The GOP's cheerful viciousness

Yet again, the GOP launches brutal personality and cultural attacks on the Democratic candidate. Yet again, Democrats seem determined to allow it to do so.

McCain is not a hero

OK, deep breath: here's my personal attack on McCain.

He is not a war hero. Not in the sense most people think of when they hear the phrase.

Yesterday, I heard something very telling on NPR, which got me to thinking about this whole war hero business: McCain gave way under torture and signed a bogus confession for the North Vietnamese.

No reasonable person can blame him for that. It's understandable.

But here's what happened afterward: he confessed that he was terrified that his father would hear about it. So he decided to repent and provoke the punishment he felt he deserved.

McCain's later provocative behavior toward his captors was not about sacrificing for his country, though he had to convince himself that that was the case, in order to survive, probably. Nobody can blame him for that, either.

However, there is another way to read this story.

McCain was a CHILD in a horrific situation, terrified of displeasing his overbearing father. When he actually did break down and do something that would severely displease his father, his masochism manifested, and he decided to let the North Vietnamese symbolically take the place of his father and punish him for his "betrayal" of his father. He took the punishment because he felt unworthy of his father. It was not about betraying the abstract country. It was about betraying the concrete father.

It's a classic case for psychoanalysis. Betrayal of the father = betrayal of country. Betrayal must be punished = provoke the punishment you -- with the low self-esteem that comes from having a critical parent, and the fear of incurring the wrath of that parent -- you feel you deserve.

McCain is called a war hero. But I suspect that love of country and the desire to serve are the superficial phrases covering his deeper, probably unconscious motivation. He was acting out his childhood tragedy.

I blame the fathers who start these wars and sacrifice their children to them.

Today's Fun Moment

I'm sure all you people know this already, but Talking Points Memo has soved the mystery of the mansion which appeared behind McCain when he spoke. It was supposed to be Walter Reed Army Medical Center. You know, where our wounded woarriors go to grow new arms, legs and brains.

Instead, our wonderful patriotic GOP tech squad came up with Walter Reed Middle School in Hollywood California!!!

Now that's the way to show your respeck for our wounded heroes.

Of course McCain didn't recognise it. He thought it was a house Cindy was putting on the market.

How Obama's responding and ... Dirty Work

The Obama campaign does not have to openly try to destroy Sarah Palin. The have the mainstream media eagerly available to do the Democrats character assassination, and the Obama campaign's what, 20000 attack responders on the net? That's how it will be done.

While Obama smiles and waves and pretends to be "above politics", the "post racial" community organizer from Harvard, and holds NAZI inspired large propaganda spectacles in large venues like a "rock star".

Ooooooooohhh, Obama !!!!!!! The anointed one!!!!! Not politics as usual !!!!

No, worse.

Palin for President

It's become achingly clear that Palin isn't a stalking horse for the right, but the Presidential candidate for the Republicans. All nice old Mr. McCain has to do is to hold the door open and then, once he and Palin are elected, leave the scene one way or another. Then we have our own homegrown Margaret Thatcher, American-style: all bile and bite without even the occasional wit and wisdom, and ruthless to the max. I wonder if this wasn't concocted even while the primaries were ongoing, that Palin would be the one regardless of whoever won the Republican primaries.

It' also clear that the dumbing down of the electorate can no longer be seen as an unintended consequence of decades of media pollution, cultural dreck, and worsening schools, but the intention itself. Just like the nobility and Church during the Dark Ages, the rich will expend handsomely to keep the poor ignorant and enthralled. It's happening now. Palin is a symptom. The social disease is more profound, however, having been purposely induced.

We are not the "decider?"

What's worst is that more than few ignoramuses out here in the hustings listen to this horse manure.

@Jim White

Westmoreland spokesman Brian Robinson said the congressman was using the Webster's dictionary meaning of the word and was unaware of additional racial context.

Yeah, right. A guy from Georgia isn't going to know the racist overtones of "uppity".

I'm shocked. I've seen Lynn do his "I'm a patient Southern Lawyer Ms. Plame" bit on the House Judiciary Committee.

He gives absolutely no indication of being able to use Webster's dictionary.

One Way to Morph Republican Fear of Obama

@rphillips111 (September 5, 2008 08:26 AM):

"While Obama smiles and waves and pretends to be "above politics", the "post racial" community organizer from Harvard, and holds NAZI inspired large propaganda spectacles in large venues like a "rock star".

"Ooooooooohhh, Obama !!!!!!! The anointed one!!!!! Not politics as usual !!!!

"No, worse."

rphillips111 (Man, that's hard for me to pronounce),

you sound a little anxious.

Check out this video by a Republican pundit who metamorphosed his fear of Obama into an "abstract generalized hatred" and an endorsement of McCain, whom he had opposed during the Republican primaries.

It may very well help you in dealing with your own understandable trepidation:
