John McCain's unprecedentedly ugly speech today The increasingly petty and ugly attacks on Barack Obama by a desperate, dying movement are a microcosm of the last eight years.

  • Well, Slap off my turban and call me Hortense...

Y"all ought to check out,,, reverent pause.. Joe Klein over at Swampland now on this subject.

    Somebody's spiking his Metamucil, too.

The miracles are falling like rain.

  • What about the people who agree with McCain?

If and when Obama wins the election, there will be a throng of seething, angry right wingers who buy into the message of the McCain-Palin campaign who feel marginalized, threatened and resentful. I would like to say that we can ignore these people, but I am worried that they will morph, like conservatives did over the last quarter century, into a movement out for revenge and eager to regain power. I am worried that if this happens, the repercussions, should they attain power, will be worse than they were this time around.

So how does Obama deal with them? Can and should they be appeased? Or are they a dying breed about whom I am overly concerned? I wish I knew.

  • sorry, pwogs, but the truth is too harsh for you to admit...

Ghandi, please cool it with the drama queen shit

    gandhi philosophized:

Personally, I prefer to exercise the freedom to think and speak freely, and I assume this is a forum where I can do that.

    kitt gits his factoids wrong:

Yes. Did someone tell you different? I think and speak freely, and thus I "freely" spoke to you about what I thought about your post. There is no "preference" about it. It just is.

oops, for pwoper pwogwessives, fwee spweech is an abstract concept to be used against one's enemies (um, the Bad Guys), and the Good Guys get a fwee pass...

  • ...And Tomorrow The Debate.

How should Obama respond to the smears when he confronts McCain? Set the record straight or go after McCain as a liar? Take the high road or bring up the Keating Five? Should he be wary of the "angry black man" stereotype or should he rip into McCain? All these answers could be right but since Obama has run a near perfect campaign it isn't likely he'll slip up.

Additionally, it's kind of tragic that the whole edifice of the Conservative movement should collapse on McCain's head but since he has proved to be the only Republican with any stature at all it's fitting. By the way, Glenn, Nixon resigned in '74.

  • Update V

That's about as disgusting as it gets. It looks like it's time to re-read the laws on inciting to riot.

How do we make a filing to list the Republican Party as a hate group that advocates violence?

  • By all means, let's stick to the ACTUAL facts...

"McCain wants to increase our reliance on nuclear energy. 92% of the uranium used in civilian power plants is IMPORTED - 32% is imported from RUSSIA."

...As in 'facts, traditionally defined as stuff that's true'. Most of the world's uranium is currently being produced by Canada, Australia and Kazakhstan. The US has plenty of uranium reserves in several states, but we are just emerging from years of domination by the flat-earth fundamentalists, and have not been allowed to mine it. In fact, the fundies just inveigled Congress - in the middle of an economic crisis - into locking up a million acres of uranium reserves right here in Arizona, on grounds that the Grand Canyon is located in the same state.

Another four hundred Dow points lost today, as Congress fiddles while the uranium doesn't burn.

  • Hortense

You must be one of those pwoper pwogwessives guilty of fwee spweech. And, your turban had nothing to do with any of it.

Sorry, All. Sometimes reading this thread is what I imagine the world would be like on some really good weed. Child of the 60s that I am, the only thing I ever inhaled was a Marlboro red - other than what wafted through the heating ducts in the dorm. I'm feeling deprived for having missed out.

  • She's just nervous...

Bystander... Thanks for digging up the link; I found it educational, and hoped others might, too. Sadly, I'm far too lazy to type a proper link, and since they don't even click through on this site, why bother? I have pineapples to hollow out.

    Name from an old joke...

    Q. Is that Hortense?

    A. Nah, she's just nervous.

  • Thank you, Bystander

for your comments at 4:57 and 5:43 (I think the times are accurate). It took me a little while to "understand" Mr. Celery, but once I took the time to read his posts I had a new respect (and affection) for him. So much so, that this perfect stranger sent him a get-well card during his hospital stay.

I agree with you, too, about the direction conversations sometimes take here. Very often it makes me laugh, especially when Cocktailhag wants you to slap him/her and call him/her something else.

  • A couple of comments

"And the symbols of our nation have become gulags, the waterboard, an endless stream of bombs and occupations, and people imprisoned forever with no charges of any kind."

Sadly, these shameful manifestations of the Bush/Cheney fascism seem to bother only a tiny fraction of the electorate. If the economy wasn't about to collapse and the nation face a likely economic depression, McCain would have probably won the elections.

McCain, who has managed to create an image entirely different from his true self has now morphed into the real McCain.-an extremely angry, mean, nasty and dangerous person. I expect him to try to whip the extreme right-wing into a frenzy and I wouldn't be surprised if there's unprecedented violence on election day with McCain goon squads preventing voters from reaching their polls. As of today, I don't believe that McCain is willing to lose this elections under any circumstances. McCain is now behaving like a National Socialist German Workers' Party, aka The Nazi Party, circa 1929.
