Those privacy-hating Chinese communist tyrants

GOP senators protest China's surveillance of foreigners' e-mail and telephone communications. And they do it with a straight face.

Where

...do people like Sam Brownback come from? We can assume he and others like him are not aliens. Are they Russian moles, neo-fascists, corporate pawns, conspirators, foreign agents, or just sleeze-bags who are so deluded that they haven't the dignity to feel traitorous or the emotional health to feel shame?

Another enemy

In a corrupt society honesty is an act of rebellion.

Honesty and ignorance are disguised with formality and politeness and are equal threats to the maintenance of conformity.

Piss on Sam Brownback!

That slimy sonofabitch Senator Sam Brownback sheds crocodile tears about China's surveillance of foreigners' calls, yet he voted for telecom immunity and warrantless surveillance of innocent Americans.

Piss on him.

The Undeclared War

You know that if the phrase "liberal media" is used that what proceeds or follows it will be republican talking points or government/corporate propaganda.

Your next stop: The Twilight Zone

"This is not a new world; it is simply an extension of what began in the old one. It has patterned itself after every dictator who has ever planted the ripping imprint of a boot on the pages of history since the beginning of time. It has refinements, technological advancements, and a more sophisticated approach to the destruction of human freedom. But like every one of the super states that preceded it, it has one iron rule: logic is an enemy and truth is a menace."

"China spying on its people is bad; USA spying on its people is good."

Clear evidence that the US government thinks the people of China are harmless, but that the people of the US are dangerous…

Should all Americans consider themselves suspects?

The administration says it needs to spy on the American people to protect the country from its enemies. Who are its enemies? Look at who they're spying on.

In effect, the government is in an undeclared war against the American people. Not suspects. Enemies.

Fear or Patriotism

Apparently, government officials and corporate America agree that after Islamic extremism, the American people are the next greatest threat to their power and wealth. They probably perceive the quest for openness in government and honest analysis of their actions and motivations taking place on the internet a warning about an American "awakening" when citizens decide that they are fed up with taking it in the shorts so that a few million fat cats can live high on the hog. When hope of opportunity and the freedom to act independently are understood not to exist it transforms into the catalyst for the government's paranoia. The government would rather build a war machine capable of destroying patriotism and replacing it with fear than choose the option of being fair and respectful.

re: "Does real privacy exist in America?"

Only for those who can claim "Executive Privilege" -- or hide out in "an undisclosed location".

The rest of us are under the watchful eye of Big Brother.

P.S.

Not sure if anyone else has brought this up, but just in case you had any illusions about your complete lack of privacy...

Credit Card Transactions to be Reported to the IRS - in Foreclose Prevention Act of 2008

http://tinyurl.com/5nleqy

In the past, when IRS wanted to get information from banks and merchant accounts, it required going to a judge and getting a subpoena. With this new law in place, such pesky legal formalities have been dispensed with.

Now, what was it that someone was saying about us not living in a totalitarian state?

Nice Juxtapositioning!

Nice juxtaposition of news items. I'm sure Billmon (whomever and whereever he is) is proud.

re: "The DJIA was up 186 today, probably on the basis of all that excellent economic news, like the $4 jump in crude oil futures."

No, I think it was because, in spite of all the negativity from the liberal media, they can plainly see that everthing is just fine.

re: "you obviously have no idea what it's like to live in a totalitarian regime"

Yes, I do, since in fact I live in one. Indeed, I pointed out to you exactly why that is so. You offered no counter argument, because there is none.

Thus, your statement is demonstrably false.

A few questions

When exactly did the earth shattering change in human nature take place that we can now trust individuals within the government not to use collected data for corrupt purposes?

Has any of the collected data on Americans been sold to corporations for a profit?

Has any of the data been used to silence senators and representatives in Congress?

Has any of the data been used for blackmail or to target political opponents?

Has any of the data been used to spy on corporate or institutional investors to get a heads up on when to buy or sell stock?

Has any of the data been shared with entities outside of the government?

Since there are many corporations that would benefit from more complete demographic information have agreements arisen from this resource?

Is any of the data being used to gain knowledge of behaviors so that it can be used to manipulate the public?

Has data been collected on peace advocates, dissenters, and critics of the administration?

Is any of the data collected being used to undermine human rights, inherent rights, and civil liberties?

Is the data collected being used to strengthen corporate control over Americans?

How will knowledge about inheritences, medical records, personal relationships, opinions about co-workers, neighbors, and relatives be used?

Does real privacy exist in America?

Are "all" financial transactions scrutinized and for what purpose?

Should all Americans consider themselves suspects?

What is done with legal, but personal information collected?
