He didn't take any steps to ensure members of Congress were briefed. He was fine with the equally illegal warrantless surveillance program that stayed in place. His FBI systematically abused Patriot Act instruments for years.

The FBI also acted pretty much honorably during at least the unfolding of the systematic torture by the government. The refused to participate in black site tortures, withdrew from interrogations at Guantanamo and Abu Ghraib, and did blow the whistle up through their chain of command.

How well they are doing in years subsequent is still a matter to be decided.

But they've always had a credibility problem with investigations that go bad. And ever since the TV cameras were allowed in the chambers, the Congress has had a problem with reconciling oversight responsibilities with acting careers.

This opens up several lines of thought: Is it incompetence? Is it a cover-up? Or is it ideology? Or is it a combination of the above?

Is there a private sector company that can fulfill the role of the FBI if it was completely discredited as a government instituion? It's been discussed that part of the conservative republican platform is that government is part of the problem. And the FBI is a government entity. Does that ideology extend to law enforcement? This seems to either be happening to protect someone higher up (which I think it the most obvious), or to discredit the FBI, or maybe even to kill both birds with one stone. I wonder, because the military and legal arms of government in general seems insulated from the calculated degregation of say FEMA (the incompetent adventurism of our Supreme Miltary Leader aside).

Just a thought that this whole anthrax mess brings up.

We finally have congress folk who make it plain that they do not believe the FBI on this issue. But, so what?

Will the MSM hold the FBI's collective feet to the fire? Will they hound upper level FBI men asking by sticking mics in their face and asking questions every time they go into public?

Will congress take any action? Will the FBI's budget get cut or someone get impeached? Will anyone pay any price at all for the obvious refusal to answer congressional questions honestly?

I wager no. I would love to be wrong, but the history of these things over the last 30 years says that nothing will happen.

Allow me to add my alienated voice to the chorus welcoming you back.
