The motivation for blocking investigations into Bush lawbreaking

Key congressional Democrats were aware and tacitly supportive of Bush's illegal interrogation and surveillance programs, a key motive in why they helped prevent accountability.

The letters thread is now closed.

@bernbart

You do this over and over, without a shred of evidence. You put down what YOU want, and assume that is what "the voters" want. You are such a poor thinker, and one of the worst concern trolls I've ever seen, that I think you either work for one of the DINO democrats, or you're what passes for a journalist somewhere, or perhaps one of their "researchers." Hopefully, you're not a teacher anywhere. Whatever you are, why don't you take time to learn basic principles before spouting off whatever overchewed conventional wisdom floats through your head. Of course, you're unlikely to do any of that, since you're unlikely to see how ineffective you really are.

<,Yes most Democrats think Cheney and Bush will go down, as they should, as the worst leaders in the history of this country. The majority do not wants to get embroiled in impeachments at this late date or in trials in 2009 in regard to Bush/Cheney illegal interrogations. Voters want some progress made in Congress not divisive politics.>>

Now that was a smack-down. No name calling or silly crap playing with the name/handle of the person. Just a statement of the facts.

Well done sir.

@ lemecdutex

I find your speculations about Obama's and Clinton's FISA votes intriguing. Those divergent votes, more than anything, convince me that Clinton is very unlikely to be Obama's VP choice. In fact, I would go so far as to say that they indicate that either she is certain that she won't be or that she doesn't really want the job.

What Clinton's vote would do is give her more flexibility on any such issues in the future. She doesn't owe Pelosi. The vote may signal that, should she get the opportunity, she may exact payback.

Of course, my speculations are just that and it is not possible (at this time) to know anything for sure.

@ bernbart

The congress goes on vacation August and you want to impeach Bush and blame Democrats for not holding him accountable. Get a grip.

Yes, because if there's one thing that the Dems learned from Bush it's that nothing is important enough to interrupt a perfectly good vacation for.

Voters want some progress made in Congress not divisive politics.

Learn to cite polls proving these kinds of assertions or stop misrepresenting your opinions as ours. Please.

Minus the spelling issues, I agree with the rest of what you wrote.

God Damn Pelosi, Reid and the Bush crowd. Despicable, traitorous worms.

Careful Douvie, your inner Rev. Wright is showing. ;-}

I guess you think "Concern Troll" is a statement of fact.

You can't be serious

The best thing that can happen is Obama will be elected. He will put forth a good AG nomination who respects the Constitution. Reform the intelligience community. Get rid of Homeland security and the TSA. Condemn and ban any future torture. Close Guatanimo.

And you claim you're just a volunteer/activist.

Seriously.

I've been doing some reading about depleted uranium munitions, cancer, and birth defects over the years and it seems parts of Iraq will be slow radioactive killing grounds for thousands of years due to our military's use of DU rounds.

So much for the summer novel, eh? If you're interested, Laura Westra has an excellent book called "Environmental Justice and the Rights of Unborn and Future Generations." It's right up your alley.

Cheers.

How Do We Fix It? - One Congressman at a time.

Both houses of Congress are like a badly neglected garden, overrun with weeds. We need to pull the weeds, keep the vegetables (they're good for you!) and add to the crop.

It takes a lot of hard work (I just started a backyard garden, so I know first-hand), but the results can be gratifying.

We need to recruit more weed pullers and find some good seeds!

Pedinska.

Oh. It was oysters or sardines? I've been wandering around, cloud watching today.

I see omens. The mood I'm in is very similar, but not as dismayed as Red Snapper.

You want to feel goofy (no read), go visit the New Yorker comments. O Pedinska?

Ask poor Richard if it's okay to move into your hut? I'll limber up a right thumb.

I'll fill a pillow case with candy kisses, limburger cheese, and stop at truck stops.

The truck stops in West Virginia give away hot dogs. You make 'um angry at four.

I'll boast I'm as poor as a mouse. No have a good solid foundation on a outhouse.

I'll be there soon. knock knock.O, open up.

I'll sing gospel hymns. No serve red snapper.

I'll battle fog, rain, hail, and eat frank furthers.

Ask Richard to make native cheesy sandwiches.

Jane Mayer

I logged onto the Jane Mayer live chat at WPost. There are only two or three questions asked and answered at this point. Get over there, people!

Your posts recently have kicked up a notch in both intensity and writing style. I'm wondering if you might contact your editors at Crown to see if they believe (as I do) that they could be issued, relatively unedited, as a book by the end of the year. Could Salon be amenable to this? I know you've got a lot on your plate, but this could play a constructive role in the year-end political follies coming up. At any rate, congratulations on the increasing coherency and impact of your work.

I don't know if I became "irate" but the fact is, my name is Kitt.

What earthly difference does that make?

And how was I supposed to know in the first place?

The fact of the matter is, you objected when someone played games with your name and then brag of doing the same with other people.

There is a word for that.

@akasmith

I think it does give her more flexibility, but I don't know what the flexibility would be for. For some reason, I just don't see her making another run for president. Like you, I don't think she's aiming for/or else doesn't expect the VP slot. Originally, I wanted her to be the VP, now I'm not so sure, mainly because I think so much less of Obama than I used to. Now I feel like a one-issue voter, the supreme court and the likelihood the next prez picks one or more, because I doubt I'll like a single other thing about an Obama presidency.
