1. PALIN: “Our opponents say, again and again, that drilling will not solve all of America's energy problems - as if we all didn't know that already. But the fact that drilling won't solve every problem is no excuse to do nothing at all.”
REALITY: She said “I beg to disagree with any candidate who would say we can't drill our way out of our problem or that more supply won't ultimately affect prices. Of course it will affect prices. Energy being a global market, it's impossible to venture a guess on (specific) prices.” [Investor’s Business Daily, 7/11/08]
2. PALIN: “Senator McCain also promises to use the power of veto in defense of the public interest - and as a chief executive, I can assure you it works.”
REALITY: As Governor, Palin continually vetoed funding for crucial education, health care and seniors programs.
3. PALIN: “I suspended the state fuel tax, and championed reform to end the abuses of earmark spending by Congress.”
REALITY: Over $589 Million in Federal Pork Requests During Palin’s Tenure as Governor. [2007 and 2008 Pig Book, www.cagw.org] Alaska Has Sought 31 Earmarks Worth $197.8 Million in Next Year’s Federal Budget. [LA Times, 9/1/08]
4. PALIN: “As Governor, I have a record of being a strong fiscal conservative and have vetoed millions in special projects pushed by legislators.”
REALITY: Palin increased taxes on oil Companies to pay for $1,200 giveaway to every resident in the state. [New York Times, 8/30/08]
5. PALIN: “And despite fierce opposition from oil company lobbyists, who kind of liked things the way they were, we broke their monopoly on power and resources.” This
REALITY: Palin Took $13,000 from Lobbyists Representing the Oil Industry in Her2006 Campaign for Governor. The lobbyists who donated to her campaign represent a range of industries, including oil and gas, tobacco, education and the Native Alaskan community. [Washington Times, September 1, 2008]
6. PALIN: “Taxes are too high … he wants to raise them.”
REALITY: Palin Supported Increasing Wasilla Sales Tax From 2 to 2.5 Percent to Build $14.7 Million Sports Center. [Anchorage Daily News, 3/9/02] Palin Increased Taxes on Oil Companies to Pay for $1,200 Giveaway to Every Resident in the State. [New York Times, 8/30/08]
Plus which the Obama tax plan would actually cut taxes for families making under 160,000, freeze them for those making between 160,000 and 250,000, and increase them by a couple percentage points on the upper 1%.
7. PALIN: “ But listening to him speak, it’s easy to forget that this is a man who has authored two memoirs but not a single major law or reform - not even in the state senate.”
REALITY: Senator Obama's name is on the most sweeping ethics reform act since Watergate, and on legislation designed to reduce the threat of unsecured nuclear weapons and materials. And that's just at the national level.
8. PALIN: “America needs more energy … our opponent is against producing it.”
REALITY: Obama has expressed support for a bipartisan compromisethat would cut tax breaks for oil companies, invest in alternative energies, and allow for limited new offshore drilling
9. PALIN: “Victory in Iraq is finally in sight … he wants to forfeit.”
REALITY: President Bush himself is looking a draw-down of forces in Iraq. Does that mean he wants to "forfeit" as well?
10. PALIN: “Terrorist states are seeking new-clear weapons without delay… he wants to meet them without preconditions.”
REALITY: Republicans themselves are now agree with direct talks with Iran.

Neat.
ask:
1. So do you then support her position that Alaska should vote to seceed from the United States?
1b. Do you suppor this for all States? Should all states vote on whether to remain part of the U.S?
2. Palin has a history of aggressively pursuing government earmarks. Does bringing her on board signal that you, too, are in favor of earmarks?
3. As Mayor, Palin's first actions were to fire city officials that she didn't feel were going to be "loyal" enough to her. Is this a policy that you plan to bring to the White House?
4. As Mayor, Palin tried to get the city library to ban some books that she didn't like. Will this be part of your platform?
etc.
If he fully vetted her, then he knew all this, and chose her anyway. Time to question his judgement.
You won't get any argument from me that some people here undercut their legitimate arguments by resorting to school house insults. Taking that away, are you telling us that because people are insulting here, we should forget the very real problems with not only her candicacy, but that of John McCain. If you are calling for a more refined discourse, I wish you would have started doing that about two years ago. Or have you not read some of the conservative blogs? Little Green Footballs comes to mind.
"blinded by cultural tribalism and personality appeals" - Glenn Greenwald.
This was funny, upon the first read, but caused concern after I thought about it.
As shooter242 documented, examples of cultural tribalism are rampant among the salonistas.
Glenn, you're projecting.

”Your empty-suit ticket got smoked by Sarah Palin last night. And there was substance.”-- T. Suarez
Would that be when she talked about the need to stop sending American jobs going overseas? No, she didn’t do that.
Would it be her railing against the fact that nearly 50 million Americans have no health coverage and that roughly 18,000 deaths a year are caused by it? No, she didn’t do that.
Then certainly she must have been hammering home the point that it’s been 7 GODDAMN YEARS SINCE 9.11 and absolutely NOTHING has been done to get Osama Bin Laden – someone who, thanks to Bush/Cheney/McCain – has been made into an undeniably victorious hero throughout the Middle East. No, she didn’t do that.
So, what were her issues of “substance”? She bitched and moaned and cried about being a “real American” with “small town values” who’s not taken seriously by those Democratic meanies - and Barack Obama's an "elitist"!! WAH! WAH! WAH!
Also, 'Patriot Extraordinaire' John McCain was shot down 40 years ago and even though he never shuts up about it, people still have a much higher favorability rating towards Obama. WAH! WAH! WAH! NOT FAIR! NOT FAIR!
JESUS !! Shut the fuck up already!! Accusing the left of “whining” considering that the rightwing’s ENTIRE PLATFORM for 2008 is to cry FOUL incessantly and avoid any talk of the economy, healthcare, lost jobs, skyrocketing deficit, Bin Laden’s victory, and the horrifically botched Iraqi & Afghanistan clusterfucks is pathetic even for the predictably whimpering bitchboys of the Republican Party!
Much of the initial coverage about Fort Hood turned out to be wrong. Is there anything wrong with that?
