Additional key facts re: the anthrax investigation

The media's key witness as to the psychological state of Bruce Ivins -- Jean Carol Duley -- has a lengthy history that undermines her credibility.

The letters thread is now closed.

Because he was obssessed w/Sorority?!

The latest is that Bruce Ivins was obssessed with Princeton University sorority. That explains why he mailed it from box on college campus?

Evidence Questions

After reviewing the order of protection application, I still can't find the request to involuntarily commit. Has anyone produced it? Who wrote it? Which healthcare providers, if any, provided specific diagnoses and supporting clinical evidence?

Who discovered Ivins after his apparent OD? How did he acquire the lethal amount of medication? Who prescribed it? For what reason?

As far as I can tell, the question still in play is who benefits by Ivins' death?

The process by which involuntary commitment to a psychiatric facility varies somewhat by state and local jurisdiction, but in most places it is predicated on a healthcare provider's medical diagnoses, and a social worker's opinion would not ordinarily stand alone. Since this particular "social worker" may or may not be licensed as an independent social worker (LISW) (and evidence points towards NOT), I am guestimating that a psychiatrist's or other physician's diagnosis and signature was necessary in order for the involuntary commitment order to be accepted and served.

That would be helpful information.

Just as the public is routinely misinformed about nurses and who they are (hospital staff of all stripes and types are referred to as "nurses" when only people licensed as registered nurses are indeed the legitimate practitioners of that profession), so are people practicing as social work assistants lumped with masters and doctorally prepared licensed independent social workers or the even more generic term, "therapists." They are not one and the same, and except for the LISWs, they are not licensed, independent or professionals by credential and practice.

Not to harp, but the media's poor performance when it comes to accurate health reportage impacts the public's ability to become and stay informed. And this can have consequences on an enormous scale.

Have those commenters who are blasting Glenn . . .

read Duley's handwritten complaint? http://www.thesmokinggun.com/archive/years/2008/0801081anthrax1.html

If that doesn't create questions regarding her credibility I don't know what would.

But this is all hypothetical...

Of course with the death of Ivins the actual "trial" will be an FBI press conference, with a slew of conspiracy books to follow.

voodooz

-If I had one wish, I'd like to see you on Keith Olbermann's show a couple of times letting people really know ... you know, the FACTS. Refreshing!-

Rachel Maddow has interviewed Glenn a few times, I believe.

She will likely guest-host again and there is chatter about her with her own show at MSNBC in the future.

If Keith doesn't, I expect you'll see Glenn interviewed on the box by Rachel eventually.

What'd I miss?

Just for the Record, Your Honor, I had serial, transient, obsessions w/ a few Kappas in my day.

And I didn't do it!

the sweet smell of corruption

Bruce Ivins played in the church band and worked for the Red Cross and had no criminal record until Dick Cheney fabricated one for him. Duley is, as they say, 'known to the police' and probably was coerced into making these statements by the threat of arrest and prosecution. A nurse who had looked after people who tried to kill themselves with Tylenol has said that it's almost impossible to do, even with the one that has codeine added. It makes people vomit and expels the drug from their bodies. A super scientist like Ivins would have known that. He 'suicided' shortly after he was escorted from Fort Detrick by the FBI. The greatest irony here is that the anthrax didn't come from Fort Detrick it came from the Dugway Proving Ground in Utah: a fact that has been known for some time. Why then has the FBI centred its investigations around the wrong facility and the wrong people? The army biological and chemical warfare facility in Utah had been developing a virulent, weapons-grade anthrax since 1992, while denying such research to the media. The Utah spores from the Dugway Proving Ground, 80 miles from Salt Lake City, were of the Ames strain. The Ames strain of weapons-grade anthrax was the one in the letters sent to the senators and no nation outside of the U.S. is known to have produced the Ames strain of anthrax. Bruce Ivins was obviously innocent and Barack Obama may just be trying to calm the citizenry when he says he wouldn't impeach these creeps in his first term. Yes, just wait until they die of old age, that's so much SAFER.

They are going to put a dead man on trial?

It will be a criminal trial. Something about anthrax murder. And it doesn't matter if she's not the defendant. Rule 609.

I know alot of idiots get thru law school, but you are don't want to join that club, do you?

Furthermore, I was referring only to her claim that she was threatened by Ivins, not her expert evaluation of Ivin's mental health. For that proposition, I presume they'll be getting the calm, sober, and undoubtedly silver-haired Dr. Irwin to testify. I am talking about a very specific assertion of lack of credibility and the use of irrelevant criminal records to back it up. It's a pretty disturbing journalistic technique and well-accepted, but not illegal.

It is so common to the human condition they even have a Commandment prohibiting it. The Ninth Commandment. If you've ever been on jury, even mock trials at law school, you know jurors are always sizing up testimony of witnesses. They are even given intructions to that effect.

For the record, and whether he did it or not, I'm sure Ivins is getting unfairly tarred himself. I really don't have a dog in this one.

-- Attorney, eh

I agree, and I don't have a dog in this race either, but Duley has become fair game because she's involved in this matter, has become a quasi-public figure getting her 15 minutes, and then some and all that info is a matter of public record. As I said, I was a bit uncomfortable reading Glenn's stripping the bark off her. I think he could have held back a bit but these are legitimate questions and concerns.
