Scenes from St. Paul -- Democracy Now's Amy Goodman arrested

Scores of people are tear-gassed. At least 250 people are arrested. And St. Paul is as militarized a scene as one will see in an American city.

The letters thread is now closed.

Two sides to a story!

L-ephant

This is getting tiresome.

Neither you nor I saw a video depicting the entire arrest.

Have you noticed there is a significant and obvious edit in the middle?

Frankly, who fucking cares if she is depicted as being on the ground or not? If she says she was, then in all likelihood she was neither imagining it nor lying.

Capiche?

-- Northwestwoods

...And if she WASN'T "pushed to the ground," then she was lying, right?

I think the difference between you and I is that you like Amy Goodman and you trust her word. And I don't. I don't like her, and I wouldn't trust her. And if there is a civil lawsuit stemming from this incident, it will likely turn on Amy Goodman's word (and any other plaintiff witnesses) versus the word of several police officers (and any other defense witnesses). Plus, any relevant video. So far, the video doesn't support Amy Goodman. That's a problem for her.

All that I am attempting to do is to catch Amy Goodman in a lie and an exaggeration with respect to an incident that she will likely use to publicize/politicize her point of view. I'd like to show her up as a liar, and I'd like to see her punished on the misdemeanor charge and certainly to lose any possible civil litigation.

fwiw -- I'm not sure where the claim that Goodman claimed she was thrown to the ground arose ...

from Juan Cole, copy and pasted from alternet (link at my name) -- numbers added by me for clarity ...

All three were violently manhandled by law enforcement officers. (1) Abdel Kouddous was slammed against a wall and the ground, leaving his arms scraped and bloodied. He sustained other injuries to his chest and back. (2) Salazar's violent arrest by baton-wielding officers, during which she was slammed to the ground while yelling, "I'm Press! Press!," resulted in her nose bleeding, as well as causing facial pain. (3) Goodman's arm was violently yanked by police as she was arrested.

This may be clearer in written form that by audio ... but Goodman had her arm "violently yanked" ... no allegation of being thrown to the floor here at least ..

damn this is tedious ...

yes, all these complaints about "celebrity culture" ... yes, let's argue over endlessly Amy Goodman ... as if her fine record did not speak for itself.

In Berekeley

The Blue Meanies (Santa Clara Sheriff's dept.) skipped the buckshot off the pavement and up into your knees. Lots of fun for the whole family and I can tell you that most of us were much better behaved than what I'm hearing.

Vets marching at RNC not well covered. At all.

To:Cargo Cult

I find this all very, very odd. Hard to figure out. A scam. I think we're being taken for a ride.

-- GlennGreenwald

Buckle up, could be, but I have to agree with Cargo on this!

I did not see Stolz interviewing those marching in uniform against the war. Must have missed that.

I'm starting to suspect you're working with the authorities to distract attention from the anthrax investigation. Very suspicious.

I'm pretty sure that if it weren't for Amy Goodman, 9/11 would never have happened, we wouldn't have invaded Iraq, and George Bush would have had only one term in office.

-- GlennGreenwald

I don't understand all that - perhaps some history that I'm not aware of ...?...

But to Cargocults point that the Veterans march was not well covered, even avoided, I have to agree :-/ Hope that does not revoke my fan-boy card.

Click my sig to see a bunch of coverage from around the internet. (But approaching zero on the big progressive 'established' sites)

Vets Marching at RNC -- 2490 hits at Google news for "last day only" ...

I read several moving accounts ... sorry I don't remember where ... sure, deserving of more coverage ... so what else is new ...

@AI - well, yes they have.

Oh, come on - plenty of left-wing web-based news outlets have said precisely that: "There is one party in the United States, and it is the corporate party."

Oh, there are issues on which the Republicans and Democrats do line up together, with only one or two dissenters, and there are other issues where ten or twenty Democrats cross party lines to vote with their issue-specific allies on the Republican side.

However, let's say that Gore had taken office (he was elected, until the real vote was counted - 5-4, wasn't it?)

1) Would he have dropped the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, and sat back and watched as it boiled over? Would he have told Sharon to stop with his inflammatory actions, which in retrospect seem like a deliberate attempt to rile up Palestinian militants?

2) Would he have allowed the energy companies to rip off old ladies for months on end (the so-called "energy crisis" of 2000-2001, which was really an engineered scam)? Would he have refused to let the FERC set rate caps?

3) If Al Gore got a memo on August 6th, 2001 that said the FBI had detected "preparations consistent with hijackings," do you think he would have done what GW Bush did - absolutely nothing? Maybe he would have warned the airlines to hire extra security, at least. Maybe he could have informed the public of the situation. But instead, GW Bush took an unusually long vacation in Crawford...

http://www.cnn.com/2004/ALLPOLITICS/04/10/august6.memo/

4) Would Al Gore have chosen a bunch of fossil fuel insiders and neocon lunatics to draw up a plan to invade Iraq and seize control of the oilfields - i.e. Cheney's National Energy Task Force? Forgot about that?

And Nader? Mr. Consumer Reports? Mr. "I won't make my tax returns public" - because he says it is an invasion of privacy? The multi-millionaire activist? How much B.S. do you expect people to swallow?

Since 1965, Ralph Nader has been the Left's most persistent and influential advocate. His activities have spawned numerous "consumer activist" nonprofits dedicated exclusively to fighting big business. But last June, when Nader was forced to disclose his personal finances, the public learned that he is among the wealthiest Americans and invests heavily in the free-market system. Nader claims that he gives most of his income to his network of nonprofits and similar groups — which means his anti-corporate activity is funded by investments in major corporations.

http://www.enterstageright.com/archive/articles/1200nader.htm

Cisco, for example - Nader never says a word about his $1.2 million investment in Cisco, which does a lot of business in China, and is very much in favor of WTO rules.

And tell me again - why did Amy Goodman get a $150,000 grant from the Ford Foundation in 2004, the same year the ACLU turned down Ford funding because of their "anti-terrorism" restrictions?
