Obama's support for the FISA "compromise"

There are many important lessons from yesterday's announcement that he now supports a warrantless eavesdropping and telecom amnesty bill

War with Iran

I had mentioned that perhaps the Democrats know there is going to be a war with Iran and their FISA betrayal will be forgotten.

Well there is the House Resolution 362, Senate Resolution 580 due to be voted on next week. I learned from dailykos story (click on sig). The House resolution has 169 co-sponsors, the Senate resolution 26.

The House resolution asks that the President

initiate an international effort to immediately and dramatically increase the economic, political, and diplomatic pressure on Iran to verifiably suspend its nuclear enrichment activities by, inter alia, prohibiting the export to Iran of all refined petroleum products; imposing stringent inspection requirements on all persons, vehicles, ships, planes, trains, and cargo entering or departing Iran; and prohibiting the international movement of all Iranian officials not involved in negotiating the suspension of Iran's nuclear program;

I think the commentary correctly says that this is an act of war.

Our Congress is going to aid, if not actually push, Bush into a war with Iran. Next week.

Hey, here's a bet...

George Bush has, apparently, given Congress a July 4th deadline to remove restrictions on offshore oil drilling. Here's a bet: the offshore oil drilling restrictions will NOT be removed by July 4th... they will be removed by early September.

Anyone care to contradict me?

Sincerely,

Michael English

This discussion reminds me of one I had quite a while back

Trying to reason with people who have taken an all or nothing stand, ”I get my way or I quit,” is about as futile as one I had with two teenage girls in Montgomery AL in 1968. They claimed that Montgomery was the greatest city in the world. I asked them what cities they had visited and it turned out that they had never been more than 50 miles from Montgomery. I made the stupid decision that I could prove through logic that they were not in a position to make such a claim. Two wasted hours later, I stopped talking to them.

I have the feeling in the conversations I have tried to have in the last two days with the doomsayers who believe all is lost and the history of what happened in Florida in 2000 is of no consequence, that it is not possible at this time to try and use reason and logic. Last December when the Dems called the bluff of the House Repugs, Glenn told us that this victory would probably be short lived and that in time the Dems would cave to the Repugs. I don’t know what would happen if Obama had decided to take a stand regardless of the consequences. Just because Obama did cave this time is not proof that he will cave throughout the remainder of the campaign, And just because he takes a stand, is not a guarantee that the congress would go along with him. How does he look as a leader then? It is clearly a warning sign that Obama may not take on the Repugs strongly enough and lose like Gore and Kerry did.

I fail to understand how this Dem caving would come as such a surprise. I can only conclude that many of the doomsayers are naïve about political realities. We need everyone to work together now more than ever. So please get your emotions in check and help Glenn to continue to lead us in a very important fight.

As I said several times before, if you live in a state like Illinois where your vote for Obama will not make any difference, then send whatever message you want. If you live in a critical state like Florida and Ohio where your vote could really count, don’t let your emotions cause a president McSame.

There are five million Iraqi refugees because of an unnecessary, stupid war. There was a story today that the Bush administration is finally nearing the halfway point of admitting a miniscule 12,000 Iraqi immigrants. How could anyone want to continue with another president who will disrespect the same Iraqi people who supported our war and then had to escape their homeland and struggle to survive. See my sig for this AP story and ask yourself why you would take any chance of electing a president who plans to start another war with Iran and refuses to talk to the “enemy” unless that “enemy” agrees to everything that he wants. Your vote or refusal to vote for Obama could have catastrophic consequences as it did in 2000 and 2004.

time article

Nancy was just doing what she could. She can only work with the memes that the Republicans set out.

Now Obama can move to the center from the DFH, wacko left. Can't move too far from the right because that's worked so well.

I realize that the media is largely to blame, but why always happily play with the opponent's loaded dice?

And then, depression set in.

Cognitive dissonance in action

We see it in people like Andrew Sullivan who was so fired up against the FISA atrocity only to "come around" when his guy, Obama, decided he was for it. We see it in the many Obama worshipers who invested so much into his cult of personality only to see him betray both what he himself said he was about and what they thought he was about.

These people held beliefs that they were good people and that Obama was a (superhuman) good person(tm) that was core to their ego structure. Along comes big, glaring evidence that Obama is absolutely not a (superhuman) good person(tm) with intentions to bring "change". Of course, "change" as presented by Obama was so huge, amorphous, undefined, and all-encompassing, that all these erstwhile good people saw in that magic word what they wanted to see in it.

Now there is clear evidence that there is no real change coming, at least not what they expected and fantasized about. Now there is clear evidence that Obama, far from being superhuman, is just another corrupt, lying, sniveling politician that would sell his soul, their souls, and the souls of their mothers in order to obtain power.

How to deal with that? Why, with massive rationalizations of course. All that invested in Obama and his worship, it is virtually impossible to clear that away. Rationalizations come forth on how Obama really IS good(tm) and loves us. He really doesn't like dictator powers but will grudgingly take them upon his narrow, muscle-less, bony shoulders and only wield them kindly and with our best interests at heart. Orrrrr, it is a trick! That's it! A trick! Obama had to go along in order to get the nomination and to get through the election. Once he is dictator, err, President, he will quickly eliminate these dictatorial powers in concert with his tricky Democrap compatriots. See? It is all a ruse, that's all. They don't mean it, there are just political forces (there MUST be!) that we little people can't see that need to be navigated before they can make things right again!

A LOT of people are sorting out their cognitive dissonance the wrong way and rather than accepting that gutting the Bill of Rights is anathema and inexcusable, they are rationalizing it into being a good thing(tm).

Big Brother is watching...but it is out of love. He only want to protect you!
