While Obama's shift on FISA has all the hallmarks of the classic failed "move to the center", the sheer awkward lameness of this whole dodge suggests something besides political posturing for votes is going on.

Think of the muddled and uncharacteristic incoherence of his position (apparent in the felt need of his more imaginative partisans to concoct far-fetched and conflicting explanations of his behavior), his clumsy use of national security as an excuse for supporting the indefensible, i.e., telecom immunity, and, most revealing, his failure to follow up with a more convincing rationale when a firestorm of criticism ensues.

To understand what is happening, we need to look behind the positions and arguments to the many pressures evidently being brought to bear on a very talented, highly principled, but uniquely vulnerable nominee.

The need for party unity in a party famous for dissent and disorganization, the desire of a young upstart and relative outsider to show party elders he'll listen to their advice and take their interests to heart, the pleading of party members whose own reputations might be damaged by the telecom civil suits, and, not least, the generosity and threats of influential lobbyists whose support is still indispensable, to members of Congress if not Obama himself - I would suggest these imperatives are behind Obama’s otherwise puzzling and wholly unnecessary public support for HR6304, and not some blundering tactical veering to the Right.

I would argue this is in fact the precious metal interior of the threatening Cumulus of this whole episode. When asked by my government to provide information vital to the countries security I would do so unhesitatingly. To be subject to lawsuits based on fulfilling these requests, I would be stunned and saddened.

As a Patriot I would work my hardest to provide for my family. I would not expect the government to provide for my housing, health care or higher education. I will take care of those things because the government taxes my income to the least extent possible so I can provide for myself.

As a Patriot I will be proud if my children decide that they wish to join the armed forces to protect this country. If they are injured or killed I will grieve, but I will be strengthened that they gave themselves so others could enjoy the freedoms promised by our Constitution.

As a Patriot I will examine all issues on their merits and not just follow those who are charismatic. On scientific issues like global climate change I will seek out noted scientists on both sides and try to understand the issues causing differences in opinion.

As a Patriot I will try to be the best I can be.

We have lost so many of our civil liberties since Bush took office and we need to find out just what Bush did, how far were we violated as a people when they wire tapped our phones with out permission. Giving the telecommunication companies immunity will destroy our ability to ever know exactly what they did.
