Scenes from St. Paul -- Democracy Now's Amy Goodman arrested Scores of people are tear-gassed. At least 250 people are arrested. And St. Paul is as militarized a scene as one will see in an American city.

  • As Bill Moyers said...

... "the delusional is no longer marginal."

"First they came for the journalists (there weren't very many) but I didn't speak up because I wasn't a journalist."

I hate to put a positive spin on a horrifying episode, but perhaps this will cause the MSM to take notice, thinking their power is under assault.

  • Amy Goodman

Has faced off with bigger thugs than these assholes.

What was she physically doing at the time, Glenn? Do you know? Were you there?

  • tears streaming down my cheeks ...

    Indeed, Let her go!

  • an important note

    Glenn,

I heard one of those fellows say that everyone arrested had committed criminal acts. When did the police replace the courts as the determiner of guilt?

  • Thanks for being there, Glenn

Thank you for speaking up at the press conference. I find it beyond belief that Amy would have been participating in a "riot". Her manner in all her broadcasts is so reserved that such behavior would be completely out of character.

Indymedia has posted a truly disturbing video of a woman repeatedly being pepper sprayed at close range. Her crime: standing in front of the advancing line of police officers while holding out a flower to them. Reminescent of the the Tiananamen Square tank video to me. Linked to my name.

Stay safe (and don't inhale, at least, not at the wrong time).

  • These asshole cops need to be taser

    Or worse.

  • The Major News Outlets on the web have been lauding the peaceful protests ...

despite the IndyMedia reports of teargas and rubber bullets since before noon ... no mention that I have seen of successful blockades and window breaking by "protestors"

nothing to see here ... the system worked ... move along ... ain't that america

    Stay safe.

  • thank you

Thanks Glenn for being there. The corporate media has very little on this. CNN just reported a largely peaceful demnostration (10k or so) with a few peeling off to cause some havoc. Somehow I doubt Amy was one of those...

  • What Bamage said

    Amy is one tough cookie.

Mayber her arrest will finally get the MSM off their collective asses.

Although I'm not holding my breath.

  • Now

we get to the part where the split is not between young and old, or even left and right. All the "muscle" used today is, more than likely, posessed by young men 25-40.

Now the State is engaged in finding out which of its young men (and a few young women, too) are willing to attack their fellow-citizens for a paycheck.

The meta-mission is for somebody among the victims to get killed, so the police or hired goons who did it can get off without consequences. This must be done as soon as possible so the rest of the police (and etc.) know where they stand- above the law.

Here we go. Every man for himself, and God against all.

  • Youtube Video of Amy's arrest...

Clearly, Amy was wild in the streets here:

  • More militarized than Denver last week?

Can we get figures to go with that? Numbers of troops, police, conventiongoers, etc?

Thank you so much for pushing this story, Glenn -- it's finally getting traction at DailyKos, but I feel as though a lot of the progressive blogosphere has lost their minds the past few days.

  • Democracy Now requests help

They are requesting calls go to Mayor's office in St. Paul.

Phone: 651.266.8535 --this is number for Mayor Chris Coleman's PR person.

They are also asking people call for Senator Klobuchar's assistance. Dept. Chief of Staff for Sen. Klobuchar

    andrea_mokros@klobuchar.senate.gov

Demand immediate release of Goodman and her two DN colleagues. It's rumored that one was last seen bleeding from nose. Ask Senator Klobuchar what the hell is going on. Raise some noise.

    GG--hope you are well.

  • Pepper Spray

Indymedia has posted a truly disturbing video of a woman repeatedly being pepper sprayed at close range.

Reminds me of the Humboldt County PD's treatment of anti-logging protesters in 1997. The protesters were chained together in a government office. The officers not only sprayed pepper spray directly into their faces (though guidelines said not to spray within two feet of "target" or when suspect is restrained), they soaked cotton swabs in pepper spray and rubbed the swabs directly in their eyes.

  • Thank you, thank you, Glenn, for staying atop this and . . .

for the risk you run to bring us the facts and the truth. How I wish people cared more about this than they do Bristol Palin's pregnancy.

Maybe some people really do get the government which they deserve.

Could you please enlighten us a bit more on this charge of "conspiracy to commit riot?" If they have no evidence that these actions did not come under the constitutionl protections of the First Amendment, can the police in St. Paul be sued?

  • Chris Matthews having his lunch at a sidewalk cafe in one of the Uptake videos today queries

    "Are we in a riot?"

Clearly there is yet another Media Narrative in operation here, and in this case it is that "Nothing Unusual Is Going On, protesters are demonstrating peacefully, no one is getting clubbed or gassed, there is no disturbance, continue shopping. That is all."

And please note: the "Progressive" Mayor of St. Paul, and we assume the equally "Progressive" Mayor of Minneapolis, is backing up the police actions all the way.

    Keep that in mind.

Do they not know what's going on? Or do they know and approve?

  • Oh Knock It Off, Glenn.

Don't pander, man, dig deeper next time. Look, I live in Lowertown St. Paul, where an offshoot of the protest started messing stuff up. I'm a proud, proud Democrat, ready to fight for Obama and volunteer, and have zero love for the GOP, and I wish I could get out of town. That said, here's what this group of protesters did: They dragged garbage containers (stone and plastic) into the street, tossed over newspaper dispensers, threw paint, threw road tacks, smashed windows, smashed cop cars, broke pieces of sidewalk, and overturned dumpsters, and bum-rushed cops, all in downtown St. Paul. There were roughly 4-500 of them by my estimation. The cops were absolutely restrained - to me, it seemed like their policy was that unless someone started a fire or assaulted anyone, they wouldn't arrest. There was a chunk of the giant protest that deliberately set off separately to raise hell, and they were more than tolerated. I don't know if Amy was part of this group or not, but the cops (Feds, officers from other cities in the metro area, and Ramsey County's finest) were absolutely tolerant, professional, restrained and even accommodating with this bunch. I followed this group from lowertown over to Rice Park and back again, so I know what happened. You want photos? Here: http://gallery.me.com/dboen#100035. That's what happened.
