Scenes from St. Paul -- Democracy Now's Amy Goodman arrested

Scores of people are tear-gassed. At least 250 people are arrested. And St. Paul is as militarized a scene as one will see in an American city.

The letters thread is now closed.

Paid for protestors

There is much evidence on the internet about cointel ops hiring thugs to start riots.

This is an old tactic used over and over again.

It happened in Seattle a few years ago during the bank riots there.

This is common in these situations. All the government wants is for things to get out of hand so they can bring down the hammer, even if they have to start it.

I was at the anti-war protest

I was there today, marching with everyone else. It was a sweltering day, but everyone was in good spirits. I did not see any fighting. there were lots of kids, older people, middle-age and younger people, and there were swarms of cops there, also. I would say that there were 15-20 standing on each side of several intersections. Some of them were in full riot gear. There were also cops on bikes and in shorts, etc. There were just LOTS of police there. I was appalled. I wonder who was looking for trouble. I just tried calling Mayor Coleman's office, to find out why Amy Goodman was arrested. The voice mailbox was overflowing.

hoisted froma thread at Open Left

This is audio of Amy's Producer explaining the arrest (0.00 / 0)
http://www.indybay.org/uploads...

According to the producer, Amy got involved in trying to get the police to release two DN people. That's when she was arrested. It's called obstruction of justice. "Modern obstruction of justice, in United States jurisdictions, refers to the crime of offering interference of any sort to the work of police..." Even her producer admits on the audio that there have been "breakaway marches" and "direct action" and "confrontations with police". There are people among the more peaceful protesters who want this type of thing. They want the cops to crack down. They are getting what they want.

Kitt, Derbig

Kitt: Ho HO! Drat! Foiled again! Why, you so cleverly exposed my secret! How could anyone but the cleverest of internet bullies have deduced that, because I've said I'm a Democrat, it means precisely the opposite! Higgledy Piggledy! You have unmasked me, roister doister!

You're such a turd you can't even comprehend that I'm joking. If you do comprehend I'm joking, you will be compelled to tell me my sense of humor isn't any good. Or something else. Just so it's contrary and suspicious. Because you've been bullying and bloviating around here longer than I have and I'm invading the territorial mark you spray around here ever day. You can't be anything but subjective. Whatever. Get f*ckin real. I was only posting to Greenwald to show him what kind of damage was done and to remind him that there are as many sides to a story as people involved.

For the record, I think Amy's arrest took place far away from where all this happened, so, be prepared, this was an entirely different event.

Derbig: You can't outparty me.

@Elephantman

...and it showed Amy Goodman interfering with officers who were arresting the two Democracy Now! producers.

And what earthly reason would the the officers have to arrest the two Democracy Now! producers? You want me to believe they were rioting, or causing a disruption, or even demonstrating?

Monday, September 1, 2008 06:39 PM

@ And BTW

So they broke some shit. Good for them! Not many people will take that risk, even if it is foolish, to draw attention to things. Plate, you say lots of them are vets. Are you saying they don't have the right to break a few windows after what was done to them?

Also, these type of demonstrations, if they turn nasty, are a perfect diversion for that "inevitable" terrorist attack. But it never comes, does it? Boy, I bet Bristol Palin wishes she could stave off the inevitable. But only we seem able to.

The demonstrations turned nasty? Good. And won't it be fun when it's sorted out who, besides Amy Goodman (may she be alright) got arrested. It might just be the issue of some affluential people.

Plate's photos are a bit less than convincing

It looked more like a 10k run/walk, except for the Darth Vaders. And, who was AP's source - the police maybe?

Amy Goodman Arrested...

i've noticed several other posts here which have taken th' position that not all th' facts are known yet...

this one thing is clear...

amy goodman is a commited small 'd' democracy activist...

change th' system by participation...

100% pacifist...

i've seen water with more malevolent nature than ms. goodman

@ merrycontrare -- thanks for the report ....

I should have my Rand McNally road atlas out so I have a better sense of who was where .... I gather the "main" antiwar demonstration went very well and was well attended ... I'm not sure where the confrontations, pepper spray/tear gas, rubber bullets were ...

I read that the windows of the Macy's Department store were smashed ...

It's hard to applaud such things. During the Rodney King riots in Los Angeles, my coworkers who lived in South Central said they didn't recognize any of the rioters/looters they saw ...

There are always gonna be bad-ass wannabes in search of a banner to do "shit" under ...

Can't make out the words

In the youtube of her arrest, Amy Goodman says something that ends "....from the convention floor". What was she saying?

Monday, September 1, 2008 06:45 PM

@The Plate

Maybe you can out-party me, I'm getting on in years. But at least I never had and never would refer to anybody as a "punk goofball". As soon as I read it, I earwormed "What's the Matter With Kids Today" from Bye-bye, Birdie.

Kids, with their crazy dances and ROCK AND ROLL

Why can't they be like we were,

perfect in every way!

Oh, What the Matter With Kids, To-day

ondelette re: rubber bullets

I just lost my first draft so if this is old news by now I apologize. While I don't know if rubber bullets were used in St. Paul, Mpls. cops were certainly given the okay by the Minneapolis City Council.

http://www.wakemag.org/blogs/politics_for_the_hell_of_it/mpls-city-council-committee-oks-rubber-bullet-use-on-protesters-if-necessary/

Sorry, I don't know how to condense.

A June 20th proposal put forth by Green Party council member Cam Gordon to ban the use of rubber bullets at RNC protest events was severly amended by the time the provision was passed in July. The amendments (condensed version):

- MPD presence at events will be based on public safety concerns, not intent to chill First Amendment rights.

- Mpls. cops will not use pepper spray, tear gas or projectiles (read: rubber bullets) - except in situations where use of force is necessary.

- MPD officers will not confiscate, destroy or tamper with cameras or other recording devices being used to document MPD enforcement actions. This shall not apply to situations in which a) cameras and recording devices are to be used as evidence, or b) MPD officers arrest an individual in possession of camera or r.d.

I guess they had no chioce but to arresr those I-Witness folks.

I didn't get down to the Capitol until between 2:30 and 3:00 this afternoon, and not to get all cute and fuzzy, but what I saw post-march was such a cool scene. Very ornate and clever signs and costumes, lots of amateur entertainment for the crowd, a real poditive vibe. Damn.

Casual_observer, thank you for the link to Klobuchar and the reminder to call on Ryback.
