to exercise the freedom to think and speak freely, and I assume this is a forum where I can do that.-- gandhi
Yes. Did someone tell you different? I think and speak freely, and thus I "freely" spoke to you about what I thought about your post. There is no "preference" about it. It just is.
Fortunately, they are preaching to their own choir.
Hopefully US citizens will also have the courage to face up to some very ugly truths about their country.-- gandhi
That's what I mean about 'drama queen'. While I'm sure you can find millions who need to "face up", it has been more than clear that most here, and certainly I, don't need to "face up". We've been aware for a very long time.
Nice analogs...
I couldn't help myself:
"...Increasingly quite frothy, even by the standards of jackals with end-stage rabies."
@peakdavid
The dinner was in Colorado and was with members Hinckley's family, not John Hinckley.
Oh, well that's all right then. You just shot my whole argument down in flames, right? Nit-pickers unite!
From AP, March 31 1981:
"The family of the man charged with trying to assassinate President Reagan is acquainted with the family of Vice-President George Bush and had made large contributions to his political campaign ... Scott Hinckley, brother of John W. Hinckley Jr. was to have dined tonight in Denver at the home of Neil Bush, one of the Vice-President's sons ... The Houston Post said it was unable to reach Scott Hinckley, vice-president of his father's Denver-based firm, Vanderbilt Energy Corporation, for comment. Neil Bush lives in Denver, where he works for Standard Oil Company of Indiana. In 1978, Neil Bush served as campaign manager for his brother, George W. Bush, the Vice-President's eldest son, who made an unsuccessful bid for Congress. Neil lived in Lubbock, Texas, throughout much of 1978, where John Hinckley lived from 1974 through 1980."
Nothing to see here, folks.
@ Kitt
I am ignoring you. Drama queen, heal thyself.
That someone yelled out "kill him" from the audience of Palin's little hate fest this morning are scary.
It's unclear if the riled up person was talking about Ayres or Obama...probably Professor Ayres.
To me it doesn't matter, it's beyond the pale.

Some unintentional comedy for y'all :
....An even greater uncertainty than his inexperience, however,is his attitude towards the lawhe must uphold upon entering office .Along with the burden of the Presidency comes the responsibility of serving one's citizens with honor.A President must respect the history, culture, and law of great men who came bfore him.Obama has charmed his way to a Presidential nomination using his oratory skills and personal charisma. But those who look closer see the illusion fade, and find young man withgout regard for history or Constitutional tradition. They find a man bent on transforming the United States into a radical left shell of what it once stood for, and what it could stand for again.
..snip....
Today the citizens of this republic stand ready to protect their nation and their way of life from those who would manipulate and usurp such freedom .
