What Nancy Pelosi, Steny Hoyer and Fred Hiatt mean by "bipartisanship"

Even the GOP, the media establishment and many Democrats themselves are openly mocking the claims by Pelosi and Hoyer that they "negotiated" a "bipartisan compromise."

The letters thread is now closed.

hmmmm

teachertun,

I didn't see anything in there about FISA. Are you suggesting a revolution? Becareful what you wish for.

So everyone in here is up in arms about FISA because you believe it violates your civil liberties. Are you people really that paranoid to believe the government has nothing better to do than to listen to your boring conversations? Seriously, if you don't have anything to hide then you don't have anything to worry about do you? Unless you're directly supporting terrorist activities in this country, what do you have to fear? Oh, I know, it is the principle of the matter. If only you people would get this upset about the wasteful spending of our tax dollars by the government or even half as angry about the prospect of higher tax rates.

I don't consider myself Republican or Democrat, but I'm all for FISA if it means preventing another 9/11 from happening. Go ahead FBI, CIA, NSA, listen to all my phone calls, read and sort my mail for me, filter out my spam emails and while you're at it, do my laundry. Really folks, the government doesn't have the manpower to listen in on your phone calls, so chances are pretty good they're not wasting their time with you. When our own liberties grant our enemies the opportunity to live amongst us to plan and carry out an attack like 9/11, sometimes you need to re-evaluate things. I would hope we all learned that lesson from 9/11. Clearly, Congress has and took the necessary precautions to ensure our security.

Incremental March Towards Fascism

About a month back, Glenn wrote about the horribly misguided belief that "It doesn't happen here".

Not only CAN it happen here...it IS happening here. RIGHT NOW.

Why would the Dems take impeachment off the table? Why not ask them? A bunch of Massachusetts residents confronted their elected representative John Olver with this question.

When Olver was asked about impeachment resolutions that had overwhelmingly passed in his congressional district, he told his constituents that if the Dems tried to impeach Bush and Cheney that..."the current autocratic executive...would attack Iran from the air, declare a national emergency, institute martial law and call off the 2008 election, were the Democrats to initiate impeachment."

This is a 3:26 clip of Ralph Nader discussing this alarming meeting between Olver and his constituents. Watch it.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rIO-tCPSfHA

The Dems in congress are not impeaching Bush and Cheney because they are scared shitless. They know what these criminals are willing to do.

Glenn, what do you have to say about Kucinich's articles of impeachment? Kucinich is the one Democrat upholding his duty right now. We should support him wholeheartedly.

It's not too late for this country, but the criminals in this Administration must be STOPPED.

@YellowDog

Machiavelian, I think. Or Machiavel.

That's nice to hope for, assuming he'd advance your interests. With this example, why assume he will?

Clinton? really?

Welcome to the Unity Pony...

this is the "unity" that the fauxgressive blogosphere was praising in their blind support for Barack Obama.

Instead of an actual leader like Hillary Clinton, you all went with someone who clearly made promises to the pelosis and rockefellers that he wouldn't interfere with what they felt like doing. -- paul_lukasiak(?)

I ask this in all sincereity: Are you nuts?

You cannot possibly be trying to argue that the establishment queen of moderate/centrist, free-trade corporatism would have been a better choice... you are not trying to make that argument are you? Cause if that is the case you are seriously delusional.

bucks4mccain and Bush 43

Please provide the list of names of these historians you mentioned. I would love to see their political affiliations.

The post you responded to argued that Bush 43 was one of the worst presidents in history.

I'm curious--do you disagree with the idea that Bush 43 is one of the worst presidents we've had? If so, please tell me what you think he has done that has been so great? Many people here could give you a long list of reasons for why the "worst president" moniker sticks, so what is it about Bush 43 that compels you to disagree? What makes him a good president?

Glenn's blog attracts so many Pauls

"When the government tells you to do something I think we all realize that's something you should, uh, do."

Yes, well, it uh, all depend on which party is in control, doesn't it? And whether there is an R or a D after the name of the Preznit.

Thanks.

Don't be coy, Kitt....

Rahm opens his mouth and more dog stars drop out.

Those aren't "stars", they're turds. Emannuel has inverted his digestive tract. It's a common affliction in Congress these days.

Called Pelosi...

It took several tries, because the line was busy. When I got through the operator quickly dumped me into voicemail. Maybe some flunky will listen to it in a few days, long after amnesty is a fait accompli.

All I can do is redirect any contributions which I would have given to a Democratic candidate to ActBlue instead. I'm simply furious.

Real Democrats

A few more Real Democratic groups:

Perhaps the most outspoken Democratic organization opposing the FISA bill is Democrats.com. This group is unafilliated with the Democratic Party but supports the principles of the DNC and Howard Dean. In the last few weeks they have opposed the FISA bill and the bill to continue funding for the Iraq war, and supported the bills calling for the impeachment of Bush and Cheney. If you agree with most of the posters on this site, they're very much worth a look.

http://www.democrats.com/

Howard and Jim Dean's Democracy For America is http://democracyforamerica.com/

and, among other things, provides professional quality training in political organizing for state and congressional races.

The ACLU, leading the fight against the FISA bill, is http://www.aclu.org/

Russ Feingold's Progressive Patriots Fund, which supports progressive candidates, often running against the so-called Democrats who've enabled this tragedy, is at

http://www.progressivepatriotsfund.com/

TrueMajority, founded by Ben Cohen of Ben and Jerry's, is a conceptually revolutionary organization aimed at redirecting American policy toward peace through substantial reforms in the federal budget. Two of their offshoot groups are Americans for Sensible Priorities and Businesspeople For Sensible Priorities. They're at http://www.truemajority.org/

These are just a few well-organzied and grassroots-financed groups who have made a difference already and aren't giving up.

Senator Patrick Leahy of Vermont came out forcefully today against the FISA bill. He joins Feingold, Chris Dodd and Tom Harkin of Iowa as the real Democratic leaders. And don't forget Al Gore and John Edwards, who, while no longer in Congress, still have great influence and can be expected to be active in the future.

It's not over. You always hit greater opposition when you're making progress.
