MoCrash: Just imagine how many people we could imprison if we start arresting people who we assume may someday commit a crime. And who would be the lead investigator, Nostradamus?

    See: Minority report

  • Reality check.

First Amendment: "Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances."

If this is allowed, the worst case scenario for the Republican party will come to pass - a scene of thousands of people peacefully protesting in the streets, blocking traffic, and making it impossible for the convention to continue.

As the protests against the WTO in Seattle in 1999 showed, images of stormtroopers in riot gear attacking seated peaceful demonstrators don't play well with the public: (linked)

In order to do that, you need some kind of justification. See for example, how the Burmese military does it:

Regardless, Gustav is currently digging into the warm current in the Gulf of Mexico, and heading straight for Louisiana, to make landfall as a cat 4 or 5 hurricane, according to current estimates. Nature will likely be interfering with everyone's political scheming, in other words. Not for the last time, either.

  • Elly-panties

-In fact, a SWAT team armed with Remington 870's and Model 700 sniper rifles (pump-action and bolt-action, respectively) would probably scare the bejeezus out of Glenn and his pals every bit as much as any weapons with semi-auto operation. But it just sounds so butch when you can say, "semi-automatic" doesn't it?-

Clearly guns give you an irrepressible boner. I am guessing those multiple images of Sarah with an AK are serious masturbation fodder for the likes of you.

  • @maryjane (and others) comment on other sites

Maryjane, that's a good idea to comment on some of the other sites that are suffering from a major case of idiocy, here's some of the local papers whose comment pages I've been appalled by (of course there are some good reasonable comments on these pages as well) but they could all use a boost from some of the Salon readership. Here's some links:

You'll have to cut and paste these, note the second link doesn't all fit on one line.

  • This is why the FISA Bill Obama and Nancy Pelosi okayed can't be ignored.

WAS the RNC/Bush/McCain campaign wiretapping these kids?

Why would the Police/Sheriff Office harass the homes of these protestors, prior to any "protest" without being told by the GOP to do so? The Republican Party is responsible for this harassment. I mean, ARE we to believe that police/sheriff office "peace officers" were reading or listen in on the chat rooms of "Food not War"? Who tip off the police/sheriff personnel to go and harass protestors?

The Republican Party tip them off, that's who told these law officers to do this deed, along with judge(s) who complacently issue warrants for what exactly I wonder? Did the judge(s) issue a warrant for "conspiracy to commit riot" on the Food no War group without expecting these bust not to turn into a constitutional issue? I mean WTF is going on here?

It shows how Sen. Chuck Schumer has been involved in aiding the Republican Party by making sure he got another Gonzales like AG for Bush with Schumer's pick of Michael Mukasey and tell Americans that the US Constitution doesn't poll well - that's bullshit - Schumer is helping this damn Administration. I suggest Glenn use his ActBlue and Moneybomb funds for Sen. Schumer ASAP because that guy isn't the friend of Democrats.

And like I said before, the Republicans, the Bush Administration are not simply wiretapping terrorist alone, they are wiretapping protestors - Bush is running his wiretapping operation just like he ran the DoJ, with extreme prejudiced and calculated hatred. The Bush administration has done so many acts of bad faith with all the very real evidence we already have of how state attorneys got fired for failure to pursue bogus lawsuits? After Bush tried to prosecuted Democratic officials for bogus crimes certainly we can see how harassment of protestors would merely be a skip in the park. Karl Rove and this administration were very serious with their liberal hate factor. SO WE NEED TO GET IMPEACHMENT BACK ON THE TABLE BEFORE we end up having another Kent State like episode, as we're getting awfully damn close to the same kind of situation right now.

Barack Obama, having giving his okay for Bush to wiretap, without the slightest interest in looking at evidence of what precisely this administration has actually doing, and with Obama being a Constitutional lawyer and all - its reason enough NOT to vote for Obama. Yes, yes, I know McCain is worse, but Obama doesn't care enough about democracy to be a US President and picking between two men that care nothing for US Constitutions isn't a good reason to vote for either one them.

  • Revoked Permit: re-issued?

In the spring, the St. Paul Parks Dept conducted lotteries for the spaces they were willing to issue permits for.

"Swift Students for Truthiness," represented by Polk County WI Supervisor Ben Plunkett, won, securing a permit for Hamm's Plaza for Wednesday and Thursday. I was to co-ordinted a "STOP GOVERNMENT SPYING" event 4-8 Thursday, under his auspices.

These were revoked 2 weeks ago, for unspecified "security" reasons. When we sued, the Parks Dept. stipulated that we could still use the space, but now with a limit of 24 people at a time. Meanwhile we're also offered Ecolab Plaza, 2 blocks farther from the Convention, for overflow.

  • Raid on the 4th Amendment, 1st, etc.

Unfortunately, I am not at all surprised by the behavior of the thugs in "control" of policing MSP with terrorism and fear as a lead up to the RNC convention.

Like others have posted, illegal police activity is nothing new of course and it is always shocking when one experiences it firsthand. (I have had police kick down my door with no warrant in the '80's for no reason except that I had a neighbor who called them complaining about my music volume - even though I did not even own a stereo. I have been beat up by police in my front yard for no reason other than someone yelling as the cops drove by that I was a fag and my friends were too in a very southern town where this was not tolerated).

However, to witness stories of military swat teams terrorizing your average anti war college crowd to avoid a potentially minor embarrassing demonstration that none of the msm would ever cover anyways is absolutely ludicrous. What is even more outlandish are the attempts to justify this Gestapo like behavior that is certain to follow from the msm, RNC, and the MSP police department, etc. In case no one noticed, all of these people could have been easily killed! Next time this type of thing happens the victims may not be so “lucky”.

Glen, thanks for the great reporting and keep up the great work. The biggest weapon the police state has is the darkness that they operate in. Every ray of light that shines on them will truly make them weaker. It is a constant battle, that seems unwinnable at times, but I am positive that they will crumble under their own weight of darkness.

This MSP raid is more evidence of the ever deepening battle for the survival of a free and just society. I am afraid that the FISA bill on top of nearly 8 years of lawlessness has only emboldened these fascist thugs and I am ashamed of all Republicans and Democrats who voted for this fascist law. Don't underestimate how damaging this new law is; as I assume it is already providing real cover for the USA fascists in power and for those seeking it.

To all of the patriots here, keep shining the light where it is darkest. Bravo, you are all doing a great job!
