The GOP's cheerful viciousness

Yet again, the GOP launches brutal personality and cultural attacks on the Democratic candidate. Yet again, Democrats seem determined to allow it to do so.

The letters thread is now closed.

"Watch as he desperately pretends he hasn't sacrificed every principle he ever had (if he had any) to get to this point."

You mean Obama, right?

I didn't know Jeremiah Wright was a raving, racist lunatic. (Memo: Disinvited Wright to his campaign kickoff months earlier because "you know you can get kinda rough at times.")

I cannot disown Jeremiah Wright any more than I can disown my white grandmother. (Memo: Wright thrown off the train a few weeks later.)

I'll stick to public financing for my campaign. (Memo: hell, let's just roll in the dough and forget my "promise.")

I'm against changing the FISA law. (Memo: voted for the new FISA law.)

The surge is a failure. (Memo: Tells O'Reilly tonight that the surge has succeeded.)

Said we should end the embargo of Cuba because it was a failure. (Memo: Speaking to a Cuban-American audience in Miami, said we should keep the embargo "because it is an important inducement for change.")

Said "no" on a questionnaire that asked if we should crack down on business that hire illegal immigrants. (Memo: In January debate said, "We do have to crack down on those employers that are taking advantage of the situation."

Obama's an empty suit, a calculating pol, a liar and a fraud.

Xrandu...

You misread that part, although it was a little convoluted. GG said attacking Palin was a stupid strategy

""as opposed to McCain and/or Palin's ideology""

That sentence should have had some space in it, but I get that attacking her, rather than attacking McCain or JUST Palin's ideology is a bad strategy. The link put it into better perspective.

Yes, I remember that they used to be able to present linear arguments. Now they just post phrases next to asterisks.

Retired Military Patriot

She did not take questions from reporters.

There's no point in asking Palin about her positions on national policy issues until she's been told what those will be.

Until then we expect her to run on wedge-issue hypocrises and a platform of "Democrats bad, Republicans good", more than enough to impress The Base into believing the pubs have a candidate.

Okay...

...But I would really like to know what Glenn thinks the Dems should attack, and how.

I am all for attacking them: Every McCain contradiction, ever bad policy stance, every major mistake in their record, etc. In fact, they did seem to hammer McCain on a number of issues during the convention. (Although some of it was vague, such as calling him "4 more years of more of the same," or saying McCain voted with Bush 90% of the time.)

I want to hear what Greenwald thinks the Dems should do -- specifically.

WHAT WILL IT TAKE?

Why can't someone in the Democratic party summon the courage to itemize the crimes, lies, incompetence and calousness of the last eight years? How far do the Republicans have to go before they will really fight back. Do the Republicans have to come out and say what they and many of their constituents have been thinking all along: we don't want no N----R in the Whitehouse?!

Those few among us, eh?

Those of us who have served our communities at the local level - on city councils, commissions, and other volunteer positions - as well as those who pay attention to what goes on in those forums, will recognize Sarah Palin as a type of person commonly seen there. -- TJ111

Yesssss. Quite. Queen of the PTA in an earlier era. The problem is.... engage citizens of that type make up a fairly small part of the electorate. And many people who balk at being shoved around by a neighborhood queen bee feel that officious air is actually an essential sign of "leadership" in high office.

I think you should post Glenn's bitch slap of you. He asked why you still posted here.

Why do you?

-- heru-ur

I think you should post it so I can see it too.

I must have missed it. I don't monitor these threads like Chris does. Some days, even weeks, go by and I don't read Salon at all.

If he asked me why I post here, I'd need to see the context. I saw the context of his rip on adnoto.

Besides, I know you are all part of a cabal whose sole purpose is to malign me. You, Chris, Ass Ind and all your sockpuppets.

Not understanding the American mentality

There's a reason American football is more popular than any other sport in this country. American psychic is enamored with fighting-the frontier spirit and all that crap, and consider those who try to avoid a fight as wimps and cowards. Fighting back shouldn't mean going after an opponent's family or personal life, the right wing's method. Remember the Republican goons who forcibly stopped the recount in Dade county in 2000? There was never any Democratic response. Remember the road blocks that prevented black Floridians from getting to their voting locations? The Democrats allowed it to happen. Swift Boat liars claiming that Kerry faked his Vietnam war injuries and didn't deserve his medals? Kerry is totally passive till it's too late. Impeachment, despite war crimes and attacks on the Constitutions by Bush/Cheney are met by "impeachment is off the table". Why was there no mention of the Keating Five in Denver? Or of McCain's othe corruptions ever mentioned? Why isn't the DNC, at least indirectly supporting the POW who present a very plausible case that McCain had never been tortured in captivity and betrayed his country? One of them is extreme right wing former Rep. Bob Dornan(CA) for crying out loud! A refusal to go toe-to-toe with the right wing will not be rewarded by admiration for staying above the frey by the electorate, it will be rewarded by another defeat and the end of our democracy, such as it is.

grow a spine, democrats

Use the same sort of veiled attacks as Palin. She attacked Michele Obama by saying that she has always been proud of her country. Obama/Biden need to say things like, "Our opponents advocate abstinence only sex education. How is that working for our country with its soaring teenage pregnancy rates?"

Time to attack. The high road doesn't work. Don't praise her speech; tear it apart.
