The GOP's cheerful viciousness

Yet again, the GOP launches brutal personality and cultural attacks on the Democratic candidate. Yet again, Democrats seem determined to allow it to do so.

The letters thread is now closed.

Leave John McCain ALOOOOOOOONE...

until he makes his acceptance speech tonight. With it he will make the final knot in the rope, and dig himself fully into the grave. He is going to posit himself and Grandma Palin as the true reformers! Or possibly the completers of the Bush reforms.

After that it's just a matter of setting him and Sarah up for the "debates".

I think Obama knows what he is about.

And never count the American people out. If sacrificing their children and grandchildren to George Bush and his ilk are what they want to do, nothing can stop them. Not even Obama.

Show up at her rallies waving "Jesus was a community organizer" signs

It would be wonderful to see Palin's rallies greeted by a sea of waving "Jesus was a community organizer" signs.

Message to Obama & Biden

Here's an e-mail I've just sent to Obama's website. I'm under no illusions that he will ever get to read it, or that if, by some fluke, he does read it, it will have any effect on him. But hey, if enough of us send a similar message to him in the next few days, who knows? At least we tried.

Here is the link: http://my.barackobama.com/page/content/contact/

NEGATIVE CAMPAIGNING HAS BEEN SHOWN TO BE EFFECTIVE---THE ONLY REASON THAT BUSH GOT ELECTED! DON'T LET THE SLANDERS, LIES AND ATTACKS GO UNANSWERED---AND DON'T BE SHY ABOUT MAKING ATTACKS YOURSELVES. LEARN FROM GORE'S AND KERRY'S MISTAKES! THE MORE "GENTLEMANLY" YOU ARE TOWARDS PALIN & MCCAIN, THE MORE YOU ARE HURTING YOURSELVES (AND THE REST OF US!)

ALSO KEEP IN MIND THAT FEAR IS MORE POWERFUL THAN HOPE, AS DOCUMENTED IN NUMEROUS CLINICAL STUDIES. WHEN THE REPUBLICANS TELL AMERICANS TO FEAR ALL THE TAX INCREASES THE DEMOCRATS WILL IMPOSE ON THEM, AND HOW THEY (THE DEMS) WON'T KEEP US SAFE AGAINST THE BAD GUYS, AND ALL YOU ANSWER WITH IS A MESSAGE OF "CHANGE", AND ALL THE GOOD THINGS YOU WILL DO FOR THE COUNTRY, THEIR RATINGS GO UP IN THE POLLS, WHILE YOURS GO DOWN.

MUCH AS IT MAY GO AGAINST YOUR GRAIN, YOU MUST FIGHT FIRE WITH FIRE IN 21ST CENTURY AMERICAN POLITICS. IF NOT, YOU CAN KISS YOUR CHANCES OF WINNING GOODBYE.

How about the forbidden word

Contemporary GOP rhetoric and mentality is eerily reminiscent of the National Socialist Party's rhetoric and mentality circa 1929. Back then, it was all about being anti-cosmopolitanism, Germany against the decadent world, Germany as the protector of western civilization, back to nativity, the militarism, the longing for a mythological past:the Nazis longing for their Aryan roots, the GOP for the frontier days. The Democrats should start forcing the electorate to face reality-the GOP is now a bona fide fascist party, so the Democrats should start using the word fascism each time they mention the contemporary GOP and McCain&Palin-it's the very scary and unavoidable truth. Those who think that the US cannot become a fascist state are deluding themselves. The large cities in pre-Nazi Germany were very liberal and sophisticated, yes, even decadent, but rural Germany, just like the rural US was isolated, very conservative, xenophobic, religious and suspicious of the "elite" of the big cities. Remember how that turned out. Our Constitution is not nearly powerful enough to protect us from becoming a fascist country, and we are certainly already on the way.

cj & Kitt

Count me among the number who think that sexual politics has played a role in Palin's career.

In fact, there's a video circulating that shows McCain checking her out while she's giving her "introductory" speech, something I didn't notice when it was happening live, because I was actually watching and listening to her.

The musical accompaniment: Getting to know you...

I'll have to try and find it.

Is Sarah Palin an anti-free market corporate socialist?

There's no shortage of those in the Republican Party.

Her support for a $500 million direct subsidy to Transcanada to build a pipeline connecting BP & Exxon gas fields to BP & Exxon tar sands projects in Alberta is some evidence for that, right?

Of course, then you'd have to say that the Republican Congress was also engaging in anti-free market corporate socialism when they delivered $18 billion in Loan Guarantees to the pipeline project.

Have the communists taken over the Republican Party?

It's a question worth asking, isn't it?

The rise of the Soviet state was characterized by close cooperation between political actors and industrial interests, as was the rise of the National Socialist state in Germany.

There are plenty of like-minded people in the Republican Party - and corporate welfare queens like Sarah Palin are among the worst of the lot.

I have not seen the video but that is exactly what my own mother said. My mom is an ex model and knows being "checked out" and said there was no doubt about it.

Over half of U.S. voters (51%) think reporters are trying to hurt Sarah Palin

with their news coverage.

The findings, nevertheless, are troublesome for the embattled news industry and parallel what voters said in surveys earlier this summer. Sixty-eight percent (68%) of voters now believe most reporters try to help the candidate they want to win, and 49% believe reporters are trying to help Obama this year. Only 14% think they are trying to help McCain. In another survey, 55% said media bias is a bigger problem for the electoral process than large campaign donations.

While this helped Obama vs. Hillary, this will hurt him against McCain.......told ya!

@ Ron Pauliac

You said it was wrong to call Palin a "Trollop" and yet you called her a chippy on p. 11.

Then you said:

It is perfectly appropriate to question her sincerity, authenticity and integrity. She's just another Gannon waiting to happen.

Ron Pauliac, what does chippy mean?

Late to the party but...

Yes, Kathleen. Yes. Over the issues, over the idiocy of bomb bomb Iran, and every single nasty little self-serving flip-flop. Absolutely.

made me laugh out loud

One showboat technique that the dems should continue to use is the Triumph of the Will spectacles like the one in Denver last week. What was more impressive for the tribal American than any words apoken there was the POWER that was projected by this new political morality.

Wow, that's funny. One of the biggest laugh lines last night was her mocking of Obama's pretentious Greek temple set.

You think it's "impressive." Normal people see it as pretentious and presumptuous.

By the way, nice comparison to the Nazi spectacle, though.
