John McCain's unprecedentedly ugly speech today

The increasingly petty and ugly attacks on Barack Obama by a desperate, dying movement are a microcosm of the last eight years.

    Downfall

I was thinking during my morning commute today about the brilliant German film from 2004, Downfall (Der Untergang), with Bruno Ganz as Hitler. After Hitler's suicide in the bunker, we witness the suicides of Goebbels and his wife, after his wife poisoned their children. And then outside the bunker, various suicides of field officers and other dead enders, who cannot bear the future without their fallen leader. And the comparison came to mind about the 25% or so that still love and support Bush. And I see that support being transferred over to Palin. I don't see, however, any epidemic of suicides after Obama wins. I realize that in America, we cannot compare the Right to Nazi Germany, that is verboten. Any historical comparisons/lessons, in fact, are only to be used to shed light on the decadent Left. The Right in this country is sui generis, without historical parallel, or so all the right wing freaks would have us believe. Okay, so forget everything I wrote....
