Scenes from St. Paul -- Democracy Now's Amy Goodman arrested

Scores of people are tear-gassed. At least 250 people are arrested. And St. Paul is as militarized a scene as one will see in an American city.

The letters thread is now closed.

01 May 2007. Los Angeles, California.

Thousands of people. Dispersing. Assaulted by police.

Oh well....

Gordon

He is back into the substance of the campaign, however, so I am appeased. Still not sure why he backs Obama exactly. We may never know.

It was more of a wistful desire ayway, as I said. The 'need' was in order to resolve that weird debate with Mona, which to my mind is not terribly urgent.

@LWM

Sorry, I was working from what I read of your comments, which included, for example, your mocking someone who got too close to a police horse. I missed your comment to Kitt, with which I agree wholeheartedly.

If you want an example related to protests (rather than, you know, NYC weddings and black people reaching for their wallets and such), I suggest that you google the police tactics used by Chief Ramsey in one of the WTO or G8 demonstrations several years back (I don't recall when, unfortunately). The police roped off a park in downtown that contained protesters, then declared it closed, then arrested everyone within. All within scant minutes.

If you know DC, you know the parks are used by pedestrians all the time. Most of the people caught were going to work. They were easy to identify, but weren't let out, but instead were arrested. I call it deliberate, and so did every single observer and commentator in the media.

So, what do you think of that? I honestly find it hard to believe you never heard of it, and if you haven't, well ... maybe you need to pay more attention to exactly that kind of event. You know, just to keep your positions fresh and up to date.

@LWM

As a matter of fact, I used to be a landscaper. You dig holes all day and move big trees around and you get strong. I bet the vast majority of landscape workers could kick your cheetoh encrusted ass -- right there in your mother's basement.

Or are you just a gardener and landscaper?

The point about Black Bloc

is that the public doesn't know, can't know, who the perps are and what their objective is. There are assertions, that's all.

Here's a video from Denver that includes a whole lot of Black Bloc elements. There's no violence or vandalism, except from the cops when they start the round ups and arrests. Even that is pretty lightweight in this video.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l0bNx_lNAfs

Toward the end, two "Black Bloc" fellows are surrounded and being taunted by members of the crowd. They've apparently been outed. "No cops, no KKK, no fascists, USA!" Who are they? I don't know. But the crowd apparently believes they are cops and provocateurs. Eventually the two wander off, to the continued taunting of the crowd.

The incident I recall on Market Street several years ago was somewhat more good natured, even humorous, because it was so obvious. And even the cops were making a joke about it. It isn't hatred to call them on their shit.

The idea that the Authorities don't do this is absurd and contradicted by too many threads of evidence to deny.

But oh well...

It doesn't acknowledge your existence either, Gordon.

New post up

Inexplicably, does not acknowledge:

MikeWINY's "need."

Or L.W.M.'s expertise.

Or the existence of Objective Reality.

Hm.

At least I got a few hat tips on the front page in the old days.

These days, not so much. We all get our 15 minutes. I was happy with 5.

@Plisko

If I try real hard, I can come up with some websites touting the constitution and case law that will PROVE Lincoln was a tyrant, his war of aggreassion was illegal and unconstitutional just like the income tax is illegal and unconstitutional and so is the Federal Reserve. I am familiar with all internet traditions.

@omooex

You're right. I said so. Why should the police engage in secret police tricks when they don't know how and they don't need to? I think the possibility is small, but that it exists.

Please address further queries to CargoCult, who suggested the idea in response to a comment of mine and to whom I was responding.

You're precious

I also sound like someone who learned about pigs in real life, not tv. I sound like someone who has been teargassed while protesting peacefully. I sound like someone who has had his civil rights grossly violated by the pigs on several occasions.

You on the other hand, sound like an apologist for authoritarian dickheads.

@Plisko

Case cites are usually accompanied by the year of the decision.

I wonder why the Constitution Society decided to edit that important bit of information out?

And before you go getting all moist and squishy down there, why not read the actual case law.

Start with John Bad Elk (that name should give you a clue how much dust is on that law book)

http://supreme.justia.com/us/177/529/case.html

That Constitution Society website I don't know much about but it wouldn't surprise me if it had some affiliation with the Constitution Party. I'm sure the Montana Freemen would just love it.

Glenn has a new post up.

@L.W.M.

You know what I sound like?

Someone who just read about a famous journalist covering the convention of the extremist Republican party and being arrested by the pigs for no apparent reason. Conspiracy to riot, my ass.
