As long as some parts of the USA Constitution are standing, especially the First Amendment, there is a solution to the unchecked unbalanced: Publicity.
That is exactly why it is so necessary that Glenn Greenwald and others hammer thhis home every single day. Even the most hardened traditional media outlet has to acknowledge the elephant in the room at one point. And it happens, Greenwald and others are invited for discussions. There might be enough voters realising what has happened and will happen if they don't do anything.
It cold well be the two traditional parties sharing power are less afraid of personal responsibility but much more of independents gaining more and more support. True, the current majority voting system will block independents at least as long as they cannot unite. But voices asking for a change in the system, asking for proportional representation are getting louder and louder.
And then there's always the old Universal horror picture solution: Get out the dung forks and torches!*
*For the John Wayne fans: tar and feathers.
Dear Glenn,
considering that the duplicity of leading Democrats is the
key problem, and that the general public probably doesn't
know about the extent of this corruption, do you think it
would be a good idea to post full page ads, similar to the
ones you put together just before the July 9 FISA vote ?
By making such adds which are seen by many people, we
would start to undermine the approved story line of the
torture and spy loving democrats. Naming specific players
is important. Obviously I will contribute to such an add.
If the heart of the problem is that we have House & Senate
leadership helping to cover up criminal acts, isn't it time we named and shamed these people ? The democrats should
feel pressure from their constituents to throw out their
leadership.
Glenn is the most perceptive and articulate observer of our "democracy" that we have at the moment. His insight that we are struggling against a power elite, who have no regard for the rule of law, is obvious, but no one expresses it quite as well. Nothing will change unless we all chip away at the edifice and install true democrats in office. We are perilously close to slipping from oligarchy into fascism. Cheers, Glenn! Keep the faith!
Let's take an extreme example. Suppose someone raped your daughter, you found out, and you committed first degree (premeditated) murder in order to extract revenge.
Should you be arrested for first degree murder?
Charged? Tried? Convicted?
Indeed, I feel that the person should be convicted, and they should feel like their conviction is an acceptable price to pay for the power to murder their daughter's rapist. Someone who believed in the rule of law would be proud to serve that sentence, given their actions; otherwise, they shouldn't have committed the crime.
I wonder how many people agree with me.
It is only the good will of those in power that prevents any American from being persecuted. We'd liberate you, but you don't have enough oil to make it worth our while.
Or "Oh the tangled webs we weave when first we practice to deceive."
As Glenn has noted many times, there are as many different reasons for "cooperating" with this criminal administration as there are members of Congress who have learned to roll over and bark. But this is likely the most significant one.
So, now that they've rediscovered the value of horse-trading (a heaping helping of the 4th Amendment buried in exchange for budget considerations, as some "reasonable" souls were suggesting), I wonder if they were smart enough to get assurances that the administration wouldn't declare martial law before the elections too.
If their foresight matches their fortitude, then we're in bigger trouble than we thought.
It is apparent that the United States has become a country where the rule of law is bought by the highest bidder. It is a sad thing. What do I say to my teenage daughter when she asks me why she must follow the law but the president doesn't have to? It applies to some but not all?
Our once great country has fallen on bad times, brought low by greed. Wasn't it jesus, the great philosopher mentioned by our vaunted president, who once was claimed to have said "The love of money is the root of all evil"?
Justice for money. Lets us all honor our president, surely the worst office holder this country has ever seen. It is his character that this country has taken on. The united states has become GWBushit.
It is called the law. The real "too bad" is that the Washington Gang is unwilling to apply the law.
So, of course key Congressional Democrats who were made aware of these illegal torture and surveillance programs are going to protect the Bush administration and other lawbreakers. -- Glenn G.
You have described a criminal gang and a criminal conspiracy to cover up crimes. This is the sort of stuff Nixon was nailed on. Of course, if the "oversight" officials are in on the crime, what can be done?
[Mr. Tibby]: So... let's also go after anyone who sanctioned any war from the last 70 years.
Didn't read the post, didja? Because no one but you has suggested any such thing....
Cheers,
Many of believed all along that the Dems were holding Bush's coat as he kicked the crap out of the 4th amendment, shredded habeus corpus, and violated numerous national and international laws against torture.
Pelosi, Harmon and Rockefeller go to the head of the class of Dems to be dumped.
Anonymust will gladly bake you some chocolate chip cookies on Friday if you pay her on Tuesday.
Watching the politico's sneers and talk-blabber, SPEW, flowing out from both side of their mouth gives viewers indigestion.
Those sarcastic sneers can make any decent human shiver. The White House Gang deserve to
shake and shiver. FEAR. Yes, they try to postpone the inevitable. They try to wring new meanings from words.
What wasted scoundrels.
In my opinion, they are as nervous as a cat in a Oval Office full of a thousand and one damn rockers, Was the Rockefellers handwritten 'note' even legible? They shake like yellow jell-o.
I bet Dick Cheney had to send the letter back to Rockerfeller with a request to "Rocky".... I wager he petitioned with a bowk of peanuts and requested the jittery hand-scribble be written more clearly. Cheney breathes out of the corner of the sneer on his mouth? His eye brows are two slits of sheer evil hate. The White House appear to wish to slit a chicken's neck OFF for lunch to release the built up psychopathic illness. Blood gravy. What severe mental illness nut-cases we get to observe on a daily basis. It's a ring-side seat. I'll have to buy The Dark Side book. Maybe barter for a book about HYPOCRITES? su! me. shush. irritating? yes. I know it. okay.
Salon needs to pay Glenn more that $120.00 per year. You got them bloody war fellers gnashing their false teeth in the public arena. SHAME. But that's how Nature always works.... Keep bombarding them with honest critiques on a daily basis. The mockery is for their damn good, and it's necessary, ESSENTIAL, for all youthful hope... The truth will serve to be a BALM of HEALING that will be expressed later by those children etc., WHOM we cherish and love.
No joke. A four year old ask me?
You reading Glenn? She loves you.
However, she warns me not say:
Yea the `Stupid Greenwald blog!
(P.S. no get arrested in a real-estate bank exposing White House crimes)
Well, thanks or we'd `surly be entering madness, mad, mad, and insane times.
