Democrats' strategy: Strength through bowing

Yet again, Democrats, in their never-ending quest to avoid looking "weak," engage in the precise behavior that guarantees that perception

@ What Constitution?

"And how obvious is the risk that, in the midst of this, there will be a car bomb in Cleveland or some other place, and gee, martial law and the suspension of elections anyone?"

There are those who sneer at conspiracies, but they forget Caesar's assassins, the last 8 years of constant conspiracy by BushCorp (which in this context is more aptly titled CheneyCorp) and all the other secret plans that are constantly being devised by the Pentagon et all. It is funny because everyone will say they aren't surprised at all when Bush declares martial law and suspends the next Presidential election, but before the fact they'll call you nuts for daring to think such a thing will happen in the future.

@Jonathan

It may interest you to know that focusing on one thing doesn't prevent one from also paying attention to other important things - even acting on them.

almost no one in Govt is on the side of We, The People

i don't know if they ever were on our side, but they certainly aren't now, with the obvious and brave exceptions like Sens Feingold and Dodd (hang in there guys!).

Govt protects and serves the wealthy and powerful. we have no allies in govt with the power to reverse this.

I'm so sick of Glenn's board

What a bunch of whiny, crybabies. Used to be good honest analysis here. Now, just rending of garments and gnashing of teeth.

You sound like conservatives bitching that abortion is still legaal.

Tell you what, when I've got a full-time job again, when the dollar is worth more than the Euro again, when children aren't starving or going 5 years without seeing a doctor, when the country's bridges and roads are not literally falling down from lack of infrastructure investment, when my government stops torturing and starting wars, only then will I care about this crap.

Seriously, people. This can practically be taken care of with an executive order on January 21st. Unless, of course, McCain is president.

@ Kirk

"you're all still going to vote for him."

Your failed generalization shows both your ignorance and your bias. I bet it makes you feel good to think you know anything at all, but please give it up already, you're being bitter -and, unfortunately, bitter about all thew wrong things.

re: Space - the final frontier

none of this matters though

Back in the day Bush supporters would support him if cut the head off a baby on life national TV and had sex with the corpse. You Obama supporters are no different. Unless he shows up on the Senate floor with a bag of grenades and blows himself up, you're all still going to vote for him.

We know it doesnt matter to you. But that because you have a case of the space madness. Now go take your thorazine James T.

@N.O.B.

Glenn is suggesting that the dems are not acting on principle, but are acting in their self-interest. They lack integrity.

None of us three have any disagreement on this point. There may, indeed, be more things in heaven and earth, NotOrbitBoy, than are dreamt of in your philosophy.

The Executive has been trying to "write law" ever since Yoo put his first stubby pencil to paper on their behalf. Now that they've succeeded with regard to FISA, why wouldn't they then immediately apply that to whatever other crimes they have outstanding (cue Shooter's perennial whine about 'allegedness')? I mean, time's a-wastin' and there's only months left to raise the barriers and relabel the 'sins' (does that feel better than 'crimes' Shoot?).

If it works again, it would also relieve Bush of the burden of issuing some extremely unsightly pardons at the terminus of his Reign of Terrah.

(Thank you What Consitution? for posting the original link.)

Mukasey -- are the Democrats Getting This?

The chief law enforcement officer of the United States now goes before a committee of Congress and testifies that he refuses to allow charges to be brought against any officer or employee of the United States who engaged in torture, if that officer might have been following orders given by a superior ranking person also employed by the United States government?

What planet are we on?

Saying something like this in public should be grounds for immediate termination of employment, disbarment, criminal prosecution in its own right, and certainly the institution of impeachment proceedings against any President who refuses immediately to fire such a fascist pig. Of course, it's GWB's fascist pig, so the rules seem to differ.

The United States Constitution was not constructed to withstand an unopposed presumption that the King's ministers can do no wrong. Oh, wait, it wasn't even built to withstand an unopposed presumption that there's a king.

Look, let's be honest: all this "above the law" crap just got a huge boost from the Democratic cave on FISA. Mukasey tells Congress there will be no consequences for torture. Rove blows off a congressional subpoena. I'm not sure what else Cheney could say to top "I don't have to talk to Congress because I'm not part of the Executive Branch", but he's undoubtedly trying to think of something. Addington sneers to a congressional committee that he won't answer any question about the legality of administration actions because "I'm not here to give Congress legal advice, you have your own lawyers." Anyone see any chance this will abate or the pace of administration taunting of Congress will get less obnoxious between now and next January?

It's been open season on the Constitution for these bozos since Pelosi proclaimed that impeachment is off the table. It's now worse than that, as there have been obvious bounties placed by the administration on targeted Constitutional principles which are perceived as inconvenient to dictatorship. Every flagrant attack on a fundamental premise of constitutional democracy that can be flouted or abused, without significant Democratic opposition, is going to be flouted and abused between now and January, because the congressional inaction is going to be characterized as consent.

Would somebody please deal with this? And how obvious is the risk that, in the midst of this, there will be a car bomb in Cleveland or some other place, and gee, martial law and the suspension of elections anyone?

Act like a co-equal branch of government, please, Congress. Is that so much to ask? Isn't that our due?
