Beltway myth: "The left-wing base" vs. "the American people" on Iraq

Mara Liasson falsely claims that "the American people" only want to leave Iraq when "conditions on the ground" permit it.

Worth a mention regarding Obama's initial "promise" wrt troop withdrawal ... Iraq is due to hold national legislative

elections in 2009, regardless of who is president here in the u.s.a. -- and that providing security for those is likely to slow or completely stall any plans for troop withdrawal -- not based on "conditions on the ground".

In preparation for those elections a national census was approved (it was decided the provincial elections could not be postponed for the results) ... this census will also determine exactly the ethnic make up of the country, essential in any plan for oil revenue allocation based on same. (Readers may recall that the original Iraqi elections were postponed for 6 months because there was no available census, but were finally held, without such any census using food distribution data, as had been originally suggested in, irrc, June 2004 at the time of Bremer's exit, Allawi being appointed, etc. )

oh, and regardless that Americans probably almost all agree that Debaathification was a mistake and contributed greatly to civil unrest, debaathification has not been un-done hardly at all. Maliki's influence over his own constituency being insufficient to remove this festering thorn.

The wait is short, and time is running out!

As LT Bohica Monday, July 7, 2008 12:33 PM mentions, w/ phone numbers and everything - there's still time (and arguably, now IS the time) to call Harry Reid's office about the FISA travesty.

No pick GOPS nose? Get out of Iraq!

There are no legal grounds for staying is a bloody, dripping, war zone. Be honest. Everybody agrees that picking a fight or picking some GOPS nose is gross. Yoo should not do it anymore.

Rotten manner, or, O, O MATTER!

It's so very gross, and so unhealthy.

Heres why: A nose traps dust, and other bad stuff.

A good nose prevents yuck from getting to the lungs.

Yoo will damage the nose? To poke will make yoo sick.

Sticking a finger in the nose, and swirling a finger, is real gross.

No human nostril wants a bloody nose nostril with `a`yoo's finger.

Nose bleeds waste computer scroll-paper. Let the nose have mucus.

Slimy GOPS are gross.

Slimy noses are good.

Nose crusty gunk is a no.

Fingers try to pick it? no.

Re: re: right wing authoritarianism

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Right-wing_authoritarianism

"The "right wing" in right-wing authoritarianism does not refer to someone's politics but to personality.

The term, as used in this country, has connotations that indicates it only refers to political right-wingers and more specifically to the GOP. As used here in UT, it almost always refers to same. We have read threads that used RWA and GOP interchangeably for post after post. So, the dictionary version may support your position, but real-world usage is all that really counts my friend.

Now, it it true that your typical GOP crazy is statistically more apt to be a RWA than not, but it is also true that your left-wing crazy is just as apt to be one also. It is for this reason that I prefer to use the more cumbersome idea of followers of a personality cult since it is not loaded with the baggage that comes with RWA.

In fact, I think that damn few people in the USA can think on their own without using the source of a particular idea as evidence of it being right or wrong. I even find myself having trouble seeing the mistakes Glenn Greenwald makes. (if in fact he has ever made one!)

@ d.c. eric and rufus 11

From d.c. eric:

These assholes and their ancestors have been killing/wanting to kill each other for over a thousand years. The difference at this point is that our military people are standing in their way.

From rufus11:

i hear you. this conflict has waged for THOUSANDS of years, though. take that into account. The euro's don't go that deep. A hundred or hundreds, tops.

Talk about untruths that are constantly repeated. As someone who studies Middle Eastern history, I get really tired of this meme. First of all, peoples of the Middle East have never had any kind of monopoly on violence. If anything, compared to Christian Europe, the ME was model of ecumenical tolerance until the 20th century, during which time Europe was mostly a brutal place for Jews to live and an impossible place for Muslims to live.

As for “these assholes and their ancestors,” assuming this means Sunnis and Shi’ites, that conflict has, until very recently, only occasionally been violent – never has it even come close to the violence of the Christian Reformation. Despite some enduring and nasty theological debates, political alliances and generally peaceful co-habitation between Sunnis and Shi’ites were by far the norm for the last 1100 years or so. Nothing even close to the bloodshed of the last few years has ever occurred before. The same holds true for Muslim-Christian and pre-1948 Muslim-Jewish relations. I’m not saying there weren’t wars, we are talking about over a thousand years of civilization, but it has never been any bloodier than what Europeans have done to each other.

As for Rufus’ THOUSANDS of years… huh? Muhammad died in 632 and it took about 200 years for the Sunni/Shi’a split to germinate into distinct factions, leaving about 1150 years of occasional violence and frequent harmony. Or are you talking about Christians… I guess that’s 2,000 years. I suppose Jews have fighting with various people for about 5,000 years. What the hell is your point? Are you really saying that Europeans only have “a hundred or hundreds of years of history”? Wow… ever heard of Rome?
