What Nancy Pelosi, Steny Hoyer and Fred Hiatt mean by "bipartisanship"

Even the GOP, the media establishment and many Democrats themselves are openly mocking the claims by Pelosi and Hoyer that they "negotiated" a "bipartisan compromise."

The letters thread is now closed.

Constitution Shredded?

More like, "Left-wing groups are charging Congress with endangering a 200-year-old document. The document is not well known except to scholars, but is considered to be of incalculable value. But Congressional leaders dismissed those claims, saying the document is still locked in its glass box under heavy security.

"The real threat to that old thing is terrorism," says Republican Kit Bond.

In other news ..."

etc.

McCain Recruiting........TROLLS!!!!!!
By ronburgandy - May 20, 2008, 11:03PM
Cafe Talk | Talking Points Memo
John McCain is actively recruiting trolls to spew his talking points on blogs.
This page on his website asks for supporters to go to various blogs and "go there, and make your opinions supporting John McCain known." It then asks those that make comments to "report the details of your comment by clicking the button below. After your comments are verified, you will be awarded points through the McCain Online Action Center."
The page gives links to blogs such as dailykos, and also gives helpful "talking points" for users to push.

Sorry. Done with you.

Actually, they don't check out. A liberal source is not a credible source and neither is a conservative one. Keep looking.

You have pretty much defined all sources as not credible in your statement above. Ergo, you just believe what you want, irrespective of the truth that may be out there.

You probably can't even name a source you would consider 'credible'. Can't stop people from wanting to ignore reality, but it must be really difficult to get around with your head stuffed so deeply in the ground.

Practically everybody's more mobilized than Americans

While the Strange Bedfellows efforts are laudable -- as are MoveOn's and the ACLU and EFF and many, many, many, many, many others -- we still face the consolidation of the Autocracy, with the full and active complicity of a startling majority of the House and Senate (I know, the Senate hasn't voted on this one, but we all know it will be 75/25 the way these things "traditionally" go), and there seems to be nothing we can do to stop or even significantly modify the rush to transform our national government into something more suited to Empires of Old.

The temporary halt to the FISA "reform" measure was over prerogatives not over principles. The Senate tried to jam something through the House at an inappropriate moment. The House rebelled over the arrogance and contempt of its means and methods. Just as the Senate has rebelled in the past when the White House or House of Representatives tried to force the Senate to act in haste or without due regard to Senatorial custom.

It's got nothing to do with principles; it never did.

But our electeds see their customs, traditions and prerogatives as if they were the Constitution they swore an oath to. The government itself, and more specifically one another and one another's cronies, are to be protected and defended. The Democrats have been doing that since they took over Congress because they sincerely believe in it. It's as non-partisan "progressive" as you can get. Whoever has the role of The Government is to be protected and defended exactly as if they were the Constitution itself.

Republicans don't believe in that -- unless one of their own is on the Peacock Throne and the Government is synonymous with Republican power. Then, of course, yes.

A Dem in the White House or controlling the legislature? Absolutely not. That's the same as treason.

People all over the world have little problem making their displeasure with their governments known, even in some of the most repressive societies. Here? Not so much, not any more.

The brilliance of the current crop of Authoritarians in government and the media was to simply ignore protest, and when protest could not be ignored, to mock it. And to do whatever they wanted anyway and call it Stalwart™ and Strong™ and Principled™. They even mocked Cindy Sheehan. Guess what? It worked like a charm.

There are still plenty of protests, make no mistake, and plenty more direct actions, but if they come from the Left, they have no effect -- except to inspire full throated denunciations. From the Right, sure, much genuflection and obeisance. Eager consideration of grievance.

But because they are catered to on nearly everything, the Right doesn't have to get up in arms more than occasionally, even with the Devil Democrats in power.

Now why do you suppose there is so much kow-towing to rightist imperialist warmongering authoritarians and so much laughter and contempt toward the rest of us, the vast majority of us?

Why might that be?

Hm. Must be one of those Cosmic Mysteries.

what now?

Guess I'll see if there's any civilized country out there that will take another refugee from Nazi Amerika.

Congress is a sham. They proved their irrelevance today and yesterday beyond a doubt.

Pelosi, Reid & Hoyer are traitors and ought to be tried for collusion with war criminals.

The great American experiment has come to an end, folks.

@ L.W.M.

Being in a flirtacious mood and all, were you just dropping a hankie for me, too, or were you looking for something a little more pugnacious? (One would think you had you hands full today without looking downstairs for tsuris :-)

Pedinska

the only REAL news is ARMY news. Right, Bucky2?

Bystander, I missed that the first time around. thanks! It explains the new faces we've seen here---Bucky2 is only a couple of weeks old, and he's definitely no reincarnation.

Called Hoyer's Office

Took me almost an hour to get through and the mailbox was full, but finally got a young woman:

Hoyer's Office: "Congressman Hoyer's Office!"

Me: "Hi, I just called to congratulate Congressman Hoyer on the great job he did today on FISA. Really well done."

Hoyer's Office: "Oh! Well, thank you!"

Me: "Yes, I didn't realize a Democrat could capitulate so completely to President Bush. And Dick Cheney sends his regards and thanks, too. Great job screwing the American people!"

Hoyer's Office: "Oh. Ummm. I'll pass along your comments." Click.

It was childish, but I enjoyed it.

Whatever it takes, Glenn, I'm on board.
