Scenes from St. Paul -- Democracy Now's Amy Goodman arrested

Scores of people are tear-gassed. At least 250 people are arrested. And St. Paul is as militarized a scene as one will see in an American city.

The letters thread is now closed.

Don't ask such silly questions, Jebbie.

Are only Democratic governors required to turn over their control of the NG before receiving federal assistance in these emergencies? -- Jebbie

This is George W Bush and Richard B Cheney we're talking about. Politics is their all and only reason.

Posted here because of the claim there that the cameras on the traffic lights are not normally present; i.e., police and protester action has been recorded, and may be useful to the protesters if they need corroboration of their stories.

Please excuse

the lousy sentence structure in my post immediately preceeding this one.

Hopefully, the message will still come across regardless.

O/T Gustov and Double Standards

Perhaps I am missing something here.

I've spent the last two/three days dodging Hurricane Gustov, tornados, extremely heavy rainfall and flooding rivers and perhaps I missed where George W. Bush demanded that Louisiana Governor Jindal required that Jindal relinquish control of the Louisiana National Guard as a condition for federal level military assistance in Louisiana as a result of Hurricane Gustov.

Wern't we told that such a handover of control of the National Guard was a precondition for federal assistance (under the Stafford Act?) and that (then) Governor Blanco's refusal to relinquish such control was the cause of the delay in Federal Assistance reaching New Orleans?

Are only Democratic governors required to turn over their control of the NG before receiving federal assistance in these emergencies?

@glenn greenwald

[note -- this St. Paul stuff just makes me angry; but, if you are filing subpoenas, how about one to find out who is at the other end of these "domainsbyproxy" registrations? i give you the next conspiracy, uncovered by your's truly:]

Interesting. Anyone who believes that Palin was picked in spite of Rove is being deceived. I am sure Karl Rove himself picked Palin, and with the full knowledge of every controversy that has sprung up most importantly the family issues ("let's let those Democrat vultures pick the WaterBreak Gate thing to death just to show Republicans how petty and hypocritical they are").

Remember, Rove is first and foremost a psychologist who understands that people do not vote for rational reasons. Drum up sympathy for this VP choice (who, mere minutes after she was announced it seems already had several parody websites up including http://vpilf.com/).

Now who here finds this strange? Look at the registration date:

By the way, the registrar is the same as some of the supposedly RNC backed PUMA sites:

This is a RNC inspired dupe. Sarah Palin is their ace of spades and they will be beating us over the head about how shockingly crass we were when she was announced to drum up sympathy from men who want to protect women, from women who have endured similar public humiliations. Both are groups that may be independant but might logically vote for the platform that is more friendly to woman's issues (the Democratic party). Karl Rove is appealing to their illogical, irrational brain, their "mirror neurons" as it were. He is turning the traditional Democratic advantage of empathy on its ear.

Unless this can be countered, quickly, then this election has a very bleak outcome indeed.

I don't honestly don't recall anyone making this argument, L.W.M..

but in this case they are mistaken if they think that the small group of clowns (I'm hesitant to call them anarchists) who engaged in certain acts with the intent of evokinge a massive police response are some kind of heroes. They aren't even victims. They are perpetrators. The innocents who got caught up in their shit are the real victims. -- L.W.M.

Honestly, I haven't seen or read any comments here actually defending the behavior of those vandals. Whether they acted with the affirmative intent of provoking the police is equally debateable; we just had the West Indian Day Parade here in New York, which can be riotous all on its own yet doesn't provoke the sorts of overreaction seen in St. Paul.

Perhaps I'm comparing apples to pears, but I find it hard to believe the St. Paul PD were prompted to behave as they have expressly because of a few (reportedly) isolated incidents.

Has anyone constructed a timeline of events/altercations thus far? That might be helpful to see who provoked what and when.

@Kitt

Apparently either she or the headline writer has a flare for the dramatic. Maybe they were just 'keeping it light' too. I just read a whole picture essay with captions by Linsay Beyrer...something. Her captions for her pictures of riot cops and so called protesters were quite entertaining. People just want to have fun. Even in these crappy circumstances. Maybe especially so.

I respect these people: Lindsay Beyerstein, Paul Rosenberg, Matt Stoller, Glenn and Jane, as respectful as I ever get, but in this case they are mistaken if they think that the small group of clowns (I'm hesitant to call them anarchists) who engaged in certain acts with the intent of evokinge a massive police response are some kind of heroes. They aren't even victims. They are perpetrators. The innocents who got caught up in their shit are the real victims.
