George Bush's latest powers, courtesy of the Democratic Congress

Congress is going to decree that the president has the power to order private citizens to break the law, as well as to spy on our telephone calls and e-mails with no warrants.

The letters thread is now closed.

Disgusted

Whats the point of working for these jerks to get a majority? They're all the same. A pox on both your houses. And what exactly did you compromise besides your principles? Democratic party, please kiss my ass.

Just Got Form Letter email from Obama

I just got a form letter email from Obama's campaign from my earlier call to their office.

Thank you for contacting Obama for America about the proposed legislation to

give phone companies legal immunity for past wiretapping. Senator Obama holds

strong opposition to this special interest provision is frustrated that the

President and his supporters in Congress continue to push it. This fight is just

one more example of why things in Washington must change.

Senator Obama has consistently opposed this Administration's efforts to use

debates about our national security to expand its own power, whether that was in

regard to the conduct of the Iraq war or its restrictions on our civil liberties

through domestic surveillance programs or suspension of habeas corpus. It is

time to restore oversight and accountability in the FISA program, and rejecting

this unprecedented grant of retroactive immunity is a good place to start.

Giving retroactive immunity to telecom companies is simply wrong. Thankfully,

the most recent effort to pass this legislation at the end of the legislative

year failed. Senator Obama unequivocally opposes granting immunity. Senator

Obama cosponsored Senator Dodd's proposal in order to remove it from the current

FISA bill.

This Administration has put forward a false choice between the liberties we

cherish and the security we demand. When Senator Obama is president, there will

be no more illegal wire-tapping of American citizens; no more national security

letters to spy on citizens who are not suspected of a crime; no more tracking

citizens who do nothing more than protest a misguided war. Our Constitution

works, and so does the FISA court. By working with Congress and respecting our

courts, Senator Obama will provide our intelligence and law enforcement agencies

with the tools they need to track and take out the terrorists without

undermining our Constitution and our freedom.

Thank you again for contacting Obama for America. .

Sincerely,

Barack Obama

@Tempus

Well Tempus, you say you won't vote for Obama, and you'll vote 3rd party libertarian, green, etc. Well that's pretty much the same as voting for McCain. If you don't vote for Obama, you are voting for McCain regardless if you do it directly or indirectly. Like those dumb asses in 2000 that voted for Nader and cost Gore the election, saying there was no difference between Bush and Gore. How'd that work out for our country stupid? You are just making the same damn mistake. No 3rd party candidate has a chance of getting elected. That's just a fact, so deal with it. So if you vote 3rd party, you are just throwing away your vote. Will Obama do everything you want him to? No most likely not, but he'll damn sure going to represent you better then McCain will. So grow up and develop some damn maturity.

trying to fax Hoyer's office

FYI, I've been trying to fax Hoyer's Washington office all day.

Constant busy signal.

Either he's getting swamped, or more likely, they turned the thing off

Maybe Mentioned Before

But Steny Hoyer criticized Stephen Colbert after his performance at the White House Correspondents' Dinner, saying he "crossed the line" and "he is the President of the United States and he deserves some respect." So clueless. Ironic, too, as Hoyer clearly does not respect the people of the United States nor the Constitution, which created the only thing about him worth respecting: his office.

where is Nancy?

Where is Nancy Pelosi?

Has she been out front as any "leader" should be on a matter of this scope, reach and consequence?

So how much does Nancy get paid every week to be in Congress doing "leadership"?

Barack Obama is not President yet but Nancy is House Speaker and she is flunking this test.

Try as one might to grade on a curve Nancy is flunking.

The GOPers demonstrated levels of legislative malfeasance and craven conduct that one was resigned to accept as normal GOPer behavior.

However with the "D" brand now showing up to do "Money Party" business and screw over the "People Party" where do they see the upshot for doing so?

Nancy has some explaining to do and she is not doing it.

Where is Nancy? Forget Steny. Where is Nancy?

Russia and China

This all sounds ominously like America has become Russia and China and the Bushian Republican party.

Now they can spy on anybody they want to, at anytime they so choose.

And the Dems helped them to do it.

I just hope our safety is worth the loss of our now gone liberties. I wonder how the Rethug party will now stretch and use this in the future. I also wonder how the Dems will use it to their advantage. And how quickly the Rethugs will attack the Dems for using this law.

I see no real limitations on either party using this law to their own political advantage, and against their political rivals.

Repubs you wanted this law, so don't scream when the Dems use it to persecute or criminalize you right wingers.

Can we now say that this is the legacy that the likes of Tim Russert left behind.

If the Dems get the WH and a super majority in the Congress we will see what they are going to do for America, the 241 million of us who do not vote Rethug.

If the Dems do not produce, I will be voting for the Libertarian Party in four years, for the first time in my life since I began voting in the mid sixties. Or, maybe I'll vote for Nader and the Greenies.

Being a Boy Scout, I have always been a strong believer in the conservation of nature. Ooops, their is that despicable word again, conservation/ conservative. Well, I guess some uses are good and their(conservatives) uses are of a foul and evil stench.

No problem calling Hoyer's office

I just called a few minutes ago to express my outrage and a polite young man picked right up.
