    Obama's lead in the polls

    Obama is now consistently 5 or more points ahead in nationwide polls. But how foretelling is this of his prospects for the election, given the distortions of the electoral system? Obama like most Democrats leads mainly in the populous states that are underrepresented in the electoral college. How big an overall lead is required to suggest that he can win 270 votes there?
