Hoyer hails FISA bill as "a significant victory for the Democratic Party"

The House majority leader argues that giving the GOP what it wanted on eavesdropping removed it as an election issue. That's the same mentality that led Democrats to authorize the war in 2002.

meta and a metronome.

And a trophy for W.T.? No.

A metronome is a tinker tool that's can be put to some good use. It ticks with the time. It keeps timing. If a person or a beast yelps it ticks. Trophies can be awarded to whoever has the most neuroses. A innocent device such as a metronome can't hurt if it just 'ticks tick' ... And it ticks to a honest beat. It's honestly that will unite us all to accept human's frail oddities, and maybe the fellow-idiosyncratic behaviors, unique to human diversity? Innocent behavior, that is, no advance war and civil strife?

Looking at Senate schedule

and can't find a hearing on FISA. Maybe it's hidden, maybe I'm just not seeing it. The schedule jumps from Thursday, June 26, to Wednesday, July 9. Does anyone know yet when this is supposed to happen?

Pelosi

via mcjoan: http://blogs.wsj.com/washwire/2008/06/24/pelosi-says-more-debate-on-fisa-would-be-healthy/

“It would be healthy if (the public) heard more about it… even if the resolution is the same,” Pelosi said, when asked by reporters whether she thinks Senate Democrats, including Sen. Barack Obama, should filibuster the legislation updating the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act as it heads to the Senate floor this week.

I can't say anything about this, because if I did, Glenn would have to ban me.

I was hoping for nothing Glenn. It was the least they could not do.

You got to watch them Big Time Operators. Nothing but a bunch of heathens.

Hope (a girl i once knew) told me to watch-out for them soul suckers too '...did you believe them when they told you. They discovered you. everything was free as long as you do what they tell you to. think it's true. [but nothing could be further from the truth my love.] did you listen when they told you to change your name. nobody wants honesty when looking at a perfect frame. play the game. [but nothing could be further from the truth my love.] nothings more powerful than beauty in a wicked world.'

Now then, having purged myself of 48 hours of pent-up bile I shall smooth my ruffled feathers down and talk about something else.

bah.

Truth in descriptions

Let me begin by saying I've been a huge fan of Glenn's blog since he moved to Salon.

The Right learned long ago about the power of words, i.e. the death tax instead of the inheritance tax.

Hence, the real description for this is that the Democrats have joined in "legalizing Auschwitz". The Nazi war criminals were all "following orders" of their revered leader. That is what this bill does for the telcoms and anyone else. I'd love to see someone ask Joe Lieberman how he feels about honoring Nazi war criminals by his actions.

I'd like to add some additional terms:

Neo-Stalinests instead of Neo-conservatives. That is the goal of giving all the power to "Papa George" like the USSR gave to "Papa Joe". Of course it is always for the good of the motherland. The two Papas know we have enemies and we need to sacrifice anything to "protect us".

Pravda instead of the mainstream media. That is the attitude they have taken so describe it honestly.

News flash?

Just got an email from TrueMajority (3:04 EDT) saying that Dodd and Feingold have "just released a statement" vowing to fillibuster.

Anybody else?

Nader now has a FISA post ...

... on his weblog:

http://www.votenader.org/blog/2008/06/24/whats-your-breaking-point/

Trying to make sense of the events of the last few days, here is what, I think, has changed: Last week, it might still, on balance, have been reasonable for people with liberal or libertarian impulses to to support Obama or other Democrats in the November election. But now rational calculation won't any longer support the idea that we ought to vote for him, let alone campaign for him or give him money. The "lesser evil" argument is no longer viable. It will become clearer and clearer that those who continue to make it must -- rightly -- be regarded as dreamers carried away by wishful thinking rather than political realists. No doubt, some people still cling to the illusion that making a cool utilitarian calculation gives us reasons to support Obama. But that is no longer so -- a careful consequentialist assessment of the situation rather yields the conclusion that we must try to defeat Obama just as we must try to defeat McCain. No doubt it will take some time for these insights to sink in, but as they do support for Obama will crumble away and most likely cost him the election in November. It won't be possible to sustain the illusion that liberals have an interest in supporting Obama over McCain when there is no longer any actual rational basis for doing so.

Innocent behavior

Innocent behavior, that is, no advance war and civil strife?

If you can find it, GC!, I'll join you in applauding it. The truth is, in everyone's end is their beginning; we're made the way we're made. Those who admonish may have right on their side, but their admonishments are rarely unalloyed; if you look carefully, some thought for the admonisher's own advantage is always part of the mix.

Put another way, even wisdom isn't innocence, although it's just as welcome. As yours is -- now and always....

you came up glen

Teach joan walsh a thin gor two about how to generate positive attention for our issues. not praise from rush limbaugh. nto praise for gop talking points so they can say "see even liberals agree with us". This is how a real journalist does it. Stands on principle. Takes a stand. And becomes a vocie on a topic. Great job glee. Keep up the fight. You are the man

"How Hoyer got the deal done

By JOHN BRESNAHAN & PATRICK O'CONNOR | 6/24/08 4:45 AM EST Text Size:

House Majority Leader Steny H. Hoyer shepherded a set of FISA amendments through the House last week.

In a tense moment during negotiations over the Foreign Surveillance Intelligence Act, Sen. Kit Bond — the ranking Republican on the Senate Intelligence Committee — said that his side of the aisle could never accept one of the proposals the Democrats were pushing.

According to Democratic insiders, House Majority Leader Steny H. Hoyer abruptly stopped the meeting and said that, if a deal was made, no one would get more grief than he would.

Hoyer was right about that.

The Maryland Democrat shepherded a set of FISA amendments through the House last week — winning praise from House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) and even some in his party to who opposed the deal — but now finds himself subjected to a barrage of criticism from his party’s left.

Sen. Russ Feingold (D-Wis.) called the House bill a “capitulation.” Salon.com’s Glenn Greenwald called Hoyer an “evil, craven enabler of the Bush administration.” Firedoglake.com blogger Jane Hamsher — delivering the lowest possible blow from the liberal blogosphere — declared Hoyer “the new Joe Lieberman.”
