Scenes from St. Paul -- Democracy Now's Amy Goodman arrested

Scores of people are tear-gassed. At least 250 people are arrested. And St. Paul is as militarized a scene as one will see in an American city.

The letters thread is now closed.

The Salonistas didn't like it when I mentioned the self-defense use of a shotgun.

But maybe they're more tolerant of "Progressive" guns than "Conservative" guns. Who knew?

About that second amendment...

The time is now folks.

The strongest reason for the people to retain the right to keep and bear arms is, as a last resort, to protect themselves against tyranny in government.

Thomas Jefferson

Thomas Jefferson saw this day coming 232 years ago.

Mine are oiled up and ready to rock.

What a sad situation.

Elephantman

I don't like Democracy Now!, nor anybody connected with it

from an earlier post:

All that I am attempting to do is to catch Amy Goodman in a lie... I'd like to show her up as a liar

This is your supreme goal? Hoping to see some kind of inconsistency in Amy Goodman's statements? That is so pathetic. There are a lot of important things at stake here, but you don't have a clue about any of it.

If you want to catch media figures lying, I recommend giving Rush Limbaugh a try. That should be a nice, easy target for you.

2nd Amendment

I have a large selection of flowers oiled up and ready to rock, for presentation to wandering jack-booted government thugs.

"Don't P-spray me bro!"

That's cute elephantbreath

I suppose you are now going to support the return of the Estate tax, publicly funded education and common property in land, all ideas of Thomas Jefferson's.

Obeying police orders

Even for journalists and legal observers, if the police ask you to 'step back', you ... step back. Even if you are Amy Goodman. Even if the cops have done something outrageous. -ELYDOG

Jesus, Mary and Joseph! We should rewrite our history and replace every mention of bravery, resistance and liberty with cowardice, acquiescence and bondage because that is what we are all about at this point. We should respect and obey "authority," the very authority that we fund, are supposed to control and who is supposed to serve us, even when they are doing "something outrageous?" A good American is an obedient American. Obedience is paramount. Astounding.

I can not even begin to relay how stunned and disgusted I am at the servile nature of some people. I just can't even really believe it. This unquestionable, deeply embedded conventional wisdom that we should not only allow but almost be thankful that the police can tell us where to stand, where we can and can not go, that they can lay their hands on us, any of us, for no reasonable or legitimate reason. Where did that belief even come from? It is so foreign and unAmerican. It makes the hair on the back of my neck stand on end.

This comments section actually frightens me and I do not frighten easily. If this is even close to a representative sample of politically and socially engaged Americans then there is literally no hope. It's not just the usual authoritarian trash spouting their nonsense either. There are self professed "liberals" engaging in arguments about things like whether or not Goodman was "obstructing" instead of pointing out that the entire premise of "obstructing" is, in this case, the issue and problem. The whole thing is absurd. To even engage in that argument you have to first accept the premise that the cops have absolute and complete power. Once you have done that you are already lost.

The truth is the cops should not have put their hands on her or impede her in any fashion, let alone rough her up and arrest her. She was no danger to anyone. They shouldn't be allowed to touch or otherwise dictate anything to any of us without a really really good reason. And guess what, just because they feel like it or just because we don't obey an obviously ridiculous and unlawful order is not a good enough reason. They are there to obey and serve us. And yet these abuses are all just accepted by the majority and we have people actually buying into the complete and utter bullshit that the police are there to make the area safe for the "legitimate" protesters? Just think about that one for a minute...legitimate... who is deciding who is and who is not legitimate? If it weren't for the more vociferous elements, the "protest march" would amount to a parade. Which is what it sounds like most of you want.

The fight to stem authoritarianism in this country is lost. "Little L" libertarian minded people of both the left and right are an endangered species it appears. Man it is scary.

Servile, unquestioning obedience feeds authoritarianism. The more obedience the larger the authoritarian beast.

E-man

Probably not, but who knows. You think that guy meets the definition of a "progressive"? Probably not, but that does not stop you from pretending you do.

A Question for CargoCult

@CargoCult (September 2, 2008 11:39 AM):

"Fair enough - but then Amy Goodman refuses to cover the Iraq Veterans Against the War march at the Republican National Convention - and so does Glenn Greenwald?"

Assuming it to be true (I haven't followed closely either Greenwald's or Goodman's coverage of either convention) that for one reason or another they didn't cover the march in question, what is your point?

Are you citing this as evidence that Goodman and Greenwald are Republican moles or unwitting dupes of the RNC?

Tuesday, September 2, 2008 12:58 PM

Are you still looking for your leader?

Servile, unquestioning obedience feeds authoritarianism. The more obedience the larger the authoritarian beast.

If you've found him, please take me to him. Or her.

Take me to your leader.

This is the final outrage of a failed presidency.

These tactics will be repudiated as just plain dumb & unnecessary contraventions of First Amendment rights of speech & assembly and nothing more. They have already been proven to be patently illegal in N.Y.C. $ Millions were paid for false arrest.

When we hold the politicians personally & legally responsible and accountable for these obscene activities we will have our republic back - but not before.

Credibility

It's obvious that the police were seriously heavy handed but it would lend a bit of credibility to the reporting if you at least mentioned some of the protestors (the anarchists?)who were equally out of hand if not more so. I saw video of protestors assaulting police as well. This in no way excuses the behavior of the police. I'm just sayin.
