Obama's support for the FISA "compromise"

There are many important lessons from yesterday's announcement that he now supports a warrantless eavesdropping and telecom amnesty bill

The letters thread is now closed.

Change in "politics as usual"

There's a Democratic majority.

So, there's no worry.

Agree with the bill...let it pass.

More people will vote 'Obama' (get the Democrat elected).

Then, they'll bring it up again.

The Democratic majority will make the necessary changes;

then go after the Bush administration later?

When the shoe fits

I just came here to say: Glenn, keep hammering away, on whomever needs to be hammered.

Saturday, June 21, 2008 06:06 PM

@ hey, c'mon!

My apologies, Hume's Ghost-- though in all fairness, the formatting of the Update is a bit unclear; I assumed that the bit in italics including the John Adams quote was you, and that Glenn added the Jefferson quote.

I'll stop payment on Glenn's check at once. ;)

The silver lining in all this

You know, terrorists hate us because of our freedoms, and as we slowly and convincingly give away our freedoms, maybe we won't be hated as much. Eventually we won't be targeted by the terrorists, and we won't have to live in fear. Terrorists will shift to hatred onto Canada, and, really, is that what we all want? Everyone wins. The end.

@ -- LilyRose

Worse yet, it's not unforseeable that at the rate we're accelerating down this slippery slope into the totalitarian gulch, we may ultimately come to envy the terrorists for their freedoms!

And how f***ed up is that?

Saturday, June 21, 2008 06:30 PM

@ retired military partriot

Politicians understand only two things: the carrot and the stick.

Reid, Hoyer, Pelosi, Dean and Obama ate all the carrots. Now it is time for the stick.

Even scarier than Obama caving in is

the inability of so many of his supporters to call him on it.

There doesn't seem to be much difference between Obama supporters and Bush supporters. Is there?

Ciccina@5:11

The virtual political flash mob is going to run smack into McCain–Feingold sooner or later. Just the name itself shows what a clusterfuck we are in.

I think it speaks to the creeping disenfranchisement of average citizens

I agree. In the internet age, I think the BCRA will hinder citizens much more than large corporations.

There is an old saying that might relate to the BCRA:

If someone insists that power comes from money instead of money coming from power, we can draw one of two conclusions.

1) They have neither.

2) They want yours.

Just A Moment!

Haven't read the whole thread and am late to the party, being a pomposity and all, but there are reports that Pennsylvania Republican Senator Arlen Specter is opposed to the FISA bill as it may land in the upper house next week.

I agree with Stevedew

Bad call: Highlighting sysprog's snide analogies in your post wasn't the best way to make your points.

[...]

I was prepared to accept all of those shortcomings and tender my vote for him until yesterday. How is it not "utterly corrupt," to quote from sysprog's '14 year-old' analogy, for a scholar like Obama to trade a bedrock principle of American Constitutional law for what he thinks will be a political advantage in the general election?

stevedew, Saturday, June 21, 2008 03:27 PM

But we need even younger kids. If only this FISA Business had some pictures of screaming fetuses being terminated, we could turn this thing around! I've delivered thousands of babies, by the way.

Refuse This Battle And You've Already Lost Most Of The Next War

Friday was a crushing day for this country.

Some human sheep herded themselves backwards into fiefdom.

Now there are only 100 people left with any chance to avert the worst assault on freedom we have ever faced here.

With all admiration and respect, political calculation, tea leaves, heartfelt prayer and a worst case low down blues, i say for sure it is best to fight now.

It's a mindset battle. Just like so many others. Our candidate is our candiate because he will fight such battles.

He must have the faith in us that we have in him.

There are allies in the Senate.

Make a stand.

We don't care if it lasts through January.

Not to fight will enable a guaranteed permanent disfigurement of indispensable American innovations in law, government, reason, liberty, imagination, and free people breathing unfettered among the scheming demons of insane murderous greed and undiversified fascist failure.

The whole best purpose of Obama's campaign was to win this kind of fight.

So fight it now, just like it would have been fought in January.

To be an American President presents opportunity and challenge.

To be President of an America whose proud past and very reason for being has been erased by sects of cowards, Nazis, racists, bigots, grifters, traitors, and dolts 7 months before you take office is unbearable.

If it can't be postponed/tabled/properly rewritten or amended, use the filibuster to reach, teach and beseech the American attention til all who would know can see what treasures of our rare bold history must be protected from unabidable harm.

Set up feeds to every possible broadcast outlet and give us all a living history lesson.

What better way could be found to stop tyranny, arrest criminality, preserve liberty, uphold and defend the Constitution, educate the citizenry, and win an election?

We are with you. Don't underestimate us. Believe in your highest self. And act accordingly.

This is supposed to be the land of the free, and the home of the brave.

Prove it.
