The GOP's cheerful viciousness

Yet again, the GOP launches brutal personality and cultural attacks on the Democratic candidate. Yet again, Democrats seem determined to allow it to do so.

The letters thread is now closed.

Sorry, the douchebag in question is -- ? ≠ !. I'm sure that's some funny techie thing, not illustrative of a lack of imagination.

@ omooex, revealing link

The eight minute quickie discussion Obama held today with the M$M that MSNBC reported on shows how Obama will continue to respond to the Repug attacks. He puts Palehose and McShameful in the context of where they belong. Again not a wimp response.

On the accusations of sexist treatment of Palin: "If they want to work the refs they are free to do so, and I think the public can make their judgments about this," he said. "The notion that any questions about her work in Alaska is somehow not relevant to her potentially being vice president of the United States, doesn’t make too much sense to me. I think she’s got a compelling story, but I assume that she wants to be treated the same way that guys want to be treated, which means that their records are under scrutiny. I’ve been through this for 19 months. She’s been through it, what four days so far?"

Obama and his surrogates have repeatedly argued that McCain does not understand the economy in general and that the Republican convention this week was ignoring economic issues. The senator has been saying for weeks that he is best-suited to tackle the problems hardworking families are facing.

"I believe that the American people need change, they want change, and I’m in the best position to bring it and on a whole host of issues from energy to health care to education," he said. "If at some point Sen. McCain is-- actually addresses those issues, then I think that’s gonna be a useful debate for the American people to listen to."

Glenn Greenwald

The reason, Glenn, for this is that Dems ARE different than Repubs. It is a Republican-generated falacy that all politicians and political parties stoop to the exact same strategies.

The Dems are not a Borg-like single mind where they all line up and attack like vultures. Good or bad, Dems tend to focus on their own individual constituencies more than a common Democratic party line or talking point.

To your correct insights on Obama's successful campaign conduct (ignoring the sideshows, staying on message) I would add only: he is also persistently working the organizational angles (GOTV, targeting new voters, etc.).
These tactics (in service of a "New Kind of Politics" strategy) might not guarantee victory in November per se, but I believe they are the only way he can win. He cannot win by playing the tilted GOP/Corporate Media News Cycle game that you adroitly labeled a sideshow.

I believe Barack will win if current conditions hold. It's a new day. New demographics are in play; it is a time to "pass the torch...." Post 9/11 shock/trauma has significantly faded. Plus, "it's the economy, stupid."

@omooex

I'm sure that's some funny techie thing ...

Actually, it's a special-ops thing, but then liberals wouldn't know anything about that.

I think they should run with this...

I’ve been through this for 19 months. She’s been through it, what four days so far?"

Whenever the Republicans complain, they should also be asked what they thought of the smears against Obama and what they're willing to do stop those as well.

@ shooter242

Must be nice for you to have the conversation so centered around Palin huh, it keeps everyone from talking about the paper thin McCain and you get to have a wet dream at the same time. But it isn't going to last and you know that. Palin and McCain are about to get torn to pieces. Pay special attention to the crippled McCain tonight as he attempts to say he's the real agent of change. Watch as he desperately pretends he hasn't sacrificed every principle he ever had (if he had any) to get to this point. Watch him try to raise his hands over his head and fail. Observe as the audience at the convention cheers for every dark, hateful thing he says. Watch as he panders and grins a kind of smile that can only be termed impish.

@Retired Military Patriot

It's sad that you let your brain go to mush after you retired.

Special Ops thing...

Wait, I thought I was talking to an adult male all this time. And it turns out you're like a twelve your old in his underwear sitting on a stack of Soldier of Fortune magazines to get you high enough to see daddy's computer monitor. If I were you, I'd spend less time on this posting space you hate so much, and more time erasing the porn you loaded on to your daddy's hard drive before he gets home.

A brilliant, incisive, and witty riposte. What I particularly liked was the way you cited, in exquisite detail, her record as an elected official.

To wit:

* went from PTA to the Governor's Mansion

* bore five children and accepted a special needs child without

killing it

* has a kid going to Iraq

* Can shoot a moose and

* look hot while doing it,

* and most of all, looks natural smiling, unlike liberal females.

Good God, you're right. "Liberalism is in trouble."

Stop worrying- he gets it

RMP --

Why would the Republicans spend a whole night of their convention attacking ordinary people?

With the nation watching, the Republicans mocked, dismissed, and actually laughed out loud at Americans who engage in community service and organizing.

Our convention was different. We gave the stage to everyday Americans who hunger for change and stepped up to make phone calls, knock on doors, and raise money in small amounts in their communities.

You may have missed it, but we also showed the country a video with the faces and voices of those organizers, volunteers, and donors from every corner of the country.

What you didn't hear from the Republicans at their convention is a single new idea about how to make the healthcare system work, get our economy moving for the middle class, or improve education.

Just attacks -- on me, and on you.

But what the McCain attack squad doesn't understand is that people like you -- who devote part of their busy lives to organizing and building their communities -- have the power to change this country.

With your help, that's exactly what we're going to do.

Thank you,

Barack
