I noticed that Somerby at Daily Howler doesn't think Obama campaign should be bothering with the Keating Five story at this time. I think he has a 'let pigs muck in their own muck' sentiment. Or put another way, McCain is destroying himself all by himself. It's a fools errand to try and help him to hurry things along.
And as Somerby often is, he is critical of Josh Marshall and Steve Benen because he thinks Marshall and Benen should have all along been pounding more on media to 'do their job' so that the campaign won't have to.
STEVE BENEN(10/6/08): There is, of course, a chance that the criticisms of McCain for his role in this scandal may take the Obama campaign off its game. If McCain wants to attack Obama for his tenuous associations, there's a reasonable case to be made that Obama shouldn't wrestle the proverbial pig, and should instead stick to his message about the economy.
Damn straight. A fist-fight about who has bad character may not play well for Obama, who has been cruising of late.It would be easier for Obama to stick to the high road if the mainstream press corps had done its job. But weak-willed fellows like Josh and Steve will simply never adopt this framework as they gaze at American politics. Josh has reinvented himself as a fool in the course of this year’s campaign—but even so, he routinely skips questions of mainstream press conduct. Steve is along for the ride.--Daily Howler

I suspect this was McCain's original instinct in "suspending" his campaign and threatening to skip the first Presidential debate.-- >Lish
I disagree. I don't think McCain had anything in particular in mind when he "suspended his campaign" beyond making a show of himself.
If (God forbid) a lone gunman shoots Obama, we will all remember who stirred up the hatred and sowed the lies that terrorized rightwing fools into believing he was a real threat to them.
Bush, Cheney and McCain have been using the politics of fear and hate for eight long years. It is a form of terrorism.

I do wonder how we will manage with McCain at the helm. His bombing run into Hanoi didn't work out so well.
If (God forbid)...-- gandi
I have to tell you, that in my opinion, it is extremely uncalled for to bring that scenario into the conversation of this campaign. Every time I read someone write something to that affect I shudder as to why they would be prone to put that into print. What is the point of stating that scenario? I can't imagine.
will reveal that almost half of American voters are knee-jerk fools that feed on Republican propaganda.
Our financial crisis may well be overshadowed by a severe mental crisis.
I was watching Bill Maher a couple of weeks ago when he had Ralph Nader on and a reporter from New Republic(I think) and she brought out the minority mortgage bit and Nader hit her back saying nah un, the minorities were the best at paying their mortgages back. I wonder where you find the data about that, wouldn't it be helpful to smack all those GOPers with the no, sorry the poor colored people were actually doing what they were supposed to.
I do wonder how many mortgages that have been forclosed on were the ones bought by housing flippers. Did that have anything to do with the bubble, buying a house, making a few amenity improvements then selling it at a fair profit? Now forclosing because marble counter tops and extra bathrooms aren't really driving people to spend hundreds of thousands of extra dollars?
As for McCain and his nasty speeches, well I hope Obama and Biden hear them and stop saying how much they like and respect John McCain during interviews and debates. Stop respecting someone who would rip you in half with distortions and lies.
I don't think McCain's ilk will die off. They'll fester and continue to be a force (if smaller) in our society.
I have plenty of people in my community that fully believe what he and others are saying and plenty more who have small misgivings, but can't imagine voting for anyone else.
Golly, I hope you're right.
Read it and weep, Mr. McCain. You are on the defensive throughout the country. You are having to defend Nebraska, for God's sake, and you've lost Virginia, and you've abandoned Michigan. Your low-road can't save you now.

Better get your mind right Mr. McCain, and your affairs in order. You are about to go down in a truly historic way. Ralph Stanley just came out for Obama.

I always thought of McCain as kind of a good fellow, with a temper. Now it is clear that he has a mean streak a mile wide. It showed through in the debate with his body language and now appears to be coming out for all to see. This kind of temperament in the white house for four years would be a disaster , not only for those working under him, but also for those try to work with him. "If you are not with me, you are against me" will continue with disastrous results. Common wisdom says the presidency ages you beyond your years (Look at before and after photos of W). Given the health and age McCain is already starting with, a person can only imagine his mental and physical state after a few years, and how this combined with his volatile nastiness will play out in the nation and the world.
