George Bush's latest powers, courtesy of the Democratic Congress

Congress is going to decree that the president has the power to order private citizens to break the law, as well as to spy on our telephone calls and e-mails with no warrants.

The letters thread is now closed.

@kilroy

Obama was never my choice, and now I'm reduced to voting for him for one thing only, the supreme court. Letting McCain get the next few picks would be even more disastrous that what we've got now. Remember how close we came to losing habeas corpus? Consider it gone if McCain wins. So, yes, I'm voting for someone it seems ever more likely I'll have to hold my nose for.

F'g democrats, they really should be ashamed to hold any office these days.

<<What A Shame

lomecdutex: Why will you vote for someone who voted present 130 time's as a state Rep in Illinois? what can you expect of a loser with a record like that?We just don't have anyone running who is qualified to be president. Obama is just a big mouth with no substance and Old Man McCain is George Bush the 3rd. What a sorry state this once great country is in when the young people who have a maxed out credit card drive a car that isn't paid for and if they have a house they owe more than it's worth which shows not only bad judgment but bad management vote for an empty suit and get him nominated it doesn't get much worse than that but it will because one of these losers will be the next president. What a shame>>

@adnoto

Yeah.. your "blessing" is what matters.

What an ass.

-- adnoto

Your condemnation is all that matters.

;-)

You did vote for Bush in 2000. No wonder you don't think voting solves anything.

If voting solved anything it would be illegal.

anonymous

That's the problem with you, adnoto. I think you'd make it illegal. And you laughed when I said you were an authoritarian.

Or your friends did. Who knows what your friends know? Aside from you that is, and that's not much. Still waiting for your solutions...

Olbermann?? MSNBC??

Has anyone contacted Olbermann, or perhaps Dan Abrahms @ MSNBC? (I know Dan's a jerk, but his dad, Floyd Abrahms, is a big First Amendment guy).

Perhaps also Jonathan Turley, who appears regularly on KO. While Jonathan Alter always shoots down Turley's excellent ideas, this whole mess -- Steney Hoyer in particular -- is just RIPE for a Worst Person in the World designation. Turley have the connections and be able to convince Olbermann to do something on this NOW.

oh, one other thing...

...if this reading is correct (a nixonian "if the president does it -- or says it's ok -- it's legal") what exactly differentiates a president from a monarch?

Throw Out The Incumbents!

Dear Glenn,

It's now obvious that the Democratic Leadership is so strategically short-sighted that they now own all of the problems the Republicans have created. It is so stupid of them, when they could have opposed all of these policies as patriots but instead cowered as weasels.

They are obviously corrupt and in the pay of the telecoms and the other large corporations preying on ordinary Americans while the Senators get "special" rates and considerations on their mortgages ...

It's time to get rid of every member of this failed democrat leadership in addition to every single one of the Yellow-bellied blue Dogs ...

In 2006, there were all kinds of vets that wanted to run, but they were forced out by Rahm Emmanuel in favor of millionaires who are Republicans in all but name. All the Dems want are people wealthy enough to pay for their own elections and corrupt enough to be bought off. It looks like they got their wish.

The only answer is to boot all of the leadership and the yellow-bellied blue dogs out of office and run progressives in their place - real Democrats.

It's time to throw the other bastards out!

LWM

Your absolutely right. At some point there must be a return to reason, even in our emotionality.

It amazes me that rational, informed people like post to this thread, would suggest voting for McCain or not voting at all as a form of protest. That these same people could not understand the benefit of active protesting.

For people who say it couldn't be worse, well...you need to get out more. This is egregious, for sure, but it could be far worse. What to do? Well, dropping OUT of the political process and taking *a stand* that is, in effect, unnoticed and useless, is NOT the solution.

You only have a couple of real choices: stay involved in teh system and keep fighting it and organizing and THINKING of effective ways to handle this (which, I would think would be the no-brainer solution for a crowd of this type, with above average intelligence) OR SULK about how f*ked up the country is. If you get sick of sulking you could leave altogether and start you own country (ahem) and carry a copy of our beloved constitution with you. (not a bad idea but...)

Personally I don't think it's gotten to that point quite yet. And personally, I'd consider revolution before leaving to set up shop on some god forsaken no-mans land...

But come on people. Outrage is good. Organization and protest is better. Have we gotten so soft that the only way we protest things is on the freaking internet? Quite with the defeatism. Its useless. Take a breath and figure MORE ways to be effective. Sitting out this election in November or voting in such a way that McCain is elected (who trust me, is worse) is childish sour grapes of the highest order. (I certainly hope not ONE of you who are talking this way had one single thing to say about Hillary's disgruntled women supporters).

Come on. Glenn, great work. And all the best with your ActBlue organization. Its a great step in ACTIVE MEANINGFUL protest. I wish people would get "ahold" of themselves.

Don't just sit there; get hysterical

A bitter defeat for liberals and for the country as a whole, but is it worth it for Obama to crash his candidacy over it?

And if he denounces Hoyer and his cronies for being whores to the telecoms, what will he look like after it passes anyway?

And what cooperation will he get as President from Rockefeller?

This is the real Long War, folks; you don't fire the commander after every defeat. Even Lincoln didn't do that.

I was a Hillary supporter, and I hate the people who crafted this disgraceful 'compromise', but if Obama gets his head cut off on this issue, he's too feeble a politician to become an effective president.

My note to the DNC

In addition to contacting my Representative I sent the following to the DNC:

"Due to the Steny Hoyer capitulation bill regarding FISA / telco immunity, the money I would have donated to the DNC has instead gone to ACT Blue to create advertisements against this atrocity."

Hit them where it hurts; in the pocketbook.

Amen MaddieP

Maddie you got it just right. Tempus and adnoto talk like spoiled little brats, that take their ball home and won't play no more if they don't get their way. Well grow up you babies!!! Voting 3rd party, or not voting at all this election will only do one thing, get McCain elected. If that happens, you two have only yourselves to blame. So the rest of us will do what we can to get Obama elected. I for one am going canvasing this Saturday to help support Obama. You are either part of the problem or part of the solution. Tempus and adnoto have shown what side they are on.
