The right's two-pronged religion of rage and self-pity

The group with the most power persuades itself that it is weak, oppressed and treated with great unfairness.

God bless you, Glenn

Skewer the scribes, the hypocrites, the Pharisees.

They wouldn't recognize Jesus if he zapped them in the ass with a lightning bolt.

What would Jesus do with these asshats?

Not much. He'd just throw his head back, and laugh.

12 steps for the right

when your leader is a dry drunk his character defects seep down into your party. the two you describe -- agressive rage at "others" and morbid self pity -- are classic alcoholic characteristics. bush may leave, but we'll still be left with the results of a particular piss poor bit of parenting from mama and papa bush: they sent their kid to the wrong bill, graham and not wilson.

If Obama wins.........

the Democratic Party WILL be dismantled, as it should have been after the Civil War.

Easy Explanation

I'm not sure how they square all of this in their little brains exactly, but it makes my head hurt.

It's easy to keep such thoughts square when you're a blockhead.

Brilliant

Awww.....

The sad part is going to be when they are ascending into the heavens and the rest of us are consumed by the fire and are sucked down into hell, lead by none other than Obama the Anti-christ himself!

ROCK ON!

The Reverse Conspiracy Theories of the Right

The right are Brave Rebels who stand up for the rich, the powerful, the most patriarchal version of the majority religion, and demand the rich and powerful be given more privileges and unaccountable power, and yet they feel they are always being repressed by the poor, the ethnic minorities, the non-believers.

Of necessity it requires complex and illogical schemes, because fundamentally it's the silliest thing ever to expect anyone to believe.

McCain: "Life isn't fair"

On cue this morning:

Asked why Obama has been rising as the Wall Street crisis has dominated attention, McCain said on Fox News Channel: "Because life isn’t fair.”

Right on

Beautiful! But don't forget the complicity, duplicity?, of the so-called liberal hold outs, such as NPR. They too have become "lapdogs", afraid of being labeled with the liberal bias by the pill-popping, little boy lovin', Rush Limbaugh and Co. Virtually all the media that doesn't fit neatly into the Right's orthodoxy, has fallen victim to Stockholm Syndrome wherein they continuously self-censor themselves.

I blame the neocons

The religious right was not involved with the two policies that killed the Republican party - the Iraq war and banking reform.

These were pure neocon/wsj initiatives.

Yeah, the religious right now backs the war - they are an authoritarian lot - but they would not have led us to this war on their own. Heck, I doubt they could even find Iraq on a map.

They are just sheep that have been duped and led to slaughter much like the rest of us.

We MUST Resist This!

This is why it's so important that we take these folks to task IN PERSON whenever we encounter them spewing such nonsense.

Be courteous and respectful when that wingnut co-worker tells you how the Right is "persecuted." Point out that the Republicans, who have claimed to be representing the interests of the Right, have been running the Dept of Justice, police, and military.

When they tell you the media is run by a bunch of loony liberals who prevent any right-wing ideals from being presented fairly, point out that Rush Limbaugh, Bill O'Reilly, Michelle Malkin (etc ad nauseum) have somehow managed to attract huge followings and earn enormous amounts of money by spouting the most radical right-wing perspectives.

When they tell you "the liberals" in Washington have ruined everything by raising taxes and giving money to the poor, point out that of the past four administrations, the three REPUBLICAN Presidents have spent our tax money with reckless abandon, while the DEMOCRAT President (yeah, there was only one) generated a budget surplus.

And, as diplomatically as possible, point out that all the crap they're telling you is directly and patently FALSE. Don't call them a liar, don't engage in personal crap, just stick to your guns about your understanding of our shared reality.

As a society, we have fallen victim to our tradition of avoiding potentially contentious subjects of conversation.

When some wingnut says to you, "We wouldn't have a budget deficit if Clinton hadn't spent all our tax money on welfare for poor unemployed illegal immigrants," and you just stand there blinking in amazement, the speaker thinks that means you agree with the "point" being raised.

Yes, and

The people who come up with these excuses for the right know how to count... and they know that the people to whom they pander do not.

They know the difference between a million and a billion... and know that the people to whom they pander will get as worked up about "wasting 3 million dollars of TAXPAYER MONEY on bears!" as they will on wasting 700 billion dollars on the bailout or the war of the day.

They know which side their bread is buttered on... and know that, to get enough votes to win in a still-democratic system (they DO know how to count), they have to pander to people who can barely afford either bread or butter.

They know who the real elites are, and they know who controls the media (they and/or their bosses are, and do)... and they know how to manipulate the people who are incensed at being manipulated by the elites and the media.

Specifics?

Hi, Glenn:

I'm a fan, but I have a hard time not noticing that you said the below in this post:

Go pick whatever right-wing journals or polemicists you want and (with some isolated exceptions) what you will find is this simultaneously self-loving and self-pitying worldview permeating virtually everything they say, think and believe.

You didnt give any specifics, even though earlier today you said:

Fourth, nothing is easier and cheaper -- or more worthless -- than making sweeping, categorical criticisms of large groups without bothering to identify a single specific.

And that was in a post criticizing an online chat, not a fully conceived written-out piece.

Just sayin'...

Keep up the good work.
