What Nancy Pelosi, Steny Hoyer and Fred Hiatt mean by "bipartisanship"

Even the GOP, the media establishment and many Democrats themselves are openly mocking the claims by Pelosi and Hoyer that they "negotiated" a "bipartisan compromise."

The letters thread is now closed.

Thanks for the FISA factcheck info. I bet that's an article our little troll hadn't read yet.

-- cgower @ Pelosi - That'll show him!

It's actually just in the last couple days that I've come to view Nancy Pelosi as simply not being very bright. It reminds me of the aftermath of the Scooter Libby trial when many right-wing pundits were trotted out on the cable shows to give their responses to the "injustice" of the verdict. Some of them were just shilling, but many of them were earnest and their arguments revealed them to be just plain stupid (Kate O'Beirne comes instantly to mind). This is the exact same impression I've had of Pelosi and her comments over this bill and I find it a little surprising, although I'm not sure if I'm surprised to find that she sounds so stupid or surprised that I've never noticed before.

Apart from giving money to primary challengers ...

... those who are otherwise sympathetic should consider starting to give their money to the Nader campaign.

I work way too hard for the money I earn to throw it away on some old white guy's narcissistic campaign to be relevant. So no thanks.

Follow the Money

When people in Congress vote against principles for which they formerly voiced support, one can impute corrupt motives. Hoyer, Pelosi and other senior Democrats understand where the streams of money flow and the telecom stream splashes widely.

What Brand of Justice is on Sale Today?

To all in congress who voted for this horrendous bill: your vote is a bitter betrayal of all the potential glory of the united states of America and establishes a legacy of injustice for all who don't have the money to buy their own private brand of justice -- justice has become merely a commodity of this congress, sold to the highest payer. For the "soiled masses" there is only a "let them eat cake," or maybe, "let them eat shit" mentality.

The cynical, blind and cruel behavior of our federal legislature is a poison in the body politic. That body now sits in a dark box in chains, waiting for truth and freedom. It quietly loses its mind, its limbs, on the deserts of Iraq and Afghanistan. It struggles to pay for health care, food, and fuel, under the yoke of deregulated exploitation, while breathing, drinking and eating the poisons of a negligent, self-serving industry. Bush talks about tyrants -- he is looking in the mirror. And behind him stand the hosts of suited bobble-heads who have the gall to stand as representatives in the halls of public service.

Daaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaamn

that's a harsh advertisement. I like it.

that's what I'm talking about. time for cover-up, and watching yrou own's back, is over.

Remember when protestors where in front of pelosi's house for months? "I don't know why their doing this or what it will accomplish".

Maybe they understand now. Do what you say or NOW their will be conseqeunces. irrelevance. The loss of your chance to be a "representative" of the american people. They onyl represent us, IF THEY REPRESENT US. :). If they're not our representatives what are they. We fought teh british for a representative goverment./ Time to restore that concept once and for all

BTW, Glenn, love the new ad!

adnoto and tempus ...

.. good to see some people who understand what the rational response to this has to be.

Friday, June 20, 2008 12:39 PM

So what did you expect?

But it's downright pathetic to see them try to depict their behavior as some sort of bipartisan "compromise" whereby they won meaningful concessions

You didn't really think they were going to be honest enough to actually tell the truth, did you?

"Fuck you, chumps! We've got ours - to hell with the rest of you."

@adnoto

I've raised children, adnoto. Quite a few, my own and other peoples. You are the only one whining here. You don't know it because it is an unconscious ingrained response at this stage in your life but there is no difference between you and a child in the supermarket bawling because she can't have that piece of candy... NOW!

To whine...

To utter a plaintive, high-pitched, protracted sound, as in pain, fear, supplication, or complaint.

To complain or protest in a childish fashion.

To produce a sustained noise of relatively high pitch: jet engines whining.

Keep whining. I know the lyrics by heart now and even though it has no beat I can still dance to it.

Thank you, Glenn, for efforts, and for those ADs

F*ck!ng Hoyer.

F*ck!ng Pelosi.

F*ck!ng Democrats.

F*ck!ng OBAMA!

Don't quit now!

I don't know how long I can stay in a party, or vote for it, or donate to it, with gutless idiots like Pelosi in charge--have you listened to her lately? She seems as addled as Bush himself.

Its enough to make you dispair for the future of our country.

-- Bushfatigue

Come on now...you can't be serious. Rein the sniveling in already. More and better democrats is the plan of the future. It has never been tried before. And anyway, Pelosi and Hoyer et al. aren't so bad. We can make them change with the TV ads and stuff. Its a slow incremental process that can only be won if we take one step forward and two steps back.

Power corrupts

Resubmitting an AP wire from a couple hours ago: "The Senate is expected to pass the bill with a large majority, perhaps as soon as next week, before Congress takes a break during the week of the Fourth of July." (Last week Pelosi was "predicting" passage "before the Fourth of July break." So, I think it's safe to assume, folks, that the fix was in and this was a done deal a long time ago).

Most politicians crave power and will do whatever is necessary to keep it once they get it. And three ways to ensure power and control? Keep people: uneducated, afraid and demoralized. Yeah, this entire dirty FISA episode is demoralizing and may be a fait accompli, but let's hang tough and spend the next few days going after Senators...let's make sure they at least sweat a little while they're using the Constitution as kindling for they're freakin' 4th of July BBQs.
