Additional key facts re: the anthrax investigation

The media's key witness as to the psychological state of Bruce Ivins -- Jean Carol Duley -- has a lengthy history that undermines her credibility.

TPMMUCKRAKER HAS A GUY NAMED TOM BEAN....

TPMmuckraker posted something this morning on this subject. They have a new guy posting over there as a commenter who styles himself as Tom Bean. If what he says has any credibility, the FBI has its own reasons for not wanting a public airing of this matter. But I have no idea if what he claims is credible or not, but if so, it appears that the FBI was involved in covering up a weapons program, most likely one that's not authorized.

But I have no idea if he's credible, but check it out.

More on NPR reporting

This Monday AM on the NPR program Here and Now:

"Anthrax Scientist

Genetic tests helped federal investigators build their case against alleged anthrax mailer Bruce E. Ivins. Ivins, a senior government microbiologist died last Tuesday in an apparent suicide, even as federal prosecutors prepared to charge him with murder by anthrax. We'll speak with David Willman, staff writer at the LA Times and Dr. Paul S. Appelbaum, Professor of Psychiatry, Medicine and Law at Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons."

The reporter brings up the possible motivation for Ivins having been the Anthrax Killer because he would have personally benefitted from an anthrax vaccine he developed being used successfully in the aftermath.

Then there is a discussion about the ethics of a therapist releasing information about her patient. Nothing about the therapist's recent legal background.

I almost don't want to know how all this actually went down, it feels like the proberbial tip of the iceberg and I'm not sure we can all take the truth of this situation. But honestly, I'm glad that Glenn is taking this on, hopefully some other journalists will catch on and pitch in to opening the story up even wider.

Backing off on my Dugway accusations

As I commented last night, I have now read information that makes me much less sure the attack material was produced in a sophisticated facility. I have put the information in a post on Achieving Our Country that can be reached by clicking my name.

There are credible reports that the spores in the attacks were not treated in any significant way to "weaponize" them. That means to me that they could have been produced by virtually any microbiologist.

That the attack material has been linked by DNA sequence analysis to material under Ivins' control only requires the perpetrator to have gotten even a few cells of Ivins' material as a starter culture. As for the reports that the water isotope ratio is traceable to the northeastern US, I provide a link where anyone, anywhere can purchase sterile filtered water from Bethesda, MD suitable for use in microbial culture.

I still have many lingering questions on just how the attack material can be linked conclusively to Ivins and what his motive for the second attack targeting Senators Daschle and Leahy can be determined.

Suspect in bus beheading described as hard working

From the Associated Press:

Grant Memorial Church Pastor Tom Castor, who helped hire Vince Weiguang Li soon after he immigrated in 2004, said the man never showed any sign of anger or emotional problems.

"He seemed like a person who was happy to have a job, was committed to doing it well and didn't stand out in any way (in terms of) having anger issues or having any other issues," Castor said Sunday.

@Jim White

There are credible reports that the spores in the attacks were not treated in any significant way to "weaponize" them. That means to me that they could have been produced by virtually any microbiologist.

Given the number of letters and how many postal workers handled them, the fact that there were only 5 deaths would seem to bear this out.

I wish you had bolded this or put it in all caps

None of this is to defend Ivins, nor is to suggest that this constitutes evidence that Duley is lying or is otherwise inaccurate in her claims. As I said, it's perfectly possible that Ivins is guilty of being the anthrax attacker. I have no opinion on whether he is. The point is that nobody should have any opinion on that question -- one way or the other -- until they see the FBI's evidence.

To those complaining about Glenn's posting Duley's record, it is all public record. That's the point. You should be complaining to the media - whose job it is to dig for this - that have failed you. Glenn did what any attorney would do in his argument, it may appear a bit heavy-handed but that's the way the cookie crumbles. The media, your MSM should be doing this. They are not. Kudos to Glenn. 1000 people digging are much more effective than 10,000 sitting on line speculating about conspiracies and cover-ups. The fact that people are digging and looking is what will break this wide open. Conspiracy theorizing won't. I'll break character here and suggest that there has been so much dis, mis and conflicting information about this case that it has all the hallmarks of an intentional smokescreen. Having said that, it may just be a giant attempt to CYA a badly bungled investigation from the get-go and nothing more. But until there is a proper investigation to get to the bottom of it, to much conspiracism only allows people ridicule and marginalize you, and rightly so in most cases. Like perhaps because the WH told the FBI to blame it on al-Qaeda...

http://www.atlargely.com/2008/08/fbi-was-told-to.html

More than enough reason to want to CYA now.

If I had to write the script for this movie, and letting my imagination run wild, I could see where there was a possibility of a synchronicty. A coincidental confluence of unconnected events that appears to look like the GUCT to those disposed to such flights of fancy. The Grand Unified Conspiracy Theory. It involves some "lone nut," or even some rogue element in the Bush admin or in the intel community attempting a false flag op (unbeknownst to most and that just happened to coincide with a completely unexpected attack by al-Qaeda on 9/11. Something smells, but I wouldn't go looking for the Grand Unified Conspiracy Theory. It probably isn't there.
