The decay of serious journalism and Rachel Maddow's new show

The New Republic -- of all places -- laments the loss of "nuance or intellectual rigor" on television as epitomized by MSNBC's troubling decision to give an actual liberal her own show.

The letters thread is now closed.

Glenn's question did not address his statement. The senator seems to think that the Democratic Congress is using "aggressive oversight" because of a Republican Administration. My question is simply to provide an example of such oversight. Glenn asks if the senator thinks the republican congress had any meaningful oversight. Not nearly the question that should have been asked.

You're putting words into Grassley's mouth that he didn't actually say and then demanding to know why I didn't challenge them. He didn't say that there has been "aggressive oversight" of Bush under the Democratic Congress. He said there has been more oversight lately -- which is true, since at least Democrats hold hearings, even though they never go anywhere, and he wondered if it would be "as aggressive" under a Democratic President.

In my view, far more warranting of criticism was his worry that Democrats would fail to exercise oversight of a Democratic President without bothering to mention that under the GOP Congress, there was virtually no oversight of Bush. So, as Kitt said, it was that point I pressed with him, and -- to his credit -- he basically agreed with it.

Deep thought (with apologies to Atrios)

Sacha Zimmmerman's implicit 'argument' here is that liberalism is incompatible with "nuance" and "intellectual rigor".

If we have a liberal, they can't be "intellectually rigorous" as well....

DFHs, all ... if not Conspiracy Theorists....

Cheers,

If it helps, I've read that age brings loss of cognitive function that is not necessarily due to 'Alzheimers' and is considered a normal part of the aging process. So, its perfectly fine to call McCain a doddering old fart.

I meant...

Edit: Both the Democratic and the Republican congress.

"... People who "reminds them of the whiz kids they've dealt with at work during the latest downsizing."

Could be my olfactory sense calibration has been knocked out of whack as badly as my irony meter, but I detect a faint whiff of a complaint about affirmative action and EEO in that sentence. Could be my tactile responses are overcharged as well (read as: thin skinned). Digby may have over trained me to the DOG** whistles being sounded around and about various media outlets these days. Maybe my auditory reception has been distorted, as well. I think that renders me senseless going into this election. Good thing my choices were made quite awhile back while I still had them.

** Hint, hint, Glenn. Still trying to guess the breeds. You can still comment in the previous thread, you know. Okay. Okay. I'm being just awful. Couldn't resist. I'll stop.

McCain is a dodering old fart who -- to me most importantly -- does not know his limits (or mind his handlers, if he has them) ...

That's what I find scary ... Reagan had the damnable grace to be able to laugh at himself convincingly and he appeared to know his (considerable) limitations, and he had the strong visage of Nancy always within his eyeline ...

McCain makes the same "gaffes" over and over ... and they aren't "gaffes" they are ERRORS, repeating ERRONEOUS INFORMATION as fact ... not good ... not good at all.

Combine that with his "legendary" temper that we have never seen ... very scary.

Nick

You are correct that the 'DFHs' didn't do any of those odious things you mentioned several pages ago.

However, if you read Mr. Perlstein's excellent book 'Nixonland' you will see that some dedicated but very naive young people failed to understand the propaganda ramifications of some stunts they did in those times.

Evil POS's like Roger Ailes & his ilk were able to selectively twist certain incidents to the point where they really hurt the Democratic party.

I urge you to read the book, but I warn you for a liberal it is not a pleasant read.

That was an excellent rant, BTW.

You're like a drug dealer at the playground luring me to talk about this. 3 out of the 4 are just mutts found from shelters or the street. Only 1 is a "pure breed" who was purchased, and he's just an ordinary lab. When I say "2 are American and 2 Brazilians," I'm just referring to where they were born and adopted, not their exotic breed (Border Collies and Australian Shepards are both awesome).

@ Glenn

And this article finds a way to get even worse... Please Glenn, for the sake of your non-liberal audience, stay far far away from the left-right false dichotomy.

Thursday, August 21, 2008 10:14 AM

I shouldn't do this, but...

Glenn, how'd you get them to Brazil? Does Brazil not have the draconian quarantine rules I thought were pretty standard?

I more or less declined a position in (at the time) W. Germany because my Golden would've had to endure something on the order of 6 months quarantine.

McCain isn't scarier to me than any other Republican who would be running. I think Republicans in the 21st century tend to be more functionaries of their party, than leaders of it. W's ascent to power seems more like a Jack in the Beanstalk story, as he was basically recruited for his charm and the fact that he was born without a soul.

The big brains, like Nixon and Bush 1 (and when you really think of it, their public personality had more in tune with Dukakis than with Reagan) have permanently retired leaving the game to be fronted by shucking and jiving ambitious but intellectually average 'real men' types.

TNR

The TNR argument proves that certain people can't see past the end of their noses. Noses that are often up the ass of a good Democrat, say Joe Lieberman.

I will say that it takes balls to be this myopically stupid.

couple thoughts

Nick you are right on man. The reason the 60's was the most turbulent period in recent history. Is because for the first time large number of Americans got involved in the political process. This was a direct threat to the power of the "establishment", and it needed to be put down hard. Which it was. The assassinations of Black panthers, the infiltrations of peace groups etc. The whole COINTELPRO thing. Which we see being revived right now. All the undercover police officers infiltrating anti-war and peace groups. Most Americans don't even know what COINTELPRO was. Those that don't know their history are doomed to repeat it.

@Maturity, I don't believe you were ever a democrat. But if watching Fox Noise channel turned you into John McCain republican, demonstrates the power of propaganda. You've been brainwashed, enjoy 4 more years of the same if McCain gets elected.
